Best side markers

I have a black BRZ. I want to get rid of the side markers for something that is white, smoked or dark smoked, yet retains the yellow bulbs. I was looking at the vehicle code in California, and it seems that the statute for side markers are that the car has to have at darkness amber lights in the front-side, and they have to be visible.

Quote:

(2) At least one amber side-marker lamp on each side near the front and at least one red side-marker lamp on each side near the rear.
Quote:

(e) Clearance lamps shall be visible from all distances between 500 feet and 50 feet to the front or rear of the vehicle, and side-marker lamps shall be visible from all distances between 500 feet and 50 feet to the side of the vehicle.
So apparently there is nothing against having it smoked as long as it is visible (on a clear night obviously) at 500 ft, which isn't hard. I looked it up and a candle could be seen, if clear and if it was flat enough, up to 48 miles away.

With that said, I wanted to get some opinions on something that looked OEM. What styles are out there? I researched and some look cheap ebay'ish or have too much bling or are too busy. Some have individual LEDs so it stands out too much or has the Casino light look. The other thing I didn't find was examples on black BRZ's of all brands, so any pics would help.

Also, I was thinking of upgrading from a standard amber bulb to a LED bulb, but I didn't know if the intensity would be too high or unfitting to the rest of the car's lights.

Bit disturbed about your comment about a candle being visible from 48 miles. You do know the earth isn't believed flat enough anymore in other places of the world?

He means 48km

On a dark night, you could even see a candle flame flickering up to 30 mi. (48 km) away.

You're talking to an atheist with a BS in Physiology who has a avatar that says Science Bitch... dont overread. I did say if.

@malcomhimself ...thanks for the clarification and the link.

Anyways, any ideas on smoked markers anyone? I only see the Helix ones but the light smoke and dark smoke looks just dirty. The other ones they have are too busy and not amber throughout. I would like a plug n play item.

Yea I did. Not many reviews. No ideas on fitment or leak proof or brackets. Not many on black cars for comparison.

OEM JDM clear markers with orange bulbs are great, well made, don't leak, and won't get you hassled at night.

X2. I had cheap Helix ones, and they leaked every time it rained.

LED86 05-01-2016 11:03 PM

Valenti or avest are the best I've come across. Plug-n-play, no relay required and bright enough even for the smoked versions.

Only a small area lights up. Is the rest reflective? If so, is the smoke version refelective?

Amber leds...from which supplier? Do they look appropriately lit to the same level as the other lights or much brighter?

Do you mean BSc?

BS means something else where I'm from.

Ebay. The seller had included them in the sale so I don't know bulb manufacturer.
I checked my ebay history and seller doesnt have any listed anymore.
And they are appropriate lit.

I got these from ft86speedfactory: http://www.ft86speedfactory.com/heli...e-markers.html.
Bought some orange bulbs (194) from O'Reilly's and some silicon sealant from Home Depot, and sealed up the edges before installing them. I haven't had any trouble with leaks or anything, or trouble from the police.

MidwestFRS 05-02-2016 06:18 PM

I have the helix smoked on currently and have major issues with leaking on drivers side. It has ruined 2 bulbs, corroded the socket and is currently filled halfway with water. Will be replacing this week with Avest [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Marker-Smoked-Signal-Toyota-Subaru/dp/B00XTOZ7GQ"]Amazon.com: LED Side Marker Smoked Black Lens Amber Turn Signal and DRL White For Scion FR-S Toyota 86 Subaru BRZ: Automotive[/ame]

I think regardless of what I get I will be sealing them. Seems like it would be best to play it safe.

I think the ebay options will have to do, but I am still curious if an amber bulb will be enough with a smoked housing or if I should go with led.

Do you have it set to flash with your turn signals or left it alone?

geezerbrzeezer 05-03-2016 03:54 AM

No flash.

Yeah those look sweet.

I ended up going with the flush look from the spec-d version. Im comfortable modifying them if necessary. I decided to just try an amber bulb then upgrade if necessary to LEDS

Helix, definitely not the "best".

They suffice tho.

I bought these on eBay and put the DD amber turn signals. We will see if they leak, but I did transfer the felt from the original markers.

I also had the helix smoked ones, got them replaced with the actual real "jdm" toyota ones and noticed with the helix there was a lot of discoloration and water marks on the diode dynamics bulb and water marking on the inside of the housing. Definitely not worth it.

Good feedback. I think the difference vs OEM amber markers might just be the felt. Do the JDM markers have felt on the sides?

Oh wow, I just noticed that, yes they do, on the top and sides.

Hmm, I think with that confirmation it is safe to say that the difference isn't the felt (OEM having felt and aftermarket not having felt). The felt might be to minimize rubbing against the paint and to create a tighter fit, but it must not be to stop water, if indeed you still have issues with those JDM OEM ones, right? Must just be the integrity of how they are bonded and maybe the amber markers bond better or are made in a different factory.

I think it's the way the glass is sealed to the housing , my helix ones literally split open

02.ACCORD.DUDE 05-28-2016 11:06 PM

Good thing I read this thread... Was about to buy the helix...

SmireyFase 05-29-2016 11:09 PM

fuckkkkkkkkkkkkk I just purchased helix ones a couple hours ago.... I just sent a email asking them not to ship it and cancel my order!

BierMeister 04-20-2019 11:38 AM

Just a heads up for anyone thinking about buying the Helix ones. I got some on Ebay for $25 and they turned out to be Helix branded. I also bought some clear silicone sealant from home depot and applied it to crack between the gray and clear sides of the housing. Hopefully they won't leak.....

I know this is an old thread but FWIW in case there’s anyone wondering which ones to get... if you want clear side markers then go JDM. I’ve had the clear JDM ones with amber bulbs from a local auto shop for 3+ years with no issue. Looks great and meets street regulations.

I'd sometime wish for cheap paint-matched sidemarker deletes to be made/sold, the stealthier looks delete, the better. Less expensive/non carbon look vs verus ones. And replace their function with sidemarkers/turn signals as in intec fender garnishes or side mirrors with turn signals (#1, #2). Highly hate flimsy contruction of OE sidemarker mounting mechanism :(
