Gear indicator (G-on) shows 2 when in 3rd gear

When shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear, the gear indicator goes from 2 to 2. Other gears work fine. Any ideas?

Thanks

You bought the car modded didn't you? Did they maybe change something in the shifter/tranny that messed up the position switch? Just a millimeter out could throw it off.

c8Face 04-28-2016 11:40 AM

Yes I bought the car with mods. As far as I know, it was only the coilovers, brakes, and wheels/tires that were changed. The shifter feels like stock, but I could be wrong. Thanks for the input.

twag4 04-28-2016 11:49 AM

I'll bet your missing bottom of the 3 is a burnt out led/lcd.

Freude am Fahren 04-28-2016 11:52 AM

I have a feeling the 1-6 indicator uses speed/rpm to figure out which gear it's in, which is why it only reads with the clutch out (as opposed to reverse, which must use the reverse switch). So maybe a final drive change? Or maybe differently sized front/rear tire diameter. Don't know why it would only effect 3rd, maybe just how ranges work out in the computer. Just spit-balling here.

Wait is the gear LED modded? Is that what you're all talking about?

I never got a gear display with mine :(

Sure you do. We all do. You just have to set it up.

Thanks guys

Did they put this in the manual?

Yep. It is pretty buried though. Also reads like old VCR instructions. They don't make it clear that the car has to be off and in accessory mode to do it. I sat there for half an hour trying to figure out why it wouldn't work.

SeratoBeats 04-28-2016 01:29 PM

Lol Wow this is awsome

Just watched the vid. I'm going to set the economy on mine and turn on the gear indicator. Not needed really but it's nice to display.

Thanks again!

It is fun to try to hit the shifts for economy for a while but gets old fast. Your mileage will improve but you may fall asleep while driving.

jasonojordan 04-28-2016 01:54 PM

So you mean you dont get the best economy when you shift at redline in each gear?

SeratoBeats 04-28-2016 01:59 PM

I figured this

I'll just switch back and forth lol

Very good point abut the final drive ratio. I did notice the rpms seemed high when driving in the city (although I only picked up the car last night). I'll have to monitor my rpms at various speeds/gears and compare to videos online. As mentioned above, I bought the car with 2500km on it, and it had a bunch of track ready parts (AP Racing nrakes, Ohlins coilovers, sticky tires, etc). It wouldn't surprise me if there was a final drive ratio change.

c8Face 04-28-2016 10:40 PM

Based on the speed/rpms while driving home today, it looks like the previous owner did perform a final drive ratio change. In 3rd gear at 3000rpm, my speed was around 49km/h. From what I have read in other threads, the stock ratio in 3rd gear at 3000rpm is 54km/h.

I knew there were mods done when I bought the car, but this was a bit of a surprise!

Thanks for the input everyone.

pcuerpo 04-28-2016 11:27 PM

yup, more or less the final drive has been changed if there is a difference between your gear indicator and your actual gears.. what i did, i asked my tuner to adjust it when they tuned my car so now it shows the correct gears in the indicator

one thing also to find out if the final drive has been changed is to check the top speed for each gear.. i believe first gear maxes out at 60kph and with a 4.556 final drive, i think its around 49kph if im not mistaken

c8Face 04-28-2016 11:46 PM

Good to know that it can be adjusted. I'll probably just leave it as is and keep the G-off setting. It's a cool feature, but something I can live without. I was more concerned that I had a problem with the car. The final drive change explanation totally makes sense. Thanks!

Wonder if there are more surprise mods? Have you checked if it is tuned in anyway?

I have acually asked the dealership where I bought the car to contact the original owner and ask what mods were done and at what shop he worked with. Hopefully they can get in touch with him so I can get a bit of history on the car.

In any case, I plan to take the car to an indy shop for an oil change at 5000kms. They know Subies very well and maybe they can provide some insight.

To be honest, I was originally looking for a non-modded BRZ but when I came across this one, it was too tempting to resist. The prior owner must have been a true enthusiast with the type of parts installed.

So far I have identified:
1. AP Racing big brake kit font/back
2. Ohlins coilovers
3. Final drive ratio change (I suspect it is from MFactory due to the increase in noise)
4. Eibach anti roll kit
5. 18 inch rims (still trying to figure out the model)
6. ....

I would be surprised if there are not some more hidden mods with that list.
It is a long shot but have you looked through the Vancouver regional sub or the build threads on here? You may stumble across a thread on it.

I have looked, but unfortunately have not found anything online. The previous owner only had the car for 6 months, and apparently traded it in for the new MX-5 - he must have read the recent Motor Trend comparison :)

One more goodie I forgot to mention were the Weathertec mats in the front/back/trunk. :)

Ohhhhhh now it is a game! When on the computer and not my phone I am going on a quest. Probably futile but I will enjoy the challenge and the search.

@Tcoat, I posted this in another thread, but I did find out a bit of history on my car!

Nice work!

I have the same issue. Ever since I did warranty work on the tranny, my gear indicator shows a random gear whenever I shift to neutral. My backup camera stopped working too. Wack.

There are two switches in the transmission. One tells the ECU when it's in neutral. The other is for reverse. I wonder if they forgot to connect them.

The connectors sit right on top of the bell housing. Do your backup lights work?

I checked this morning and my back up light doesn't work. Does that mean they have to drop the transmission again to fix this? Thanks

Not at all. The connectors are right on top where the engine and transmission meet. You'll see two sets of wires coming up along the top of the transmission into a little bracket. They are color coded so it should be clear whether or not they are connected.

Man, that would be great if that's it. Fingers crossed.

I finally found the switch after doing 30 minutes of research.

And yes, you were right. Both switches (grey and red) were not plugged in. Thanks again!
