1000+ miles

I have a little over 1000 miles now. I drive a lot of miles for work so I drive pretty conservatively most of the time anyways to save gas, so I don't step on the gas pedal too hard and usually upshift way before 4K rpm.

After following the rules for "break-in" has anybody's driving habits actually changed?

FrX 07-03-2012 09:43 AM

I didn't exactly follow the "rules" to begin with...

GMU-BRZ 07-03-2012 10:34 AM

I'm over 1000 and I've still only taken it over 4k twice, each time shifting around 5k. Haven't come close to red line.

This is my first performance car, so I think I'm just used to driving cars really easy.

Dave-ROR 07-03-2012 10:57 AM

I take mine over 4k fairly often, usually not much, I'm just used to shifting at over 4k from my other cars so it just happens.

was385 07-03-2012 10:58 AM

I red-line it occasionally getting on the highway and take it above 4k pretty consistently if I find myself a windy road.

Dadhawk 07-03-2012 11:31 AM

At least once per outing for anything other than "to the grocery store" I'm getting mine above 4K. I just can't help myself, it's so easy to bump off the redline without getting into an "arrest me now" scenario that I just have to do it.

That was one of the single driving forces behind me buying the 86. "Legally" at the limits, yea baby!

helloimgil 07-03-2012 12:12 PM

I've been used to driving cars real easy for the past 7 years or so (once gas prices started going up... I remember when everyone was freaking out when it reached $2/gallon). I always shifted ~3k. Did the same on my BRZ until I hit about 1200. Now I'm shifting at about 4-5k and go to 6k if I find myself on a windy road, still trying to get a feel for the car. Need to test the limits to figure out when it will actually start sliding.

DantKR 07-03-2012 12:42 PM

Normal driving I shift between 3-4k RPM. Usually once or twice a day I take it to 6k RPM in 1st and 2nd.

ultra 07-03-2012 04:42 PM

I've only just crossed 100 miles and I've touched 6k >.<

For the most part anything around 3 - 5k seems to be enough for the day to day stuff, even keeping up with crazy traffic.

Cheddar 07-03-2012 04:56 PM

at around 800 miles I started doing 4gear sprints to redline starting from 70mph.

Id do this about twice a week.

#87 07-03-2012 05:26 PM

I only made it to 6 or 700 doing the 4k break in. Now I redline it daily. But since my commute is mostly highway I still average a decent MPG.

bneale 07-03-2012 05:36 PM

I have to advise all of you not to redline the car until you finish the break in period!

I've noticed in my own FR-S, the noise from the engine starts getting louder as the weeks go on. I drove it for 3 weeks below 4K rpms and only yesterday did I complete the break in period.

I noticed a big change in the engine note as the weeks went on. It's a hard wait but its worth it. I also knew someone who bought a 2009 STI brand new and he noticed a major difference in power output once it was fully broken in. This same person is also going to win the Scion Tuner Challenge so I respect their advice.

Now that the break in is over, I've had it up to 7K and man does it scream! Way louder then I expected.

Laika 07-03-2012 06:14 PM

Pretty much what Dadhawk said. I'll rev it up to a good 5k or so at least once on my way to or from work. Then when I'm just driving for pleasure and I see a good place for it I'll surely wring it out to 7k just once and then a couple 5k jaunts. But for getting groceries or any short ride, I take it easy. I always felt it wasn't good to drive a car hard over short distances.

Black Tire 07-03-2012 07:23 PM

I kept under 4k for over 500 miles. Since then I have had it up over 6k once, and over 5k a couple of times; mostly just getting up to speed on and entrance ramp. The car now has more than 950 miles on it and it seems to want to rev way easier than when I got the car. Perhaps it is making more power, but I really have not pushed it yet even though it has seen higher revs a couple of times so it is difficult to tell. It is more difficult now to keep it under 4k as it really wants to rev fast, even with fairly mundane acceleration/loading. I am planning to change the oil for the first time next week.

Brimford 07-04-2012 01:14 PM

This car wants to be played with, hell the power band doesnt even start until the 3000s. I noticed my best fuel economy is during the 3250-3500k range.

civicdrivr 07-04-2012 01:45 PM

My driving habits have definitely changed since break-in, as evidenced by my gas mileage. I had an average of 31mpg during break in. Now I'm averaging 27mpg.

Me 2... I've been hitting 5k rpm before upshifting now. I just feel this way I can keep up with the prius's when taking off from the red light.

I currently have 1900 miles on mine.. but as soon as I hit 1000 miles I redline my car and always shift from 6200k on first gear half the time.. now im shifting about 4k-6k . .. and the occasional redline .. I try to downshift as much as i can too. I've noticed my BRZ got alot louder once i broke it in.

Do you upshift at such high rpms all the time? I feel like my average MPG is taking a big hit when I do that, but it feels so gooooood.

Do you upshift through each gear too? like 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 4th at those rpms... or do you just jump from say 2nd to 4th since you're already moving so much faster?

blu_ 07-05-2012 11:55 AM

Took it to 7k with around 5 or 6miles on the odometer. Have driven it normal through brake in beside making sure to vary rpms.

I say probably 50% of the time. otherwise.. i shift around 4-5k. I did noticed a 1 mpg decrease driving it like that. Otherwise shifting around 3k-4k i gain that 1mpg back.

Upshifting... it depends if i feel like feeling the "pull" i go through all 1-4. but usually i just accelerate to about 6k on first and second gear only. then shift into 4 skipping 3rd.

I'm having a little trouble reading your English but I think your trying to say you've been redlining the car all day? And now that you've read my statements, you want to do the proper break in?

Well yeah, you can still do it. That's not the question. The question is how much did you beat on the car before stopping to follow the proper break in method? And what effect will that have down the road? Only time will tell.

If I was you, I'd stop doing what your doing and follow the proper break in method.

I can't tell you how much louder my car is now compared to when I first got it. I love the way the engine sounds and I'm constantly doing 7K runs in first or second gear just to hear the engine note. I absolutely love the noise it makes now.

so the car runs faster, smoother and sounds louder after break in period?

jarviz 07-12-2012 04:57 PM

I also noticed that when I have the "recirculate" air button off, the air coming from the outside isn't that hot anymore. I remember the first time I drove it, air coming in from the vents was as hot as a heater. I wonder if that had to do with the break-in too

Blue86 07-13-2012 04:33 AM

I picked mine up today with 10km on the clock. It drives VERY differently to the demo car at the dealership. The dealership car felt sluggish to build revs yet mine revs like a bloody honda! Haven't taken it over about 4.5K rpm so i'm not doing anything silly with it yet but it definitely feels different!

Think i might get it on a dyno after break in and see whats the story with it

Bobasaur 07-13-2012 05:58 AM

I just passed 1000mi today and Wow! The engine really sings after 6k! Anyway, it's like I was driving with only half the car before. I'm slowly incorporating higher revs into my driving. Anyone else get paranoid when the engine gets loud? I need to hear my car from the street to really see how loud it gets. Not sure if the noise just seems loud cuz it's coming in from the noise generator ... Must have friend do drive by soon

Yes! coming from a AT corolla, I still get worried anytime I see the marker go above 4k RPM lol. So not used to making an engine roar and I always feel like I'm hurting when I leave it in a single gear and going to a higher RPM. Love the feeling though :burnrubber:

boredom.is.me 01-22-2013 10:46 PM

The one thing I want to say regards the "break in period".

"Oh look. I just hit 1000 miles. Now I can rev my car." Honestly that sounds kind of stupid since every engine is a little different. It's also a way of reducing the chances of something going wrong in the early stages which is somewhat a scapegoat.

I noticed it yesterday. My FR-S got louder too. And this is a good kind of loud.

BTW, I redlined shortly after leaving the lot. ;)

J-Money 01-23-2013 03:52 PM

i started redlining after 400... I have no problems beside a weird burning smell which went away from changing oil and messing with the exhaust. "Knock on wood"
Now its perfect

boredom.is.me 01-23-2013 04:07 PM

That burning spell is the manufacturing oils that were burning off. Nothing wrong there.
