Seattle drivers are weird

On the way to work this morning I had quite an unusual experience. I was driving along 99S by Greenlake and some dude in an old black Nissan Pickup came up behind me real fast and proceeded to get in my bubble (3-5ft from my tail) and sit there. I pulled into the right lane at the first opportunity I had (probably about a quarter of a mile later) to let the guy pass and he pulls alongside me and proceeds to throw something at my car. It thudded off the left rear quarter and left a small dent and some scuff marks. I got his license plate. I'm not even mad, I just don't get what I did wrong or why I deserved to have something thrown at my car. What are my options going forward?

File a police report but it'll be your word against his without evidence. Time to invest in a dash cam.

That's kinda what I figured and also why I'm not seething with rage at the moment. Time to move along I suppose, so on a related note: does anyone know of good PDR services in the Seattle area? I may as well knock out a couple other dings in the left side of my car left by irresponsible Seattle drivers.

just curious about this though - if your dashcam is only front facing, how would it be evidence if an event happened in the back? I guess something major such as being rear ended would be obvious but for something that won't shake the car much and just make a sound (sound could be anything without vision), would it still be valid evidence?

Freeman 04-26-2016 11:27 AM

I am not a police officer nor an attorney so I can't answer that one. I will say dash cams with an S (as in multiple) might help in the future.

I believe that would be circumstantial at best. The only good evidence would be from a witness or if the action itself was recorded.

NO SHIT!

Most of the erratic driving I see is from vehicles with Oregon plates. Stopping at green lights, etc. Hmm

I'm shooting front and back. I felt it only made sense and it was easy to setup.

I see a lot of left lane campers on I5 with Vancouver plates as well.

I actually prefer Oregon drivers. I go on vacation down there once a year and they're usually really great about not being in the left lane unless passing. Most Washington drivers suck at it :(

bcj 05-23-2016 10:29 PM

Most of the out of state plates are gawking at the scenery and going 10 under the posted speed.
Then they don't pull over to let the line behind them past.
Utah, Virginia, Texas and Oregon in the last week.
Next week: New York, Tennessee and Illinois. You'll see.

lizbrayan 05-23-2016 10:53 PM

I live in jersey and people here just have no clue how to drive what so ever. No one follows the left lane to pass rule and if they do its only on the major highways that go cross country. I once saw a man in a audi cut a lady off that was in a bmw so obviously she got pissed. Caught up to him in the next lane, yelled at him and threw a bottle of some sorts straight into his car no probs going like 60 mph!

Djratrap 05-24-2016 11:05 AM

Too easy to get a drivers license. They should make the written test fives times harder and require a mandatory drive test for all ages.

shiumai 05-24-2016 11:25 AM

start carrying stuff to throw back at them.

Locust 05-25-2016 01:07 AM

I'll just leave this here.... http://www.seattlerex.com/the-worst-...-dissertation/

And yes, it's too easy to get a license here. If you have a license ANYWHERE else in the world you are simply given a license when you come here.

Imrac 05-25-2016 11:43 AM

We also have some of the longest on and off ramps, yet people still don't get up to highway speed before trying to merge. Or they start slowing down a mile before they get to their exit.

If two cars are doing 60 MPH and there is a gap between them, guess how fast that gap is moving? It's not 45 freaking miles per hour!!!

Oregon and Texas drivers here in my part of CA do that too. Months ago had TX driver throw slushy at Miata driver and they got into fist fight. TX driver got suspended license or something. Forgot what. CHP is family friend and shared story. Turned out miata was going like 80, and TX driver was pushing him.

My experience with Oregon drivers here are lame and jerk related. They have cut me off through shoulder and once through yellow lane. Like wth bruhs....

CA drivers are worst though overall. (And I'm from CA)

Love driving in CA, especially LA. So much more aggressive. Traffic actually flows. FLOWS! Something we've never seen here.

Till you get a hit and run and you're stuck with:

A) sh1t car that's barely driveable or not so.
B) high premium haha

Been hit twice. Once in Anaheim and another in Santa Ana. Both drove off asap. Found one of the hit n run cars, police wrote a vague report, nothing happened.

I thought Washington was full of good drivers? Oregon is so so 6/10. Tx it's too aggressive. Everyone has a big truck they use as a dd and an attitude to raise Satan himself. Lol always hearing Washington people are polite?

bcj 05-25-2016 12:36 PM

At a 4 way stop people wave the other drivers on.
Legally they're supposed to have right of way, but no, "You go first"

Gah. RTFM

Washington drivers are horrendous and very self centered. If they're lost they don't care that people are behind them they'll just stop in the middle of the street. If they're about to miss their exit because they weren't paying attention they'll stop and force a 2mph merge across all 5 lanes of I5 because they can't be bothered to own up to their mistake and take the next exit down. I could go on for days but I'd rather have predictable aggressive drivers than unpredictable clueless ultra slow drivers any day.

Goodness!

In Ireland I made a gazillion mistakes and not one honk or anything! Everyone so very patient and nice about my mistakes. Some EU nations have so much to teach us. Man oh man. Not moving to Washington then.

Go drive through France or Italy and see what your opinion of EU drivers is like!

soulreapersteve 05-25-2016 09:46 PM

Prius drivers = horrible
Taxi drivers = horrible

Taxi drivers who drive Priuses (prii??) = watch the fuck out!

I was gently cruising along at 40 mph on a main street when I suddenly saw two taxi coming up fast in my rear mirror. They passed me on both sides going at least 60...

Sometimes, they stop right in the middle of the street to adjust their GPS without emergency lights or anything.

(and yes i know its legal, i have no issue with lane splitting and think it should be legal, just not doing 50 between stopped traffic)

Traffic in California = crawl at 5mph. Traffic in Seattle = drive 15mph for 50 feet then stop for 2 minutes. There's a pretty big difference in the traffic patterns and the level of driving skill of the people on the roads.

IIRC there are limits but what's a cop going to do when stuck in the same traffic? France was insane. Bikers regularly split lanes in heavy traffic moving normally. Twice in one week guys blew past me within inches riding wheelies. Pretty impressive, actually.

I see weird shit everyday going to work and home. you are not alone bro!
People wanna race me everyday. They think the road is like a race road or track.

Imrac 05-27-2016 05:38 PM

I had the weirdest experience with a Washington driver a few years back.

5:30 in the morning during late winter (Still dark out). I was turning left onto an on ramp accelerated to about 45 MPH before I realized the tail lights in front of me were coming up quick. I hit the brakes and come to a stop behind them.

I am extremely confused, no one else around, just stopped right in the center of the lane, no hazards, no brake lights, just their running lights.

I stopped and waited about 10 seconds before honking and flashing my lights a couple of times. I see them take the car OUT OF PARK and start driving onto the freeway....

LIKE WTF she stopped at the bottom of an on ramp in the center and parked?! Who the hell thinks that is a smart idea...

I can do one better. In Minneapolis, on the interstate, not once but twice I came up on someone backing up in the off ramp to get back onto the highway. One of the exits was just beyond the crest of a hill or something that made it pretty blind.

Stay frosty, people, because that shit's everywhere.

Okay, one up McGee to the rescue.

I saw someone on I-90 a couple weeks ago back up ON THE FREEWAY SHOULDER to get to a missed exit ramp with a shitload of cars around and traffic moving at 60+mph.

At least on the off-ramp people are usually slowing down.

Simple explanation, legalized marijuana...

Wildseven 06-10-2016 06:22 AM

I was on a side street turning right on a two lane road. Stopped and looked both ways, no car left but a truck approaching on the right. As I'm turning staying in the lane, the truck in the other lane flicks me off! I was hella confused, I wasn't even near his lane like I coulda hit him or anything, so I turned around and caught him at a light and motioned him to roll down his window. I asked him "why he flicked me off?" And his response, "you guys and your zippy little cars!" And he rolls his window back up... Wtf...
