Manualy Immobilize Toyota 86/BRZ?

Hi there,

So I lost my licence a couple of weeks ago.
Although my baby locked away in secure parking, I would still like to go to a few extra measures to make sure no one can flog it..
Back when I had a honda I remember I would just remove the ignition cord and the car couldn't be started without it.

I was wondering where or if there's one I could remove in my BRZ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

elBarto 05-15-2016 08:02 AM

Just disconnect the battery?

stevesnj 05-15-2016 11:42 AM

Remove the steering wheel, it's very easy to remove.

funwheeldrive 05-15-2016 11:43 AM

Remove ignition fuse?

Tcoat 05-15-2016 11:48 AM

Don't leave the key in it. Already has a pretty effective I mobilizer system. Transponder in the fob prevent hot wiring.

Do you think its going to take you that long to find your license?

@Antix ..... too bad you "lost" your license ...... I hope you make the necessary life style corrections so you can get it reinstated.

In addition to disconnecting the battery, you may consider removing it and hooking it up to a battery tender, that it will be ready to go ..... when you are .....

Fuel pump relay?

ZionsWrath 05-17-2016 03:56 PM

what kind of secure parking? Should be safe no?

nickmerronesucks 05-17-2016 04:01 PM

did you find license yet?

Please circle below

thanks

I really doubt that you can ghetto-engineer any theft deterrent that could match the effectiveness of the OEM system.

All of the suggestions posted so far (disconnect battery, disable ignition, disable fuel pump, etc) have been around for generations, and any competent thief (or mechanic) could circumvent in a matter of seconds.

CBR600RR 05-17-2016 04:02 PM

Asking the real questions: how did you lose your license?

jeffchap 05-17-2016 05:34 PM

I'll sell you my Unichip for $200. There's an immobilizer map available.

Blatant sales pitch is blatant!

Besides the car already has a damn immobilizer chip. Does everybody (except Billwot) think that little blinking light on the dash is a ruse?
Anybody that can get around the immobilizer is going to have the car no matter what else you do to it.

bcj 05-17-2016 08:19 PM

Cement blocks and take the wheels home

mav1178 05-17-2016 08:27 PM

Sell the car.

navanodd 05-17-2016 09:57 PM

Park in wet cement slab.

Or just keep the key safe.

Make sure it is at least half up the wheel hubs.

No it doesn't need that much. If only Toyota/Subaru had listened to everyone and given the car another 40-60hp, it would have been perfect and been able to break free of concrete like a real sports car.

Oh the Prius tires are not grippy enough for the concrete to hold anyway. That is why you have to go half way up the hub or it can just be driven out.

Okay, $180, but that's as low as I can go.

machewcoy 05-18-2016 05:20 AM

Unplug the gas pedal. Or remove the gas pedal all together. It'll take a minute, the hardest part is contorting yourself to get under the dash lol

xmadror 05-18-2016 09:16 AM

you guys have it all wrong
this is what you should do :

I don't know much about the immobilizers but I thought that locks out the ECU or something like that. But the current immobilizer seems it should be sufficient as @Tcoat says. The only way to get around it is if you have a master key from Toyota or something.

Or one of these (at that point it does not matter what you have done):

Exactly. In the end if they want it, and if they're smart enough. They will get it. The only thing that you could do in order to make their job that much more difficult, is to install something like a 2 way Viper alarm with auxiliary features. On my last car I had digital tilt sensor, which would essentially detect the change in the angle of the car (such as if it were to be towed), and set the alarm off. There is also an auxiliary battery option, in case they decide to cut the primary power source of your alarm (the car battery).

So if you're super paranoid, and want to do the best you can in terms of theft deterrents, 2 way Viper alarm with the bells and whistles (it does get quite expensive), and a hidden fuel cut off switch

Shaisters 05-18-2016 11:15 AM

Pull the starter fuse. It's what I did when someone broke into my old house and stole my car keys.

Sarlacc 05-18-2016 11:42 AM

There are any number of ways to immobilize a car. The real trick is to make it temporary.

http://pictures.topspeed.com/IMG/cro...ta-_600x0w.jpg

Permanently immobilized car.

justatroll 05-18-2016 11:47 AM

The BRZ is already one of the most secure cars out there.
Disconnecting the battery will also disable the alarm.

Any thief (worth a damn) that intends to actually steal the car will do it with a flat bed, they don't even have to unlock the doors.

Actual serious thought - make sure your alarm is activated since they are off by default.

Wait....what? I was not aware of this...

guybo 05-18-2016 10:37 PM

In America, this is the best immobilizer money can buy!

Many are not aware of several features. If only there was a way to discover such things...

I'm an engineer by trade, so I never read manuals. I'll happily take things apart to find out how they work, but I won't crack a pedestrian manual.

I'm also a collector at heart. So my hardcopy of the "GT86 owners manual" is carefully preserved in unopened mint condition.

Manuals are getting thinner. Anyone else noticed that? I just installed a new headunit in my truck, and the manual is a folded piece of paper. I haven't read it, of course; but one paragraph caught my eye as I disdainfully discarded it. It said
"Play USB. Please be careful not to crash. Cause the machine to prevent damage. To protect traffic safety, please do not concentrate on driving the process of regulating the product."
Which is nice and friendly of course, but it also confirms that manuals are written by clowns and are therefore utterly useless.

Or written by complete competent engineers and then thrown through Google translate making them appear like idiots.

Would you take your car apart to learn how to reactivate a safety shut down window switch or to learn that the default setting on the alarm is off? Seems a tad extreme.

Well... Writing documentation is generally perceived by engineers as a tedious and boring task, so it's usually assigned to the new clown or the clown who's never busy with important stuff. Or it's postponed until it's too late.

Nah, I would figure those out without taking anything apart :-)
