iPhone/Smart phone mounting
Hey, wasn't able to find a thread on this, so here goes:
I'm looking to mount my iPhone in a place where I can easily see it for things like Waze. Obviously space is pretty limited and I was hoping to have it somewhere where I can also have it plugged into the USB slot for charging. What are some of your solutions for this? Photos? Thanks, -Mike |
Get an air vent mount and place it on the passenger side. Then just get a regular iPhone cable and put it into the USB port. I think (guess?) it should charge and sync with your iPhone. Or you might need that special cable to plug both the USB and AUX ports.

Kensington has a mount on Amazon. Mounts on the windshield or air vent. Around $24.00. One thing I like is I can use my video camera on my IPhone to record if needed. There are some very crazy drivers out there or the truckers that decide to block the merging lanes 5 miles before the merge point. At worst might make good comedy for You Tube. Windshield mount is also great for the GPS App (GPS DRIVE by Motion X ). Hope this helps. Enjoy your car. I love mine.

Something like that to attach directly to the window or somehow mod the bottom with 3M double sided adhesive tape and mount it to a flat surface This one has a clip: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001Q6GU7Y/"]Amazon.com: In Your Face 00200 Flexible Holder for iPhone and Touch - Black: MP3 Players & Accessories[/ame] |
I'm getting a Ram Mount that attaches to the rearview mirror, and I plan to tap into the auto dimming mirror wiring to charge it.

You might be able to get this from Scion:

Any current owners with working solutions? |
Ah, thanks for that. I'll keep checking to see what you guys come up with. :)

I bought a universal vent mount that didn't fit the 86's vents. They were too recessed for it to fit properly, however, I cut the mount up a bit and got it to work. The best part is it rests in a way that the camera faces forward for recording.

i found that just putting it in the little space next to the USB/AUX jack works fine for me... i run my tom-tom app with it there and it seems just fine by me. i'm honestly looking for a good mount myself though so it's a little more easily usable, maybe some way to stick it next to the sound system. if i find anything i'll post it here...

How about this? I ordered one for my ipod. They haven't shipped out yet so I can't say how well it works.

I use velcro to mount 2 phones and a zune.

I wedge it into the dashboard. Having a flexible plastic case helps.

For my old Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 and Honda Element I used mounts from http://www.proclipusa.com/ I liked them a lot. The mounts aren't expensive, but the holder is definitely pricey. But they looked great and didn't seem cheap. ie didn't use suction cups. Each of their mounts are designed for specific vehicles which is why they can look as good as they do. It looks like they don't currently have a solution for our car, but maybe we should reach out to them and see what they can do for us? I'm currently between phones so I'm just tossing my iPhone into the space next to the USB/AUX ports or just leave it in my pocket since I don't use it much for navigation right now.

I had a Skiva Strongmount M1 from Amazon mounted on the passenger side. It came with a A/C vent mount which blocked the CD player, but who uses cd these days. Was good till the ol' GF was pointing something out on the road and swung her hand down on it, breaking the clip where it mounted to the back. It comes with a standard winshield/dash mount, but I refuse to mount it anywhere that will block my eye lines... |

I'm going to check out one of these: http://www.arkon.com/iphone/slimgrip...oor-mount.html
Seems like it's pretty solid and not too huge and bulky. |

No modding of the mount. You have to fully depress the spring loaded clip in order to mount it though. Its a snug fit, when it broke the mount was fully intact, but there was a small clip that broke off that attaches to the "clasp" part.

I use a suction cup mount bought from www.dealextreme.com with it stuck onto the little corner of glass on the driver's side door. Works quite nicely and doesn't block anything while being easy to use and see. Only downside would be plugging it in, you would probably need a longer cord. On the upside they also have those on dealextreme. However shipping will take about a month so don't expect anything to show up quickly from them.

I recently got one of these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...9SIA0AS01S5782 and it works pretty well. The knob at the bottom, that you turn to secure the mount to the CD player, blocks a little bit of the stereo display, but it's not a dealbreaker. It really doesn't matter since music info is displayed on my phone, which is mounted, and I don't need to look at the display on the stock unit. I can take a picture if you need it. |
I have this on my Mazda3 and it works great! I'm looking for something similar for the Scion/Subaru but I haven't been able to find it yet. BTW, for my mount, you still need to buy an extra phone holder to attach to that bracket.

I'm going to be making a custom mount/dock for my iPhone. It will be my first project for my 3D printer when it arrives. Waiting for my printer is almost as bad as waiting for my BRZ was.

If you haven't checked them out before, RAM can mount just about anything just about anywhere... http://www.rammount.com/
I'm thinking an adhesive backed ball mount on the passenger side of the center tunnel with a long arm and the X-Grip to mount my Samsung SIII - http://www.rammount.com/Products/Pho...Default.aspx#/. |

Found a good solution (for now).
Pep Boys actually has a pretty good selection of options, they're all pretty cheap, but they had a Bell Automotive dash/vent mount that works well. I stuck the adhesive to the fake carbon fiber on the dash. Seems pretty solid. The included cradle is spring loaded and can barely fit an iphone. I happened to have a cradle with the same mounting tab from my old car and just swapped it out for the Bell one, so I'm only using the Bell mount. |

Any idea on how this would hold up in a Fujitsu HU? Maybe someone out there with a BRZ has pics? Also, are you using an iphone 4 or 5? |
made up a mount for a smartphone in the airvent, works a treat if the steering wheel is on the right, can operate the phone with both hands on the wheel

If you like the pro-clip, but want to save some cash, you can.
Just get the mount for your phone without the car part. Use 3M automotive double sided tape (the red color one) and attach to the radio surround fascia, had several hot days and no problem on staying put. |
