Sounds good, robust.

W2 06-30-2012 11:19 PM

I wish I could hear it at idle...

Furtive 07-01-2012 12:03 AM

Bounce 07-01-2012 12:25 AM

Sounds good, deep and non ricey

igorot 07-01-2012 12:29 AM

I agree, I find it to be the second best behind AF, pending more detailed videos

Edit: Actually third, second would be Agency Power from Vivid racing.

TPO 07-01-2012 12:58 AM

Borla really came through on this one :)

Time of pics and more videos under load.

ImAwesome 07-01-2012 01:49 AM

I hate free revving videos :(

brianbot5000 07-01-2012 02:55 AM

Tips look nice too. Not too freakishly large or fancy - look stock (or, how stock should have looked for North American cars).

Brimford 07-01-2012 03:21 AM

Looks good, I will definitely be looking for more videos of the car actually in action and not free-revving.

Motopythons 07-01-2012 03:24 AM

meh, not feeling it.

Got a little more info for everyone. Borla has installed a muffler from their XR-1 line of mufflers. The muffler uses their patented multi-core technology and is specifically built for this application. Since this muffler is purpose built for the application, vehicle clearance is maintained. The muffler is not in the stock location, it is mounted forward of the rear axle and I'm told results in a 25% weight reduction from the stock exhaust system.

More info about the XR-1 muffler line here: http://borla.com/products/xr-1_racing_exhaust.aspx

I dunno if moving 30lbs to the center of the car is ideal for the back end of these things. They already want to wag the tail! It does sound like auto factory!

I thought I remembered a post on here where someone weighed the factory cat-back at 30-45 lbs, so 25% of that would about 10lbs, not 30. I wouldn't think that would make a huge difference, especially since the first weight reduction all the other Fr-S owners I know are doing is removing the spare tire (a bigger chunk of weight from the rear IMO). I could be wrong though...

I'll let you know if the car is drift happy after I've picked it up and had a chance to enjoy it again.

Don@Accelerated 07-01-2012 12:18 PM

My factory muffler was 30lbs I believe. I'd have to measure it again to be certain. Total weight as I remember it was 48lbs

armythug 07-01-2012 12:32 PM

Sounds better than Auto factory to me and will probably be a lot cheaper. That is the best sounding exhaust I have heard so far. :happy0180:

That makes sense, seeing as how the biggest reduction in mass seems to be the muffler. From what I've seen I'd say it's about half the size of the stock one (if not smaller). So the weight reduction probably comes mostly from the muffler size but it's still probably around 10-14lbs, the rest is just a shift in weight toward the center of the car about 12-18". Maybe a 20lb shift? By no means am I the expert, but I still don't think it will be a huge problem.

Thanks, I agree. The sound is definitely similar to the Auto Factory exhaust, but I don't have any experience to speak to their quality. I will say that I'm not a fan of the exhaust tips that were on the Auto Factory exhaust. I think the tips on the Borla system fit the rear very well and they look, to me, how the factory exhaust should have looked.

xwd 07-01-2012 02:11 PM

Love the sound what is te overall weight of the exhaust?

Only downside to the center muffler is for competition events swapping over to a straight pipe doesn't really save any weight but probably not a big deal for most people.

The weight shift I don't think will have any major effect in the handling. the amount if gas you have in the tank will make a much bigger difference.

BillY2KFRC 07-01-2012 02:53 PM

Love the look and love the sound, one of the best so far. Just curious about the highway drone? In the Corvette world, the XR-1 Borla systems drone like crazy!

I spoke with the person over at Borla that is leading this R&D project and he said that they have performed sound tests at cruising speeds of 45 MPH and 70-80 MPH and have not had any cabin resonance problems (AKA: highway drone). After I have had a chance to enjoy the vehicle again, I will post some more videos.

He also said that the stock exhaust weighed in at 38 Lbs (not sure if this is the muffler only or muffler and piping) and they shaved 10 Lbs off of that weight for the protoype currently on my car.

Hopefully I can make the next meet in SoCal and anyone interested can come take a listen.

Subaruwrxfan 07-02-2012 06:28 PM

Wow, I come back from a weekend vacation to this! Sounds amazing! I love it! Nice big tips too! Finally filling up that cutout!

Mitch 07-04-2012 05:18 AM

I like it! Give me turn-downs, please!! If not, I'll add them myself. That's the exact sound I'm looking for. Just need to hear it under load now!

Max Schnell 07-04-2012 11:49 PM

I noticed the free rev still hits at 101 decibles at certain rpms and not at the peak rev. I would be concerned about vibrations and drone for any aftermarket exhaust. I have never found one to be totally drone free yet.

I have a borla suitcase on my BMW and I cannot fault the built quality, sound or fitment. However, it does vibrate the center console at mild throttle in the lower rpms and drones a little. Hopefully not the case with this one.

Another point for those who own automatics versus stick. Drone seems more of an issue with autos as they tend to hold a slightly lower rpm more often. Most if not all of these exhausts are designed using manual cars in which it is easy to avoid drone prone rpms most of the time. Just my personal observation from past experience. I personally am tired of loud exhausts that vibrates everything in the car and makes me tone deaf.

Brimford 07-07-2012 02:49 PM

Any idea when we will get a video in the car and outside actually driving? I'm pretty excited about this one.

zoomzoomers 07-07-2012 04:08 PM

Looks and sounds good.

Superhatch 07-07-2012 04:31 PM

Sounds good revving, we really need to hear it under load!!

JohnnyP 07-07-2012 07:29 PM

I picked the car up yesterday, very happy with the sound so far. I will try and post some videos tonight after work. Any specific requests?

Outside and inside the cabin take off, from idle RPM all the way to max rpm. Inside a parking garage or tunnel would be cool too =)

A video of the dyno results.. :D.

BMWDavid 07-07-2012 10:33 PM

I'm concerned about the new location of the muffler and not having factory levels of heat insulation in that location.

Hopefully I will have dyno results to post soon, but I wouldn't expect a whole lot from a cat-back alone.

The new muffler actually sits where the "sub-muffler" (Toyota's words, not mine) sat on the stock exhaust. With the amount of airflow you should have down there and the existing heat shielding (look at the gas tank) I don't expect to see any problems. It's a valid concern, but I'm not worried.

Yes, I see that now. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

White64Goat 07-08-2012 12:59 PM

Please do a video with the camera mounted on the rear of the car looking down at the exhaust tip while accelerating/driving. That seems to provide the best sound to use for judging what it really sounds like.

Subaruwrxfan 07-08-2012 03:06 PM

Anxiously awaiting these videos!
