Toyota 86 vs Scion FR-S: A Visual Comparison W/Poll

I know we already have a few 2017 86 threads, but none with a visual comparison and poll.

Quote:

The Scion brand is officially dead and Toyota has put the last nails on its coffin with the unveiling of the refreshed GT 86 in New York, earlier in the week.

It serves as a replacement for the FR-S and it will be eventually followed by the iA and iM, which will be rebadged as Toyota Yaris iA and Corolla iM, respectively, despite the former being based on the Mazda2 and not its European namesake. In fact, the only model axed along with the brand is the tC.

Having made its transition to Toyota, the rear-wheel drive sports coupe brings a few styling tweaks on both ends, which include updated headlights with LED DRLs and a new look for the bumper that has a wider air intake, along with redesigned taillamps and refreshed rear bumper that incorporates a different diffuser.

The profile is unchanged, apart from the badge on the front fender, which was redesigned and re-positioned. Open the door and you will find a new "Grandlux" material on the instrument panel surround and door trims, which is basically a combination between leather and Alcantara, joined by new seat upholstery with silver stitching. There is also a tweaked steering wheel with integrated controls for the audio system and bigger paddle shifters in the automatic version, but this is where differences stop, as the rest of the cabin remains virtually identical.

Engineers have fiddled with the 2.0-liter four-banger boxer engine, supplied by Subaru and shared with the BRZ, which has gained a minor power bump of 5 HP, to a total of 205 HP and 156 pound-feet (212 Nm) of torque, on the 6-speed manual model, while the 6-speed automatic maintains its 200 HP output.

I voted for the FR-S; maybe because I just don't much like change, maybe because the FR-S looks cleaner/crisper to me.

They put an additional body line on the side? I just noticed this

Either way I still prefer original, much smoother.

New ones looks so try hard doesnt even look that good. They make the front grille wider but it doesn't even function. Look the wider parts is just blocked off.

The rear "diffuser" has extra line looks busy.

The fake vents under the headlight is now flowing in the wrong direction.

:(

This. I'm afraid of change

I couldn't figure out why they screwed up the front bumper on this car, but now I see what they're doing. That weird new nose is aligning the car visually with the FT-1 concept:

https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XiUS9Va3K...on-FR-S-02.jpg
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/fsTLeYtGEdY/maxresdefault.jpg

This way, when the FT-1 comes to market, that sharp nose won't look completely foreign. I suspect the next redesign of the 86 will have an even sharper nose to fill in the gap between this refresh and the FT-1. It will look like a natural evolution of the style they already established.

jegglz 03-28-2016 12:35 PM

The only thing i prefer on the new one is not having stupid chrome back headlights (yay for a simple fix) same goes for the tail lights. I never liked the altezza look on any car though.

FR-S for me. Yay for "aggressiveness".

Makes me wonder if the SF-R will receive the same nose treatment as well.

Somehow I doubt it, but I suspect the final production version of that car will have other visual cues to bring it in line with the other two.

They can't make that car look too much like the 86, because that car is designed to be reminiscent of the old Datsun Sports 1000, Austin Healey Sprite, Triumph TR4, etc. These were small cars with big smiling grills. If they mess with the front end of that car too much, they'll lose that market niche.

Great thread OP :party0030:

The new updated version is just too busy. From the scowling turtle front end to the cluttered fender, it just looks a mess. The back end is an improvement on the new one though.

LOLS2K 03-28-2016 01:03 PM

I went with GT86 for now. I may change my mind once I see the 86 in person. A lot changes from a rendering to reality.

CatScan 03-28-2016 01:05 PM

From an SF-R article:

"It also manages to look sporty and athletic without resorting to the usual crutch of giving it an absurdly aggressive face."

Added: I'd buy an SF-R in a second. SF-R becomes the entry, the 86 moves up to about 33K. What is so hard about keeping the body clean and simple?

I like the visual changes on the new car other than the front bumper, which looks like my little niece just as she's about to cry.

Impureclient 03-28-2016 01:20 PM

Can somebody create another new post with both the cars in one color? It's hard to compare the different colors. Also, another comparing the interiors.
And another post about which one will have cheaper insurance. One that has the rims of the 17' photoshopped with curb rash would be nice so we can see what that will look like too.
Please don't combine any of those, they need to be separate.

fang_gt86 03-28-2016 01:28 PM

Can somebody shop the new wheels, headlights & backlights into old FRS? I bet it's gonna be 3x as sexy! Need to know if it'll worth looking for those '17 partouts lol

RichardsFRS 03-28-2016 01:32 PM

FRS just looks more as it was intended to be, sparse fun, the 86 looks a little luxo to me and that front end? why?

Overall I like the FRS much better. Don't like that fact now the stash is now part of the Toyota brand. Both Subaru and Toyota need to find a way to ditch that ugly thing

raven1231 03-28-2016 01:36 PM

Can the next thread be "if you had to pick one just based on performance"?

ichitaka05 03-28-2016 01:38 PM

Isn't it correct to say "Zenki vs Kouki" instead of FR-S vs 86?

That's what I'm going with (or at least trying to).:party0030:

raven1231 03-28-2016 01:41 PM

I still think the refresh should be called bukkake it's more fitting.

JD001 03-28-2016 01:42 PM

I would pick a BRZ.

FRSBRZGT86FAN 03-28-2016 01:43 PM

At least we know the front bumpers are easily swappable, you could easily buy a 2017 then put some other aftermarket/replacement front bumper on it from 2013-2016. The headlights and side markers all mount the same exact way so I wouldn't doubt that bumper cover is removable like the old one.

jvincent 03-28-2016 01:44 PM

I went for the 86.

I like the new wheels and back more than I dislike the new nose.

Ok, who left the gate unlatched and let this guy slink in?

Train 03-28-2016 01:57 PM

The pictures make the new 86 front design look more bloated than it actually is. It does look much better in videos imo. HOWEVER, I'd still choose the FRS design.

xFury 03-28-2016 02:45 PM

Like the FRS better, but that white stitching looks nice but seems like it will show all the dirtiness lol. Prefer the steering control, but it looks really weird on the 86.

Cole 03-28-2016 02:55 PM

I'd love to have steering wheel buttons. My truck has them, and every now and then while I'm driving the FRS, I'll try and skip a song or turn up the volume with the non existant buttons on the wheel.

That's about the only thing I want that the 86 has.

theparagon 03-28-2016 03:05 PM

I see Toyota is still not capable of color coordinating the lights on the dash and center console. Subaru can make all the lights amber/red. Why can't you, Toyota.

Big D Design 03-28-2016 03:12 PM

I think this.....

I think the new bumper design probably looks a lot better with a license plate. I don't require one in my state of FL, but imagine what the bumper would look like with a plate there. It's going to break up the fish look.

8R6 03-28-2016 03:16 PM

i want the new steering wheel. thats about it.

Chaetagnath 03-28-2016 04:10 PM

If the FR-S had never existed, I would absolutely love the new 86. But, by comparison, the original just looks better.

mazeroni 03-28-2016 05:11 PM

With the FR-S they were trying to pay homage to the 2000gt. Simple, clean, and elegant. They did that and now it is time to move on.

http://i.imgur.com/c2qIc4r.jpg

The FT-1 is on a lot of people's radar after its debut. People still talk about it and want to see it as a Supra successor. When your design studio does something right, you don't ignore it. Adapting a more FT-1-centric design makes sense. While using the current gen FR-S as an interim solution isn't great, the car was due for a refresh and switching brands in the US is a great way to introduce a different design direction.

I agree the 86 is busy and nobody will remember it as the good design, but you do too little and people accuse you of being lazy. Too much is too expensive. So they schlepped together a new design that gets people talking. The future of 86 from a design standpoint looks very good. Just not with this refresh. Until we get Gen 2, well, be happy it even exists because neither Toyota or Subaru really, truly need the car to survive.

NWFRS 03-28-2016 05:57 PM

I refuse to vote in this poll because I'm not a fan of EITHER front bumper treatment. The wheels, bumpers and fender garnishes are all a wash to me. I would buy whichever was cheaper and then do my own thing. As I'm sure the Toyota 86 will cost more than the outgoing FR-S, I'd choose the latter. But the pole isn't about cost, and "neither" isn't an option.

This is one of only a few bumper treatments that I'd have been willing to pay more for upfront, but Toyota never asked me. I feel like both Subaru and Toyota missed the mark on this. Possibly Subaru missed a little less but they still missed...

The only thing I like about the new 86 is the tail lights look a hell of a lot better to the point that I wouldn't even think about getting after market. The other notable feature is that it comes standard with a shark fin antenna.Have to say,I'm sick of looking at that Alfalfa sprout on top of mine.

Teseo 03-28-2016 07:22 PM

Team Zenki!

My only issue with it is: it incorporated what the deal breaker for the BRZ was for me.... a Mustache.

I see the very wide intake is faux on the sides and is still the same width. I don't see this as an issue. That can be cut out cleanly and turned into intakes possibly, fitment depending.
