Gear shifting

Do all FRS' make a clanking noise when shifting gears? Or is this just that mine? 😅

I don't know if I would call it "clanking" but I can definitely hear mechanical shifting when changing gears.

Yes they all make a bit of noise. Not a grinding noise but nice mechanical actuall gear change. One of the first issues everyone noticed about manuals.

You'll be fine. One thing many people do is changed tranny fluid to some pricy gear oil like Motul, Redline, Amsoil, etc. Pretty much everyone is on the same page that switching fuilds made shifting smoother. And on cold days/warm ups 2nd gear is a bit of a struggle to get into but smooth as butter once it's up to temp.

Well, hello, TexasFRS and welcome to our fine forum........

I figure you have a manual transmission ..... ??

If so, yes, the transmission does make some "mechanical" sounds when shifting gears. In the FRS it's more noticeable because of the "light" insulation and because the driver is sitting right next to the transmission.

Also, the shift lever is almost directly in contact with the gears.

Here is my stock suggestions for shifting the FR-S:

First off, this transmission is happier when it is warm.

I would suggest that when shifting, wind up the last gear pretty tight (4-5,000 rpms) before shifting into the next higher gear.

Also, when shifting, pull (or push) the shift lever slowly and firmly into the next gear.

It's not a toggle switch ..... the lever is moving heavy transmission parts.

I suggest you NOT "lazy leg" it ……. do push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor.

If this technique doesn't help, you may consider changing the transmission oil.

No clanking noise on mine.

themadscientist 05-10-2016 07:18 AM

I just hear the mechanisms moving around like they should. It sounds different from this.

Your fine. The gearbox in the 86 is really notchy and has a mechanical feel to it.

RichardsFRS 05-10-2016 01:18 PM

Normal. 15k later and it has quieted down. It usually is quiet 10 min or less after. Driving it.

Celica00 05-10-2016 01:40 PM

You're fine, and welcome to the forum. I notice you're from McKinney. I graduated high school there! (worst time of my life)

Jfheisenberg 05-10-2016 01:45 PM

Mine does it sometimes.... I notice it more when im shifting from 1 to 2nd, happens occasionally

MJones_RB 05-10-2016 01:52 PM

A lot of that "clanking" could be due to how the shifter connects to the transmission externally, with only a flimsy rubber boot to contain the noise. I kind of dig it. Makes me believe I'm driving an old tractor.

I would imagine that you were the type that put the tractor in "road gear", at full throttle, going down a dirt lane .... :D

I feel you on that. I'm graduating this year.

GenRuleAThumb 05-10-2016 11:46 PM

Yes mine does as well 27k Had throw out bearing replaced as it was noisy, dealer said box was fine.

Usually only 1st and 2nd when shes cold.

daiheadjai 05-11-2016 12:09 PM

As others have noted, noise is totally normal with this gearbox.
You'll learn to love it.

I test drove an old FWD car with a semi-decent gearbox (Matrix XRS with the Celica GTS 6-speed) and it felt very rubbery and imprecise (same with the new WRX) compared to the BRZ. Once you get used to it, that direct feel is addictive.

$64M if I'm not mistaken...wonder why our property taxes are so high? Close to Allen, TX. who did it a few years ago...feels like a game of "whose d**k is bigger". Reminds me of the old mouse and lion in the jungle joke.
