This is why every wheel I personally own is forged.

Good thing he had so much run off. If he was on a course, or section, with less that could have been very, very bad.

Poor guy had to wait for what seemed like more than half the entire day for the event to end so they could tow his car from way out there. Everyone kept commenting about the unnerving sight of a car way out there just chilling in the mud when coming up on riverside...

DarkSunrise 04-11-2016 04:06 PM

I've never seen anyone so pumped about an off before.

Absolutely... I mean that is awesome that I lost a wheel and F'd up the front of my car! Sooo cool. Let's do it again. I'm sure I would have verbalized my feelings as well, but probably not so much on the excited side of the scale. Good for him to take it all in stride. Just a different kind of human.

Also a good lesson to share about the wheels for sure. And also maybe to try to not to jump the curbing at 80 as well. Clearly the wheel had an issue before he took to the track, but IMO hitting curb such that you leave the ground probably didn't help.

I've done that thousands of times with my BBS, and never had an issue. In fact, I'm the third owner of my set of BBS, and both previous owners had them on race cars that only saw track use.

strat61caster 04-11-2016 05:52 PM

Watch the video again, at 55s, dude looks left and sees his wheel flying away at what, 70mph? 85? If that's not a sight to see I don't know what is.

Having a good attitude about "shit happens" while doing this kind of thing is the difference between having a good time and doing it for most of your life or having high blood pressure, getting burned out, and being compared to Juan Pablo Montoya.

I'm not a track day guy (yet) but the one time I did do a day session at Watkins Glen my instructor frowned upon such things. The idea was to touch the edge of the curbing at the apex without hopping over it. Of course, as a very much amateur that I was, I certainly wasn't approaching the speeds this dude was in the turns so it was a lot easier to avoid such heavy contact. I was more interested in negotiating the course correctly than about lap times.

It just seems to me if you're not wheel to wheel with someone that leaving the ground might be able to be avoided? I'm sure I'll eat those words someday....

So true on both statements.. How did that old country song go? "You picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel...."

At Buttonwillow, the only way to get faster Bus Stop into Riverside is to hop that curb.

Every single person wanting a fast time at that track does it.

Where he lost his wheel, I was doing ~85MPH on the same tires.

Someone with much bigger balls than me would do 90+ WOT.

It's frowned upon the same way you're supposed to brake straight, and not go wide open throttle until you're straight, and smooth is fast.

Once you have a grasp of the basics, a lot of the techniques used to teach beginners fundamentals go out the window.

Maybe it's just the camera, or more likely the car, but neither video looks as violent as the lost wheel dude. It is most certainly the same line though. Great video's!

Here's a better shot of what 99.99999% of guys at Buttonwillow do to drive fast:

I did a slide (I think shocks are donezo) and about a 20 degree angle into the apex at 97mph with a car that likes to rotate more than stick. I think you will be fine. ;)

The old guys didn't come out to show the young bloods on how to go fast. Those guys are the real God Hands. :D

jmimac351 04-11-2016 09:17 PM

I saw a Miata wheel from a well known aftermarket Miata wheel vendor do the same thing at Watkins Glen. It wasn't the first time that'd happened with that particular wheel, that I'd heard of. That vendor made changes in the casting process to resolve the issue. Street tires may be "OK" with Chinese-ium wheels. I would not run real grip on them. If real grip and curbs cause Enkei wheels to bend...

I'm pretty sure smooth is fast even at the top level of motorsports.

I love watching rally as well. I was at Pikes Peak to see him smash the record. What I don't understand is how in the world do you sit in the passenger seat, not look up and not puke?

Adrenaline.

Northwest86 04-12-2016 05:39 AM

Lucky you have such good runoffs on that track. If you were at one of our local tracks lakeside you'd be in the wall immediately. You so much as touch green there your car is a write off 90% of the time.

Not great for them though....

Edit:

Also interested about the distance to the bump stops on a car with full aero....

DarkSunrise 04-15-2016 07:17 AM

Vorshlag raises some pretty good counter-points here. Basically there's another video showing the driver had a bumpy "off" a few weeks prior and apparently neglected to do even a basic post-event check for cracks on the inner part of his wheels. Also points out the suspension setup appears to be bottoming out, which massively increases the forces absorbed when running the track curbing. Take it with a grain of salt since Vorshlag is a Forgestar vendor (and has used Forgestar wheels on their track builds), but whether you agree or not it's a well-written rebuttal and worth a read.
