How did you get into cars?
How did you guys/gal(s?) become car people? And if you got a love for a certain brand feel free to include
Mine was when I was 9 and we went to my uncles place. My uncle had just bought himself a new car and when the grown up were all busy talkin he didnt want me to get bored so he asked me if I wanted to take a spin in his new car which turned out to be a black mkIII supra turbo. one ride in that thing and I was hooked soo amazed by what it could do and was and of course that developed my love for Toyota |
I didn't know anything about cars until I turned 18 and got my first car. I literally was car-stupid. I couldn't name a Camry if you pointed to one on the road.
Now I'm proud to say I've learned a lot and made significant improvements. I was previously into computers so I don't blame myself for not knowing anything. |
Since I was 15, and heavily in to mechanics since I was 16 and got my 1st car and rebuilt the engine
|
I kinda.. just got into cars this year. I didn't know anything about cars (still somewhat am lol) I seriously... couldn't tell apart from a Celica and a supra. Most of my friends are car enthusiast or racers and they would ALWAYS talk about it. Me? I was the person who is majoring in the health field and wasn't so interested. Especially since I was more into the PC gaming rigs and.. computers. (I also hate driving because of my car. I was involved in a 5 car accident because some crazy Persian girl decided to not break at a stop light.) So I hated it. Lol
Then.. when I went to a few car meets due to my friend dragging me... I met some mixed Japanese girls who drifted and ever since I've fallen in love with drifting. Went to some canyons/mountain runs and BAM. Got me hooked. Also didn't help that I got caught up in photography as well... Going to different places to take photos and cars or even attend photoshoots. I learned somethings here and then but never really fully understood everything. I picked up stick shift on my own. Mostly by watching my friend's drive and talk about it, so when I got to drive the 180sx it was pretty easy. Until they asked me if I wanted to pick up drifting.. and well I learned it but.. all I can say is.. I'm still learning. LOL don't have a proper car to drift (yet.) So you won't see me in this forum putting my 2¢ in engine/drivetrains etc. I'm not educated enough in cars to say anything; although I would love to learn. Ask me about different diseases.. how to treat broken bones.. what happens in an x-ray lab etc and I can help with that, but cars? Lol I struggled to find the water cap in my car for my windshield wipers. hahaha Sorry long post. |
When I was 17, I was really interested in cars and bikes. I kinda like cars more than bikes. I'm not knowledgeable about mechanical stuff, but that doesn't mean I can't do it. Some regular stuff like change the coilover and s*** should be no problem. I like seeing people drifting, but never attempt once. Hopefully, I will soon( out of the road, of course).
|
^pretty much the same as dark but it was since i was real young like 9 because my dad would always take me to my 4 uncles seperate workshops, kind of the same reason i dont know much about cars is because everytime something went wrong all i had to do as take it to one of their shops and the problem would be fixed

For me, it's in my DNA. My father's side is pure Racing-holic. My father & uncle used to race in Wangan here's the pic of my father's SKyline Ken & Mary Edi. w my mother
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...05/skyline.jpg Currently my uncle is still car-mania (my dad converted into bike-mania). He own several GT-R (two R32, he just love R32). Here's a pic of my uncle's "show car". That GT-R is he's baby, so he didn't even let me sit inside  http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...5/GTR32-03.jpg Mother's side is just power-mania. Never seen grandfather driving 4 cylinder cars. He always had I6, v6, & currently own v8 Nissan Cima. When mother was young, she drove Honda City Turbo. w City Turbo she ran Irohazaka several time (so she claims). I'm both racer & mechanic (try to be anyways). Went to several events & do almost all the work on my car (as long as it doesn't need special tools). Here's a pic of current car when I finish overhauling the engine. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...1091134-00.jpg & me & my friends waiting to get into the track http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...12_2169776.jpg I did several touge races... and I mean "touge" & not a "canyon" w my cousins, but I learned my lesson and stop racing in touge (in night time). So I was born to love cars & born to race.:bellyroll: |
Back in the early 90s i was about 10 or 11 while i still lived in Jamaica i remember my neighbors friend drove a white turbo supra...was clueless back then...then i payed more attention to the cars i saw around me...it was a love for the EG6 civic si, early integras/and DC2s, then turbo starlets and the ford sierra cosworth (best thing ford ever made), by the mid 90s i was hook. then came to the states my dad had a 88 celica i think i know it was FR thats when i learned how to drive then in 02 i bought my first new car a Blue RSX-S...now waiting on the FT86 lol

Nice GTR your uncles got man. I wish I had one LOL I prolly got into cars when i was 17 since I had a few friends who were enthusiasts and went to car meets and such. |
Grew up with dirtbikes and quads so I knew motors. Once I got old enough to drive, the fast and furious and need for speed game were huge and got me into the import scene (haha don't hate) I went to school, found a good job, and now I'm a certified tech.

I was given a little plastic '30's looking Ford sedan toy car from someone in the family (can't remember who) the day I was born.
Rest is history. Oh ichi, I agree with your Uncle: R32 > All modern GTR's, especially black R32's... I say modern, because the best GTR ever, is the one, the only, the Hakosuka! I'd give both balls to own a KPGC10. Kids be damned, I want one! I'd say limbs, but then I couldn't enjoy it. |
My uncle bought me my first road & track magazine when I was about 10, and then I instantly loved cars. I still get the magazine today, but I read autoblog on a daily basis instead.

Back when I was like... 5
My Uncle and Dad both owned AE86, Story was Dad was saving up for a 240z but went to test drive a 86 with my uncle and both decided to buy one off the lot. MY father got a Levin and my Uncle got a Trueno. Uncle had the cream white with black panda config and my dad got a silver Levin. Thought I didn't spend much time with my father growing up I lived with my uncle and he would take me out to drive in the 86 all the time, sometimes in the back roads of Thailand. He would also take me out to those R/C car tracks and built me an RC car to race with the other people over there. After all of that he would share with me his car magazines which he would bring back from Japan, since he was a reporter. My father and Uncle both lost their 86 at different times in an accident where someone slammed into them. My father 86 was parked, my Uncle was hospitalized after being rear ended by a drunk Biker. the bike was inside the hatch part D: After a while I came to live with my dad and he still had a Levin(bought another one), a different one an American one. Unfortunately after an accident while playing soccer he messed up his knee and was unable to drive a manual car normally. So he sold it for an automatic Honda Civic. He was depressed and became somewhat anti with cars until I started talking to him about the 86 again once I grew up. Now he's into it again. Uncle died recently from a heart attack but before he left we were just talking about the FT86 even left me some money in his will, hoping I get a Toyota. So with the influence of these two people, I came to love cars. :) and hope to continue my family legacy in getting the spirit of the 86 models. thought I hope I don't lose my FT86 in an accident D: and it be nice if it wasn't a Scion and a Toyota. Thought... I'm sorta waiting on the Subie. |

I think the Ford GT40 was technically a Lola. |
I think I was 5 when I got into cars. Ended up finding some Mitsubishi brochures around the house.
I liked the 2nd gen Eclipse quite a bit... |
i've loved cars as long as i can remember. when the F40 first came out, i got a poster of it and put it on my bedroom wall. :D

For me it started with my dad's '72 Nova SS! He had that thing till the early 80's and by the time I was able to walk it was time to trade it in. Every time he started it up in the garage that thing growled like a lion in a den! :party0030: Just like most kids it all started on 2 wheels! My older brother got me into BMX racing and first bike was a Skyway T/A; T/A stood for "Totally Aerodynamic" just to show you how fun it was growing up in the 80's :bellyroll: My dad became a Toyota fanatic in the 80's and owned a '80 Corona, '83 Tercel and an '88 Toyota truck in which my sister turned it into a "mini-truck" since that was the style back then! Our's was just like this but red... Enkeis, solid shell, the dual wiper blades, Alpine pull out radio (you guys remember that), the blue CA plates etc!! This guy's truck brings back memories!! :bellyroll::bellyroll: Remember when it was legal to ride in the bed of a truck! http://www.flickr.com/photos/mortonp...ol-857221@N25/ |

Well I remember as a little boy The first career I wanted to be "when I grew up" was a car designer. I always had an interest in cars since then (egged on by my dad), but it wasn't until I was 17 and got my 3000gt VR4 when I fell in love. The bug bit me hard. Now I love everything to do with cars and now motorcycles too.

Oh to add-on onto my post.. I've also been influenced by my friends to get into cars. :P
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dg1uM...el_video_title That's a little snippet of what I do with friends. :) Yes there are a lot of BMWs.. and yes those are just their toys. :x And to answer any other questions.. Yes that is me at the end. Yes that NSX is real. Yes the driver of the NSX also owns the following most expensive bmw in that lot. Lol And yes this is Azuza |
It's my parents fault. lol! I think I was 3 or 4. They bought me one of those Hotwheels 20-car box sets for Christmas, and *BAM* I was hooked. I honestly thought it was the most magical thing I'd ever seen. My dad was staring at me and saying, "Go ahead! Open it up!" You think a kid that young would have torn through that box in a hurry. Not me! It took me 5 minutes of staring at those cars before I even attempted to open the box.
But *sigh* I didn't grow up around cars and therefore never truly had much hands on experience. Sadly, even to this day the most I've ever done is super basic maintenance -- change oil, spark plugs, etc. The thing is, I still really want to go a school or something and maybe major in body work and metal fab. |
My family has always been into cars - Mum and Dad bought a Ford XR8 when I was about 12, oldest brother had an R32 Skyline around that time, and the 2nd oldest brother had a Honda Prelude a little while afterwards... Obviously being taken for rides in all of them implanted the idea that I love cars into my brain...
A few years later the 2nd oldest brother bought a modded Honda Civic, he took that up to 500-and-something hp, at that time the oldest brother had an R32 Skyline GTS-T, and I had been bought.... a Nissan Maxima... I took care of that thing like it was a Supra though :P After that I sold the Maxima and managed (with a loan from dad) to get a Non-turbo Supra, while the oldest had an R33 GTS-25T. A little while after that the 2nd oldest brother bought an Integra for DD'ing, and traded the civic for 2 Integras, one for racing and one for parts. Then I sold my Supra, and bought my current UK-spec TT Auto, the oldest had an R33 GTR and the 2nd oldest has an Accord. Oldest has since sold the GTR for a VZ-R Pulsar becuase the GTR sucks down too much fuel ;) |
When I was 8 my dad built a 69 Nova SS. I "helped" from beginning to end. When it was all finished he took me out in the country and let me drive it. After he and my mom split up a few years later, I started looking at modern cars. I fell in love with the S13. Since then I have been on a quest for the S16. I thought the Genesis Coupe was what I wanted, then I heard about the FT86.
I've also had a couple of bikes for my speed addiction. |

Meh, I didn't care a flip about cars until I had my first truck. Then I taught myself different cars, the brands, engine layouts, fueling systems, engine tech, etc. Nothing too technical but enough to be dangerous. While growing up I spent more time taking things apart and forgetting how to put them back together than anything. I probably played too many video games more recently too much NeedforSpeed. I even bought a racing wheel to drive on NFS. I'm still not as much of a racing fan as a car fan. But I prefer my gears manually selected and the rear wheels driven.

When I was 10, my mom hired this guy to drive my brother and I from school...who drove a WRX. Riding home in his WRX was pretty exciting rofl.
I actually don't even have my license yet (18 in ~ 1 week rofl) since my parents said I'm never getting a car. I bike around a lot, and man does it suck. Crap gets in the eyes, it's tiring, and when it rains I have to ride standing up to prevent the water spraying up from soaking my butt. So I really enjoy driving, even if it's my mom's ginormous Honda Pilot with her sitting there telling me I'm turning too hard >_> The automatic transmission drives me crazy though. Had some bouts of car mania from getting fed up with biking, and I came across the FT-86, and decided instantly that it would be the car I will buy when I'm like 23 or something. Looks great, 6 speed manual, small engine (low insurance/fuel cost), Japanese reliability, couldn't be more perfect :D EDIT: actually, if it comes with Valvematic, it'll be even more perfect. |
For me cars have always been in the blood.
My dad has owned alot of cars and owned quite a few oddballs. Dad owned Subarus, Jowetts, Borgward Group cars and lots of others. Ever since I could remember I would go on Car club runs and Rallys with my Mum and Dad. I would go out help dad restore his Jowetts. My passion is for Subarus (plus anything from FHI ), Jowetts, Aswell as pretty much any thing fitted with a boxer motor , weather its a flat twin or a flat 12 I dont care. Ive always wanted a modern verson of a Jowett Jupiter or Javlin which are flat 4 and RWD coupe and or Sedan. So theys why im very keen for a FT86. I used to look at dads world car guides dating from 1979 to about 93. I would go to the Subaru section and look for hours at the XT/XT6 with 2.7L and the SVX with 3.3. I said I would get one of each of those. I eventually did. loved driving them. Fun to drive and they went pretty much any where. My 1st car was a 1982 Subaru Leone wagon with 1600cc and front wheel drive. I could never kill it. Body suffered from rust tho. Lots of memories. Drove it every where. I remember hearing dad tell stories about some of the cars he used to have. Made me want to own some the same. One I eventually found was a yellow 1973 Subaru 1400 GSR coupe with 93Bhp twin carb motor. Man that thing was fast, handled well and its was pretty much orignal. It was bit ruff. But I still drove it around. Ive taken it off the road to restore... eventually when I got some income again :) |
Usually I get in to cars thru the door.....:slap:<~~~me again

I got in to cars due to my dad, he was in to cars but not tuning i still remember his cars a 1967 mustang, 1978 datsun 280Z, 1989 240sx hatch then it got boring 1997 mercedes SLK and now some odd reason a acura RL SH-AWD :iono:
I use to get mad when he tells me I can't go out with friends sunday cuz I'll be doing oil change or change spark plug or flush the radiator or change brake pads on his and my moms car. but I was late in tuning game didn't start till after college. |
