Fed up with dealership

Let me explain everything start to finish as to what is going on before I get into why I am so pissed off with this dealership (we'll call it dealership1 for now)

Almost 2 months ago I brought my car into dealership1 because I had a very loud whine coming from my trans. When I brought the car to them I showed them the whine in the trans and a flywheel/ throw out bearing rattle that was highly audible at idle. They then took my car and gave me a courtesy vehicle and I was on my way.
The next day rolls around and they explain to me that they can no longer hear the rattle at idle, but can in fact hear the whine in the trans. They then proceed to ask me if I wanted to come down again to identify the rattle with the shop foreman. It was no big deal so I went down there after work and showed them the rattle. The foreman did in fact hear it.
The next day I get a call saying that they need a Toyota representative to come out and check out the car because of the modifications I had done to the vehicle before they do any warranty work. In my mind I was wondering why in the hell do they need to check and see if springs, exhaust, and wheels need to be "checked out". Anyway wasn't a big deal at the time and didn't think about it too much.
So the weekend passes over and the rep showed up on Monday. I got a call later that Monday saying that they will proceed to replace my transmission under warranty.
They ended up replacing my transmission and my throw out bearing.

I have the car for about a week before I bring the car back in to the same dealership1 with a new problem, my shifter vibrates horribly off and on in 5th gear and only in 5th gear whether it be shifting 4th to 5th or 6th to 5th or it just resting in 5th gear. There is a vibration and I've never had it happen before. Anyways brought it back to dealership1 to have them check it out. I went on a test drive with one of the techs and he did say that he noticed it and that they would need the car overnight in order to compare it with another tech's personal FR-S the following morning.
I get a call and they tell me that this is a normal characteristic of the FR-S transmission and I should not be worried. I didn't argue with them, I just went back and picked up my car.

I gave it about roughly 1500 miles driving it that way thinking that maybe the new transmission needed to be broken in. It wasn't getting better so I took it to a local shop who the owner specializes in the twins and I had him drive my car. When he drove it he said "this is definitely not normal, I have never felt this before in any of the FR-S' or BRZ's and I drive around 10 different ones a week. If I were you I'd take it to a different dealership and see what they say."

So that's exactly what I did, I had a free oil&filter change at another dealership (we'll call this dealership2) and while my car was there I asked them to take a look at the vibration in 5th. After the test drive and diagnosis they said that it seems the rear shifter bushing looks to be damaged and to take it back to dealership1. Here's the dealership2 notes; Test drove veh verified body vibration in shifter at 4th to 5th upshift inspect shifter bushing and gromets found rear shifter bushing looks to have been damaged from trans repair return to repairing dealer and repair rear bushing and perform diagnosis.

I call up dealership1 and told them about dealership2's findings. They said to bring it in the next day. I bring the car back to dealership1 to have them finally check out what has been going on with the shifter. I got a call and they said that they inspected the rear shifter bushing and it doesn't look to be damaged but seems to have a bunch of *something* grease. (I can't remember what grease he was talking about.) He then proceeds to tell me that they ordered a new shifter bushing so that they can compare the two. My car has now been at dealership1 for 10 days with no new news about the bushing showing up. They said they don't know what is taking so long but it might be on backorder, "so it might take a couple days, a couple weeks, or even a couple months to show up." I then asked for the part numbers and I called dealership2 back up and asked them if they had those parts. They said that they don't have them on hand but they could order them and have them here in 2 days.

So here I am, my car is basking in the California sun just sitting at a dealership and the longer my car sits there with no work being done to it the more frustrated I am getting with dealership1, and I just don't know what to do..

hypebrz 04-06-2016 10:55 AM

Just take your car back to dealership2 and have them do the work. I don't know how Scion works but with Subie, our car is covered at ANY subaru dealership.

ZionsWrath 04-06-2016 10:59 AM

Sell it and buy a mustang. Totaled. etc.

RIP

ZionsWrath 04-06-2016 11:02 AM

Yea I would call subaru/email subaru directly about the situation. If dealership 2 seems amenable as it does from your post let them continue the work. It's a dealership network no reason you HAVE TO use the same one for repair beginning to end if you are not happy with their work.

zc06_kisstherain 04-06-2016 11:04 AM

I thought something was not going wrong but you just need to wait or start bugging them everyday for progress of your car. since they didnt deny any warranty work i wouldnt worry so much

Maybe I should've mentioned it was Toyota and not Subaru..

Just bring the yo car to dealership 2. They are authorized to do the repair. The trans repair is on file with all the Toyota dealerships and one dealership can request paperwork/repair orders from the other.

fumanchu1 04-06-2016 11:14 AM

buy a subie

Sorry I said subaru since I have a BRZ. but just replace subaru with toyota, same thing.

Your car is under warranty. Had a warranty repair. Repair is not to your satisfaction. You can bring to another dealer.

I was asking my girlfriend basically the same thing yesterday, where if theres a way to call Toyota directly and tell them what is going on rather than having to continue to go through dealership1.

Just go to the website and look for contact information. I had an issue with a subaru dealer. Sent an email and subaru called me and set it straight.

The thing about backorder parts is that there are no ETA. So it's hard to give exact dates of when a part might come in. But atleast they are fixing your problem and not just telling you to go home and fix it out of your own pockets.

Pat 04-06-2016 12:17 PM

Ugh...sorry to hear about your experience. I had a similar (but much worse) experience. When dealership 1 (in my case) replaced my transmission they damaged another part. Dealership 2 was able to diagnose what was damaged after the Subaru field engineer came to look at it. Maybe when they replaced your transmission the tech damaged a part in your car, too.

That is his exact story.... dealership1 is waiting for a "backordered" part to compare what dealership2 says is damaged.

Right but when ordering parts from dealer my experience tells me a part in stock can be delivered in the next shipment, usually next day. Dealrship 2 says they can get it in 2 days that sounds like it is not back ordered. Dealership one seems to be giving run around. :iono:

Clipdat 04-06-2016 12:25 PM

Once again we see that dealer incompetence knows no bounds.

IDK if the part is backordered or not...hence the quoties, I was just helping the person I quoted because it didn't seem like they had read the entire post.

No need to quote me and try to help me out....I understand how parts and dealerships work.

If it were me. Just me.... I would have ordered an aftermarket bushing already and took my car back to dealership2.

Yup. Exactly what is going on basically. I will be calling dealership1 around lunchtime today to see what is the plan because he was supposed to call me yesterday and ended up not calling me so I called them and they said they would call me back.. I ended up calling twice yesterday and both times they said he would call me back..

I have a perrin rear shifter bushing that I never installed because of all my trans problems so far. I do not know if it's that bushing or an actual bushing in the shifter they are referring to.

If it helps they ordered these parts;
SU00300890
SU00300005

From what it looks like that's the rear shifter bushing and a bolt.

I'd halfway be tempted to take your bushing up there and A) figure out what is going on with my car in person and B) tell them that you already got the part they have backordered, can we swap it over and be done yet?

IDK, how it is going so far they'd blame all issues on that part in the future....

go_a_way1 04-06-2016 12:38 PM

I only read the OP but could you see if you can supply the part?? I doubt the bushing will cost much so buy it from dealer 2 and have dealer 1 do the labor

I told the representative I have an aftermarket rear shifter bushing designed for this car as an upgrade from oem. He said that they cannot take or use the part for comparison because it is not a genuine Toyota part.

Another one of issues that i'd like to go over is that why would a shifter vibrate only in one gear? Because I'm tempted to just take it from the dealer and install the bushing myself but I am worried that it won't fix it and then I continue to have more problems.

Here's my thread talking about the rattling in 5th gear.

@MisterSheep youre lucky that theyre trying to make this right for you. I'm pretty sure my dealership would have tried to talk me down out of getting warranty service done.

Well I mean it was the dealership's fault that this happened... why wouldn't they do it under warranty?

justatroll 04-06-2016 01:14 PM

If it was me (I am a major smart ass when pissed off) I would:

Order the new part from Dealership2, and pay out of pocket.
Ask dealership1 AGAIN if they have the part in yet.

When they say NO I would go down there and slam the part on the guy's desk and say "then why the hell could I get the part from the dealer down the street in TWO DAYS!?!"

Then I would demand my car back immediately and take the car to dealership2.

And I sure as hell hope you are driving a loaner from dealer1 all this time or I would be livid.

My latest experience with the dealer was: They had my car to replace the headlight for condensation.
I told them to check the front timing cover for oil leaks because I could smell oil burning and saw smoke from the front of the engine.

They said "Yep the timing chain cover is leaking, we'll fix it!"
So they gave me a loaner and had my car back to me in 2 days (with one of the two days the entire city was shutdown from a snowstorm).

So if my dealer can R&R a front timing chain cover with all associated parts in ONE DAY, I think your dealer should be able to replace a trans bushing in less than a week.

You can see exactly why I am currently fed up with this dealership then right? I am driving a courtesy vehicle but I noticed yesterday it's service required light and CEL came on.. Like wth how do they treat their vehicles?

That's the beauty of rentals, drive them like you stole them.

MisterSheep 04-06-2016 02:48 PM

I'm thinking about calling up the dealership asking them to see if they checked the following items;

Shift Lever Retainer Bushings
Trans mount bushings
Trans mount collar
Trans support mount
and the shifter itself..

If it's none of those I honestly believe it could be the trans..

SlammedSilly 04-06-2016 03:09 PM

sorry to hear about your situation sheep! hopefully you can get everything situated by the end of the week.

but listen i work for a Volvo car dealership in the parts department, and if a part is back ordered, we have a phone number to call to get the availability of the part. they usually tell us 7-10 days from sweden, sometimes the part shows up early, sometimes is shows up the 10th or 11th day.

so tell the dealership1 that you want an eta on the part, and if they give you a bullshit answer, tell them dealership2 would love to work on your car and have the part for you in two days! so tell them if the part isnt at the dealership within 2 days and your car isnt in the shop being fixed the same day. that you will contact a lawyer.... USE THE "L" word, make sure you cause a scene too... best to go in and do all this in person and make them feel like ****heads in front of all the other customers. get loud when you need to!!

good luck man

haha if you met me you would realized I'm actually a pretty shy person and don't like to get flamboyant like that.. ask @finch1750

Anyways I've tried to get ahold of dealership1 and the rep taking care of my case isn't there.. and they said Samantha was taking his place and that she will give me a call back. I called 2 hours later looking for the rep that was supposed to call me back.. but they said Will is supposed to be taking care of the case and he's away from his desk and he should call me back.

I'm getting the worst case of the run-arounds from this dealership and I will make sure to write something about this dealer in the norcal section and make sure other members don't make the same mistake as I did.

With subaru if you are having a issue with the dealer and threaten to call subaru of america that generally gets shit flying quick. Idk how it is in toyota land.

They're probably arrogant assholes who think they're tough shit.

finch1750 04-06-2016 03:25 PM

@mkstersheep Call corporate. Open a case and see why dealership 2 cant do the repair (might be coming from dealership 1 pocket since they fucked up the part though, who knows). Bitch and moan and maybe you get a toyota gift card if they keep screwing around

I would say just install the Perrin but if its something else you dont want aftermarket parts installed by someone else (even if just a stupid bushing) in case more is wrong

jasonojordan 04-06-2016 03:30 PM

On my brz I had one taillight that every spring for about 2 months would get constant condensation in it. Would burn off while I drove next morning would be all foggy again. I bitched and moaned about it since the other side wasn't doing it(this was after a reseal kit and a whole 2nd set of tail lights). Finally called SOA and they said our engineers say they are designed to do that and yada yada basically just to get me to let it go gave me $500 for the dealer that I could spend any way I wanted.
