Musicians? (Post your Instruments)

A quick search brought a dated thread with not too many posts. I wanna see some instruments from fellow 86 drivers owners (bass guitars don't count Just kidding)

I've been playing guitar for over 10 years, was taught for the first couple years then I stopped taking lessons and went on to teach myself harder stuff (learning bands like ABR, Texas in July, Protest the Hero etc.). Recently I've settled down. Playing a little more John Mayer, Pink Floyd, RHCP type stuff. trying to write some music along with that.

My first guitar was a piece of cardboard with elastic strings.

My second guitar came out of a Peavey Raptor starter pack

My third guitar was an Ibanez RG42DFX
http://media.musiciansfriend.com/is/...00-500x500.jpg
Great guitar, it was neck through with a very fast and thin neck. Very versatile as well.

My fourth guitar was an RGD 320
http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/...20091210101102
Longer scale, kept it in Drop C tuning.

Traded in the last two guitars to get this about a year ago:
Fender Deluxe player's Strat. Made in Mexico but has American Noiseless Pickups. For 800 bucks it was a great deal.

http://i63.tinypic.com/4kags1.jpg

Along with that are my Pearl Target drums, Self taught for about 5 or 6 years now. Maybe more.

I'm in the market, over the summer, to get myself a proper head and cab setup. I was looking at orange but we'll see. I'll most likely bring my guitar to some stores and test out the amps.

I wanna see what some of you guys have.

I'm way to lazy to dig my stuff out of the closet. The whole apartment life killed my playing. I haven't really jammed in 4-5 years. I still fiddle around, though it isn't much fun with headphones. Someday I'll get a house and make a dedicated room. :( It's amzing on how fast your technique drops after not playing the memory is still there but, the dicipline isn't.

Vampyre 04-08-2016 08:00 PM

This is my little music room that I have. 94 black label Tele, 03 Epiphone SG, and an Ibanez AX32, Vox AC50CP2 amp (loud as hell), and the little grey box on the amp is a 1 watt tube amp. I can crank it into the cab of the Vox. I have a couple of pedal kits around that I have built.

Wow nice stuff. I played a Vox at a music store and the warm tone I got from it was unbelievable.

Love the guitars too.

Post a pic of the pedals if you get a chance.

I'm eventually going to move on my own in a condo (still only 22) and I already dread the fact that I'm going to have to get rid of my drums at that stage of my life.

Been playing saxophone since middle school and these day I play mostly by ear. Recently learned how to play guitar, and have both an acoustic and an electric. I know your usual chords and I'm trying to learn scales. Not great yet and probably won't ever be.

Pick it up an hour a day every day, and you'd be surprised how much you'd learn and how great you'd be even after a month of doing that.

DJCarbine 04-08-2016 09:47 PM

Learned on Piano, went on to play the guitar. Had an 80's yamaha SE612 and a Zoom Fire 30 modeling amp. Mostly played ragtime on the piano and got the guitar to play stuff like Dire Straits and Floyd. Also hair metal.

No pics of the guitar, but it had "Trouser Snake" engraved next to a crude drawing of a snake. Looks like the previous owner scratched it in with a knife. Best feature of the guitar by far.

The Les Paul is actually "alpine white" but is 25 years old and has sort of yellowed. It is a common thing with them. My son was pissed (he wants to take it) and accused me of smoking in the house. I haven't in 20 years but he didn't believe me and started searching. Sure enough the white ones all yellowed with age.

Also I was looking at that LTD at a music store in your first picture when I was purchasing a guitar about a year ago. Thing looks nice.

Amps:

Wax it yearly and soft polish. It wont yellow. Seen old creamy white strats from before my parents were born (1960s) with still original color. When i asked how they still so colorful, i was answered with wax and polish.

Which one?

Active pickup one or other one? I love the pot belly one. Has rich les paul sound, but heavy. The black one has a fast neck and thin, so good for light shred. Broke my wrist, so barely getting back to playing.

They are Strats it is not. It was something to do with the coating they used. The new ones don't do it since they put an inhibiter in the varnish. Believe it or not the yellowed ones are more sought after and the last thing I want to do is "fix" it.

I think it was because old Gibson's had some sort of lacquered paint vs the poly that is used today.

I've got a few :)

Ibanez rg1570 prestige with Dimarzio x2n and tonezone pickups (if I remember correctly)
Schecter Blackjack C8
Schecter Hellraiser C7
Epiphone Nighthawk
Kramer Bass
Seagull accoustic 12 string
Yamaha nylon

A LOT of other music gear.

Framus Cobra head + 4cab not pictured.

They all gather dust at the moment.

Nice guitars. I've always wanted a 7 string to play periphery and tesseract's stuff but never got around to it. I was look into Agile 7 strings, their guitars are so nice and surprisingly inexpensive compared to the build quality they put out. Slap a couple BKP in them and you're rolling on a nice beefy tone.

ButeraFRS 04-09-2016 10:12 AM

Also for anyone looking into guitars, check amazon before anything else.

https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00NAVUG0A/...42KT8RYRJA9W1E

They've got some amazing deals from what I've been seeing.

Most likely, All I ever found on the subject was they started using an "additive" in 2003. Could very well have totally changed since then as I do not really follow the tech.

I am very indecisive. Those are probably my 20th pair of pick ups for this guitar. Im always chasing after the "perfect" sound like a damn drug addict. I like these tho. These have a nice growl to them. Not too shabby for some generic Guitar Fetish pick ups.

This is exactly it.

The paints and finishes we have today outlast the old skool lacquered paint used back then by 100 fold, but each have their benefits still. Today mostly urethane, polyurethane, and cellulose based paints are used.

Many purists say that the old skool lacquered paint is a key contributor to achieving the tone that those guitars produce.

Fuck if I know/care tho.

Put any guitar in my hands and ill play it.

I think these are supposed to be imitation Pearly Gates. Im not sure those. I love love the way they sound tho.

In my opinion, they sound WAAAAY more authetic to Randy Rhoads tone(when he was with Ozzy) compared to the factory pick ups.

And here's my go to gal, a Mexican Fender Strat 60th Anniversary Diamond edition. The color, probably my favorite, is Blizzard Pearl. I've been playing drums for about the same length of time, took lessons for a year, but have been self taught since then.

My main 5 is a Dingwall NG-2. I changed the pickguard to blue sparkle and all the hardware to black - bridge is now Solid Brass ABM, tuners now genuine Hipshot Ultralites, etc.

Also has a pink guard for when I'm feeling sassy.

My main 4 is a 1983 P-Bass in Sienna Sunburst.

Here's the whole arsenal. Yamaha AES720, two Fernandes FRBs from the eighties. Also have another P-Bass and an old Yamaha BB series in various states of disrepair.

I currently play bass in a old man band (classic rock with a bunch of old guys) Main bass right now is an epiphone viola bass, second is a Lyons with EMG PJ. This through an Ampeg PFT350 into a 2x10 Ampeg cabinet.

Also play saxophone in an Italian marching band. Use a 1961 buffet SDA tenor. Also own a Buescher tru-tone soprano from the early 20s

What a great collection of guitars!
I'd like to have the same, but as long as my collection is quite modest. I have a bass guitar that I got from my father and a very simple acoustic guitar. In any case, this is already something, I hope soon I'll have a new guitar. Thanks for the photos, very inspiring.

Doesn't ANYONE play an instrument that doesn't require electricity any more? I just saw this thread for the first time, and of course exoected it to be a bit heavy on the guitar side side.....but COME ON!

Yamaha C7 (A real grand piano....no plug required)
Violin (1980 Siloczek regraduation)
Viola (15 3/4"....beautiful sound for slightly small viola)
Trumpets - Mt.Vernon Bach with 43 Elkhart bell, Burbank Benge, Martin Committee, Conn 22B
Flute - Yamaha open hole w/ inline G
Saxophones - Selmer Mark VI alto, Selmer Series II tenor, Selmer Series III soprano w both necks.
Chromatic Harmonicas - Seydel Saxony matte in Orchestra tuning, Suzuki SCX-64, Hohner Super 270 deluxe, and a handul of other vintage Hohner chromatics.

Things that plug in include an Alembic fretless 5-sting, a Fender Rhodes, a Yamaha P120, and Yamaha CS-1X. I've had a bajillion synths over the years, including a huge modular midi rack from back when I was touring.....but I got really sick of that side of music about two decades ago. They were great tools during stages of my development as a musician, to be sure, and I loved the "coolness" factor and the ease with which one could sculpt and craft a sound, but as I matured I came to increasingly respect and yearn for the direct connection between human and sound. Soending years learning to coax a beautiful sound out of an acoustic instrument and communing with it truly moves me.....much more so than twiddling knobs and buying gear ever could and ever will. Not denigrating those who enjoy making music with technology; I was there, in a VERY big way for a long time. Just not there any more.

Bill Evans. Benny Golson. Janos Starker. Nathan Milstein. Ray Drummond. Scott LaFaro. Clifford Brown. Chet Baker. Toots Thielman. James Galway. The Chicago Symphony. Placido Domingo. These folks all touch my soul in a way no electronically reliant music can.

Did I mention Bill Evans? Bill Evans. (The pianist, not the sax player, THE pianist).

I play percussive instruments and sing both leads and harmonies/backing vocals in an open mic jam environment, but I don't really consider myself a musician. It's more just a fun thing to do with a group of musician friends I've made over the years. I've only been paid once out of a tip jar ever in the 100 or so gigs we've done. Definitely not a pro, and haven't done it since the whole covid shit storm began.

I'm one of the individuals in this picture:

Well I did up to about four years ago. What with arthritis, carpal tunnel, pinched nerves and worse I just couldn't do it any longer. I still have about a dozen acoustic guitars though. Most have had mikes and/or pickups added for recording and stage work. Here are a few of my most interesting ones.
First photo was taken in the early 80's. I'm playing an OMI wood body Dobro.
Second is about 8 years ago at Harp Guitar Gathering 11. I'm playing Freda, my custom built Duane Noble Harp Guitar with 6 sub bass strings.
The last photos are of Ruby, a custom build by Andrew White.
I have two other Andrew White customs. You can see them on his site here:
