Transmission won't engage any gears.. Diff/Axle is done.

Having issues, hopefully someone with more knowledge than me can comment. Was in 2nd gear, drug it out to like 5500rpm. Shifted to 3rd and as I engaged 3rd I lost all my gears. I can let the clutch pedal out in any gear and it won't grab, doesn't sound like slipping at all. Had myself towed back to my house by someone and in neutral, as I was being drug, I heard a metal grinding noise.

I don't know if it's the clutch or pressure plate or the trans all together or what is it, where would I start to try and diagnose this?

None of the gears? Not even fifth? Fifth gear couples the input shaft directly to the output. If that doesn't hook up it's either the clutch, or your diff.

jawn 03-25-2016 10:01 PM

Generally speaking, if the pressure plate is bad, your clutch won't fully disengage. If you can shift into gear with the car off, but not with the car on - the pressure plate is likely toast.

This doesn't sound like that. Have you checked for leaks with the slave cylinder?

If I understand your problem correctly - the clutch is not engaging, so the car never goes into gear? Does the clutch pedal have a normal amount of resistance? Can you press the pedal and have a buddy see if anything's leaking under the hood?

There's also a possibility of the center of the clutch failing, which could result in this sort of behavior. The linkages and throwout bearing could also do this, but it would have to be something kind of bizarre on a car this new.

No leaks, I can tell you that. Normal pedal resistance. I'm about to head home now to see if I can get it to engage with it off.

I'm leaning towards clutch/throw-out bearing, if I had to guess.

Mr.ac 03-25-2016 10:15 PM

Clutch is toast. My sister's 2009 Si had the same exact problem. Throw out bearing and one of the springs on the clutch broke out.

So I put the rear wheels in the air, to see if the axle would spin. And it does.

So it could be the diff or axle.

In gear?

DAEMANO 03-25-2016 11:15 PM

Wiggle the axle, if it clunks around, then the CV joint in th axle is toast. A replacement OEM axle $400. Used ones can be found all day on eBay for $100-$175.

Yes. so it engages the clutch but won't spin the wheels. So it's either the diff or axles. Gotta check them in the morning. Too dark now.

See if it will buff out lst. (Stock answer)

If not, on a 2016, surely a warranty claim...Talk with your service writer very nicely. If they say no, gradually get more insistent. Even if it was your fault, still a warranty claim...unless of course you've done major mods to the power train already.

Oh, I see now, looking at your posts....seems you've added something under the hood of the car....well, still worth a try for warranty.

Edit: Sorry this happened, but see here: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...09#post2596609

And by morning you'll figure out what's the weakest link.

He has a supercharger, I'd love to see a dealership warranty that.....they won't if they want to keep their franchise.

Thinking it might be axle.

Anyone have a guide to replace them/tips/plan of attack?

Axle? Doubt it. If there is nothing then you are not getting power to the diff. Does it change tones when you shift and just not move? If an axle the diff should scream like a banshee if it is being powered. Besides the odds against having both axles go at the precisely the same moment are incredible.

I did think it was the trans letting go so I had it in 6th and revved it up and the rear end did squeal, now that you mention it. I'll try it again tomorrow, but in first. Just give it some gas? Wheels won't move at all.

Late night guess...Quite possibly wrong....but the inner cv joint could easily break on just one axle. The inner cv joint most always being the weaker of the cv joints.

Edit: 11:48pm PDT....after reading this about helical and Torsen differentials:

"Locking on throttle but requires both wheels to be on the ground"... from here:

http://www.trak-life.com/basic-intro...erentials-lsd/

So if one axle or cv joint is broken, it's as if the wheel/tire on that side of the car is 'off the ground'

And if the inner cv joint broke, chances are real good... it also tore open that axle boot (rubber).

That was my thought. And per several different shops in the area and friends who broke axles, if one breaks the car is dead to the water. I'll check it in the morning.

Best to check with others in the suspension section of this forum... if axle needs replacement. Not sure, me, what minimal parts of rear suspension need to come off to get outer end of an axle out. Surely most anyone would need at least a 1/2" air impact wrench with proper socket to easily get the axle nut off end of axle. The inner cv joint would surely just pop out of diff with a pry bar. It's typically held in with an exterior snap ring.
Inner cv joint may be available separately, as a part, rather than purchasing entire axle assembly ??

Turns out it was the axle. Driver side. Just picked up a new one from @Pure Automotive and will be putting it back on shortly!

Thanks to everyone who helped!

Capt Spaulding 03-28-2016 11:20 PM

If you can't get the car in the air, arrange a mirror that let's you see the drive shaft. Put it in 5th start the engine and release the clutch. If the drive shaft spins and the wheels don't it's in the rear end. If the DS doesn't spin it's the clutch.

I think he already figured it out; it was a broken axle ...... (post #24) ...... ;)

How dafuq you already break an axle?

Ugh I'm probably next.

As a side note, I hope they didn't cut corners for 2016's axles... I mean I know they're shitty in the first place but that was stupid fast dude.

Usually they brake at the joints. I broken a few sets on my mr2. Usually it's the cage that holds the ball bearings. But it depends.

Glad op found the problem. From the frist few posts I thought it was a dead clutch.

Where were you when I was stuck in NE Philly with a broken axle?! :p Had to make a 2 hour drive to Pure Automotive to pick up a replacement. Minus the 4.5 hour drive, it really was only like a 40 minute change with backyard tools.

And yup, it broke at the outer joint. Grease everywhere... -.-

Now, that reminds me of a back-in-the-day story of the time I was leaving the OSU campus, in Columbus, OH, in rush hour traffic, with my girl friend and her sister.

We were going through a busy intersection in my trusty 1948 Chevrolet, when all of a sudden nothing would work (gears/clutch just nothing working). I figured it was a blown clutch. My girl's sister stuck her head out the window and said, "Roger, your rear wheel is coming off".

I thought, what the heck does she know about it! I jumped out, in heavy honking traffic and sure enough the axle had broken and the wheel was about a foot away from the car.......:confused0068:

So, some folks helped me push it up into this old Pop service station. The old boy said, yep you got a broken axle fer sure. We pushed it off to the side and he said I could leave it there until we got an axle.

So, my girlfriend called her father and he drove 70 miles to pick us up. The next day (Saturday) was cold with snow on the ground, but I went over to this old farm/junk yard and pulled an axle out of a junk car that was sitting in the frozen mud.

I hitched a ride back to Columbus that Sunday night and delivered axil to the old boy, who had the rear end dissembled and informed me that the bad axil had crystalized ....... the OTHER axle was badly bent.

So, next weekend, back to the junkyard to get the axle out of the other side ...... and yes, it was still snowing......:bonk: Took the axle back up to the old boy and he installed them that week.

On Friday, I picked up my car and ask him how much I owed him ..... he asked how much money I had ...... I said $27.50. He asked if I was a student and I said yes ......so he said the bill comes to $20 ..... plus he fill up my gas tank.

Nice people, back-in-the-day ........ :)

The moral of this long story is, that if you have stressed one axle to the breaking point, there is a good chance the other axle is about to break, so replace them both.

I thought the moral was if you go to a junk yard in the snow to pull an axle, pull both sides just in case so you don't have to make a 2nd trip.
