How many keys did you get from Subaru dealer?

I bought my MY2014 BRZ almost 2 years ago from a suby dealer in socal and i received 2 FOBs. I thought that was normal but now my suby dealer calls me out of the blue yesterday and says they found a key that matches my VIN nbr.

So i was supposed to get 3 FOBs. Is the same for everyone else who has a BRZ?

Tectoniic 04-22-2016 01:20 PM

Conspiracy Theory: This is a new dealer plot to get you to stop by so they can tell you about the MY17 refresh and get you to upgrade

Tcoat 04-22-2016 01:23 PM

FRS comes with two and a valet so doubt the BRZ is any different.
The keys do not show VINs on them. Unless they meant that there was a tag on it with your number.
Was the car new?

Actually THAT would get my alert level raised.

AFAIK the only way to steal one of htese cars is to have a new key made by the dealer, but even then I thought that it had to be "married" to the car BY the dealer.
I don't think you can just order a new key and have it work with the car.

SO I would be VERY curious WHY they ended up having a new key...

And I only got two key-fobs. and I think I got a valet, although I don't recall what I did with it now that I think about it...

On a slightly unrelated note: I just noticed the other day that my 99 Chevy Suburban had the KEY CODES written on a card in the owners manual that sat in the glove compartment of my suburban for the last 15 years....Good thing the people who like to rifle through my car whenever I forget to lock it didn't stumble upon that little morsel.
All they would have had to do is take that key code to a Chevy dealer and get a key made...

MisterSheep 04-22-2016 01:34 PM

I only got 1 key

Isn't the valet done by just sliding your key out and giving them the fob only? then they can't open the trunk (assuming you pressed the button in the trunk).

I didn't know there was a 'separate' valet key? I got two fobs, both with slide-out key.

brandonblt2 04-22-2016 01:44 PM

I can confirm I got only 2 keys and valet

MisterSheep 04-22-2016 01:47 PM

Wow i'm starting to feel jipped guys.. I want 2 keys..:(

Yup same here and same when my friend got her 2009 Lexus IS250.

Not sure what is this 3rd valet key.

+1 wtf is a separate valet key?

I just got two identical key fobs.

Yes I'm sure this is some kind of next level marketing shit to get me to come in and test drive some WRXs and maybe buy some other shit. But the dealer is not that far from my house and i dont feel right with my key just sitting with a dealer at all.

Valet key is just a key with no buttons on it that only works in the ignition.

Have you used both of the keys you have now? Maybe one of them was wrong all along.

GeorgeJFrick 04-22-2016 02:04 PM

I'm guessing this is for non-push-to-start:

Sorry. i did not get a valet key. I have a BRZ Limited so theres no reason to for me to get a key without a FOB because Limited models do not have a key ignition. So i only got 2 FOBs.

Probably just has a tag with your VIN number on it then and when you get there it will not work. Marketing scheme looks more realistic every minute.

Wasn't suggesting that, was answering the side question that came up about some people getting 2 keys + valet. In their case, it's a keyed ignition. For a non-keyed ignition; we all seem to agree its two fobs only.

If they give you another fob, that's like $425.00 if they can be paired with a different vehicle... otherwise a free third is sweet.

We don't get that with Toyota and Subaru that has push button start.

I always got 3 keys (2 masters and 1 valet) with my older cars so this is a first for me, but I knew before hand from my friend with the push button start Lexus.

BTW this new design is stupid too cuz I should disable the alarm before I give the fob to the valet, but there is no button under the dash that can quickly put it in valet mode like my old Integra with the OEM Alpine alarm. I can't remember the sequence to disarm the alarm off the top of my head.

Once you arm the BRZ and then proceed to stick the key into the door to open, the alarm would go off (I tested this with a valet at TD Tower downtown lol).

My reply is the same as George's!^^^^

I'm still kinda confused as to how the valet key for non-push-start cars work...

Isnt the point of the valet key to allow the valet to park your car but not access your trunk or w/e?

With the BRZ Limited, I just pull the key out of the fob and give the valet the fob. With the truck lock enabled, only the key I removed can open it up.

Is the valet key for non-push-start cars keyed differently so they work on the ignition but not the trunk?

Yes, they are probably keyed differently. The valet key will allow the engine to start but cannot unlock any other key slots (glove or trunk) usually.

yeah, just don't leave the key in the car with it running while you pick up your pizza.

I'm more surprised that this many people with BRZ's use Valet parking. Shouldn't y'all be in like, Maseratis or something? Or is it just the Texas in me that says only the rich people use Valet parking?

Woah woah woah. Nobody valets my baby. I've seen what those guys do with cars first hand.

A lot of parking garages in NYC aren't self-park. You gotta give your car to the attendant at the front of the garage, and then he/she parks it somewhere.

Theres a lot of classy restaurants in LA that are valet only as well. so theres no way around it sometimes.

Yep same here.

And sometimes the cost is worth the convenience. I remember last black friday, my friend convinced me to drive her to roosevelt field mall (major mall in Long Island) and the traffic was insane. People were getting into accidents just trying to park. The Bloomingdales there had valet parking for $7, that was well worth it lol.

There are a lot of non-classy restaurants that do the same thing too (many have limited parking).

Packofcrows 04-22-2016 05:38 PM

2. both have remote.

ronboogieon 04-23-2016 02:33 AM

2 keys. The only time I tried to valet the car, I actually had to park it myself cuz the dude didn't know how to drive stick! lol

Sounds like you need to go to some nicer places :D

nova.86 04-23-2016 09:21 PM

Going to Vegas in the summer around June, forced to do Valet usually, good to know I can just lock my trunk and give them the fob, I just gotta remember to put back my rear seats otherwise there's no point in locking the truck if they're folded down lmao

ze12o 04-23-2016 11:50 PM

my 2015 limited also came with two of those.
