This car is impossible to find

If any of you have ever watched the office, and remember when they had to make a commercial for Dunder Mifflin and it stars out with a man walking up and down the aisles waving his hand at salesmen trying to catch someone's att still, that's how I feel trying to buy this car. Every single time I find the right one (three times now) it's sold before they could take the ad down or sold the next day after I inquired. I've finally saved up enough, after nearly 2 years of being obsessed with this car. I thought that was going to be the hard part, I never though finding one to buy would be this tough.
I've narrowed what I want down to a limited brz, either white, wrb, or gbs. Aiming for less than 20k but can afford up to 22 if it was worth it. And I'm searching in a 500 mile radius of where I live and still have difficulty finding one!
I have to say, though. Somehow this makes me love the car even more, just one more irritating step that'll make me appreciate it that much more when I finally do buy it.

I test drove a new one a couple weeks back because I had only driven an automatic last year, and I had planned on looking at other cars but that test drive sold me 100%. There might be a better car out there but I honestly don't care to find it.

ryoma 05-15-2016 10:11 PM

take a gander at the cars for sale section on our forums every now and then. GL to you in your search

Tcoat 05-15-2016 10:12 PM

Holy crap!
I read that and thought "how hard can it be to find a used BRZ in Florida?".
Then I checked Autotrader. Two or three used ones in each major city.
That's nuts.

rookie 05-15-2016 10:12 PM

My buying experience is similar and I know exactly what you're going through. A couple times the private seller I found either flaked on me or was slow to respond though I made it clear I was ready to buy. I'm glad things worked out the way they did otherwise I would've settled for a lesser 86 and I wouldn't have been 100% satisfied.

Be patient, it'll be worth it!

tommewin 05-15-2016 10:16 PM

On cars.com you can set alerts so that you get an email if a listing gets created that meets your criteria.

I can understand them being hardtop find for you.

Wisconsin!

I would think you would be tripping over the damn things in Florida.

iggy 05-15-2016 10:41 PM

You're looking for a very desirable combination and they go FAST.

I should know....I just bought one that meets your criteria that had been for sale less than a week.

My advice: be patient and have your financing (if you are financing it) in order so you can jump as soon as you find the right car.

Best of luck in your search!

rookie 05-16-2016 12:11 AM

I did end up driving 7 hours to pick up my used BRZ with under 500 miles so be patient and you'll be happy you did.

Also if there is a Carmax in your area, they do free transports from other Carmax to your local one with no obligation to buy.

Every time I'm looking that crosses my mind "should I just say screw it and get an frs? I wasn't even sure a month ago which I wanted" but the interior was so disappointing to me, coming from someone with a cheap interior as it is. So I've just gotta wait it out

2013GTRNate 05-16-2016 12:36 AM

Not the case in SoCal... Lots of kids get sideways quickly and have no choice but to sell. So they are all over the place out here. You are braver than me though this is the biggest tuner car EVER and is literally purchased in 90% of cases to modify. After seeing how people treat their cars I would always prefer to buy new whenever possible. Best of luck to you though. I hope that you find that special one, because it sure sounds like you have worked hard and will appreciate it.

It doesn't help that dealerships don't have much interest in stocking them since they won't sell as easily as a Camry or a Forester.

You know exactly what you want and you have cash ready to throw down, can't you just ask a dealership to go find one for you?

I'm in college and living on my own making $10 an hour, it would be pretty tough to manage a new car right now. I thought I could but I worked out all the numbers and I can't really take on that high of payments

I wouldn't say 90%, at least not in my area. The one thing I've noticed talking to people about these is the owners are generally over 40. ans while their age alone doesn't mean they didn't modify it, their personalities sure did. I'm no foreigner to buying best to hell cars and paying for it soon after I bought it, and I'm making sure I'm overly cautious with this purchase.

So why are you willing to spend what savings you have on a depreciating asset?

I understand that being young you're also prone to stupid decisions but the wiser members here should be jumping on this post and helping you realise that you should put off the car until you have a better life situation, don't live outside your means.

You're still very young, you gave plenty of time to buy the car once you're better off.

ARTBRZ 05-16-2016 09:44 AM

I'm with @FingerDiddle on this. I'd hold off until you're in a better situation. At that rate your going to get it reposesed if somethings unavoidable occurs (medical, etc). I would advise purchasing if your your payments are < 10% of your income. As much as I love my car, there's always going to be a better one that will come out in the future.

Hot Wheels 05-16-2016 10:41 AM

I feel your pain. I live in Kansas, and had to buy one off Craigslist just outside New York City! With some crappy cell phone pics and video, I gave a deposit and flew up there and paid in cash. It looked clean and not too fussed with, but after driving it back 2000 miles, I saw the previous owner lied about a ton of problems and I've been fixing the car since. Take your time and just stay away from most that look modded. This car is a magnet for idiots learning how to rice their cars.

One way to avoid this, to a certain extent, is with a service called Lemon Squad. For a relatively small fee ($140) they will have an inspector check out the car, send you a ton of photos (I got 142 pictures), take it for a short drive and give you an overall rating on the car.

I did it with a car I was considering out of state and the report turned up a number of issues I wouldn't have known about until I was there in person. Saved me a full day of travel and all the money associated with it.

I'm sure it's not the smartest decision I'll make, and I don't want to get super philosophical about my life views, but I've set up a pretty solid plan in case things get rough. I wouldn't be spending everything I have saved on the down payment, I'd be holding onto a year at minimum of payments that I'd dip into only if something unexpected happened. That's the primary reason I can't afford new, is the payments would be too high to keep that precaution. And I need to get another car because I'm met with countless issues with mine and spend more time working on it than is healthy.
I appreciate the suggestion! And I understand where you're coming from, but I also know when I graduate there's going to be more important things to be looking at rather than a car I don't need, and I also know having a coupe is going to be nearly impossible to rationalize down the line.
It definitely isn't a flawless decision I'm making, but I've been thinking what's the worst that can happen if I go through with it for a while, and it doesn't seem there's much that could really go wrong here if I follow through with everything.

He is right ^^^
Joe has thought this out pretty thoroughly over the last year or so and I am pretty confident that he has a solid plan in place. This is not a case of a student/young guy running out and making an impulse buy without thinking through the consequences and impacts to his life style.

It took me a year of relentless searching to find my used fr-s but it was all definitely worth it. Just download all the car apps(autotrader, cars.com, cargurus) and I would say after a few months if you're still unlucky then branch out to the fr-s and look for the monogram series to start. The scions are much more abundant. Good luck!

CelicaJoe 05-16-2016 09:00 PM

I thought about looking for a monogram, but I can only imagine how tough it would be to find one of those. I'm fairly certain I'll find something over the next few weeks, but it certainly is driving me crazy in the meantime

lionbacker54 05-16-2016 09:19 PM

have you thought about ordering one? that's what we did for our highlander hybrid. just went to the dealer and specified the car we wanted, color, options, etc. offered $1000 over invoice. car came in three months, and we paid. not sure if subaru does this, but i bet they would

Regardless of whether you're purchasing new or used, I'd recommend waiting until your car payment would be less than 20% of your monthly income, and you have a 3rd of the car's value in savings.

Just my advice.

Stang70Fastback 05-17-2016 12:12 AM

I honestly thought this was a thread about how every time I walk back out to a parking lot, I have a momentary freak-out where I think my car was stolen because it's so low it hides behind everything.

darthpnoy1984 05-17-2016 01:50 AM

Don't rush take your time finding the ideal BRZ you want.

Vincenttam 05-17-2016 06:16 AM

I think my difficulties in finding this car made it more worth it at the end when i finally sat in it going home and seeing it in my garage. It took me about four months and about 6 dealer ships later before i found my 2013 ultramarine fr-s with 6 miles on it. It was sitting in some back lot all dusty waiting for someone to buy her. It was annoying, exciting and worth it. I can't wait until the end of this year when my brother goes shopping for his BRZ and than i can do this all over again :)

I've got a little more than half saved and it'll be exactly 20% of my monthly income!

I read these stories and chuckle at how my experience was so much different.
I walked into the dealership just to look at the tC and kill time while my Lancer was being serviced next door. My car was sitting in the showroom with a bunch of stuff that I wanted already done to it. I had forgotten they even existed, had never seen one on the road and did not know a single detail about them. Looked it over and said "I'll take it" and made (what I think) was a great deal. Went home and franticly researched to make sure I actually would take it. Drove it home a few days later.

I saw my Hyperblue online while I was stationed in Cali at a dealership near where my current unit is at. I still had a month left in Cali however, and everyone on the hyperblue registry was like "zomg only this many left get them before they're gone!". So I panicked for a month that it'll be sold and when I finally got to the dealership, dealer said no one had even looked at it for months so he gave me a deal just to get rid of it. Don't really see how people have so many problems finding these things, they're just sitting ducks in Texas

It was the same with me but I was reminded about them when a friend had mentioned something about it. I got mine the next week, I was lucky as my dealer had 8 of them in stock at the time and they were all stored indoors.

The kind kind of mileage you cover. 2 year = 8 years for a normal car.

Good luck finding the one you want just be careful. I know a few that were boosted the crap out of then return to stock & sell as problem emerge... & that's only in my area.

If it's me I would stick to used Frs more? Cuz I know usually those boosted one were traded towards something of higher performance. Like STI, focus ST, some Benz/BMW.
