interior room concerns

at just a hair under 6-5 i'm concerned i won't fit in the toyobaru. most of the time my issue fitting in a Japanese sports car is centered around the lack of steering wheel adjustment in that it doesn't clear my knees. would love to have one but i'm not gonna be crampin' it. here's to hoping for the best possible result. :happy0180:

70NYD 03-05-2011 09:10 PM

Im 6'7" and I fit in my rx8 with another 3 full grown adults (6' up) with plenty of room :) I can't comfortably sit in the drivers seat in the sunroof model cus I don't like to lean back too much, but thats just me.. I can't see this being that much smaller internally, all they have to do is make it a 2+2 rather than a 4 seater like the 8

C-Bone 03-05-2011 09:47 PM

2+2s are what they are, compact. A test drive would be any tall persons best bet lol

Dimman 03-05-2011 09:52 PM

I'm 6'3" and the only cars that I had issues with are a second-gen Miata and a Yaris.

In the Miata I had to shuffle steer as the wheel was solid against my legs and had to shrug and slouch with the roof up.

Yaris had to do with the seating angle and my legs not matching up with the gas pedal, caused a cramp in my leg after 20 minutes. Room everywhere else.

5th gen Civic fit me like a glove, with a sunroof.

So I'm hoping the FT86 is ok.

You should really learn to drive stick. You'll have so much fun and you'll never go back.

I got question, b4 i ask, let me say: I do know how to drive stick in another country BUT... question:

In the city( specially NYC), When i parallel park with a stick shift, do I ride the clutch?

( Our parking in the city is really tight, I parked in a space with a gap about an inch)

I see you live in the city too? Your insight might be useful xD

Eh sure, in an automatic car, I usually do not give the car gas. I just let it move itself, unless on a hill.(not neutral lols, you know, when you put it in D(drive) the car pulls itself. Same with Reverse)

So Do i ride the clutch because i do not want to give the car gas when parking in tight spots ( afraid of hitting car in front and back)

also asking because if i dont ride the clutch, i would stall

that's pretty much what i do i live in LA so lots of traffic here too (probably not the same as the cramped streets of NYC but yeah). you cant really make super small adjustments otherwise you'll just stall. so lots of clutch and then release it partially to blip the throttle as needed.

then again i havn't been driving manual all that long so maybe some one with more experience can offer better advice.

lsxiong 03-06-2011 01:39 AM

i'm 5'7", with spiked hair i'm 5'9".

Midship Runabout 03-06-2011 01:42 AM

You just have to get a feel for you car/clutch. Hell I have started out in 2nd with out touching the throttle before. (she didn't really like that haha)

Im 6'1. I'm pretty sure there will be a telescoping and tilting column for you odd size people.

ichitaka05 03-06-2011 01:59 AM

Yeah gotta agree w Dixie. I can control the throttle/speed more than AT for sure w MT

I'm 5'9 so it doesn't bother me. But about the telescoping steering wheel it may not comes as a option in a cheap sports car unless it's part of a premium package and even then it might not come with it.

Midship Runabout 03-06-2011 12:50 PM

^ I'm actually fairly confident it will come standard

NESW20 03-06-2011 01:24 PM

it just takes a little getting used to driving a clutch. now i think i understand a bit better what you're asking. you still use the throttle to reverse, but in parking situations, i never fully engage the clutch. it'll make sense once you purchase your FT86 with a 6 speed and get comfortable driving it.

way to hijack the thread...:threadjacked:

I'm 6'0" 155lbs and I don't see any problems with room. The only people who will have problems in my opinion is people who are over 6'2" and/or 225lbs, and if the latter were serious car enthusiast, they'd lose a few pounds and pick up some performance. :)

At 6'6", I feel your pain. A low roof and non-telescoping steering wheel spells trouble for tall drivers. Because, if the roof is low, we have to do the "seat lean back" which requires a long telescoping steering wheel where you don’t have to do the "hunch forward - crook/side neck - leg jammed between steering wheel and center console". This can be alleviated by having a driver’s seat that can be lowered as much as possible, long seat tracks, and a steering wheel that tilts and telescopes as much as a VW or Mercedes. TOYOTA PLEASE LISTEN!!! TOYOTA, YOU STILL HAVE TIME TO MAKE THESE SMALL CHANGES THAT WILL MEAN THE WORLD TO VERY TALL DRIVERS!!!

Also, having a narrow/small center console and center stack helps a lot!

FT-86GOD 03-06-2011 03:30 PM

U guys have nothing to worry about height wise... Just gives u a perfect excuse to upgrade the drivers seat to a Bride low set race seat made for giants.. thinner bottom cushion and deeper lower seating has u guys sorted.. Im sure if ur gay and wanna go with recaro etc they would do a similar seat......

Problem solved, no need to cry ladies............

First: LOL on the Recaro comment! A+

Second: Tell me more about these Bride seats.

Third: I'm guessing you are short given your "no need to cry ladies" comment. :happy0180:

FT-86GOD 03-06-2011 04:09 PM

Look on nengun.com and on the left side bar click on BRIDE.... Gives some info on them and further info can be googled... Im 5'10..... Most cars these days have adjustable steering wheels... Especially japanese & dont forget its a sports car. Sports cars get these options...

I just hope it comes with electric fold in side mirrors...

Thanks! I'm looking up Bride seats right now. The Bride Cuga - Type Hyper Low seems promissing.

FT-86GOD 03-06-2011 04:34 PM

The Bride Zieg III carbon is the one ill be putting in mine but its fixed so Ill have to get a different adjustable bride one for passager seat though so people can still get in the back. Something like the Stradia II low max carbon...

That was exactly my position when driving my buddy's Miata with the roof up! And I'm 'only' 6'3".

ryun84 03-06-2011 11:18 PM

Get a Recaro pole position seat. Sits much lower to the floor and you can slide it all the way back. Probably perfect for the 6 foot + peeps.

Denwo 03-07-2011 05:37 PM

Im 5'10, 165 lbs never had a problem! But it is a mission getting in the back seat of a 2 door car I can only imagine the pain for 6ft + guys lol.

On a side note.. I would love to see the interior of the MK2 concept!! When will they show us this!:mad0259:

Damn we should start a FT86 basketball team!

I'm 6'2, 198lbs and my last compact car was an Integra. I thought that thing was a tight fit for me. I'm hoping it'll be like the current compact cars and look small yet offer a lot of head and leg room (Mini, xB, Fit etc)

Been loosely following the FT-86 for a couple years now and I guess I'm shocked to see that this car is so small. The other threads here are indicating this car to be about the size of an S2000 or 370Z. If this is correct then this car is going to be a catastrophe for Toyota. Everything I've heard is that this car is going to be a reasonably practical and affordable sports car. If this car really is that small I can't see it having back seats that are worth anything other than an insurance discount. I fully expected this car to have back seats something like a first gen Supra which my brother and I were able to uncomfortably fit in until we were in our teens.

I guess I don't see a point in a car that has 2/3 the performance of a 370Z for 2/3 the price. People who can afford to buy a completely impractical car that only holds 2 people can afford a 370Z or used Elise, etc. I was hoping for a car that would seat 4 (for short trips) and have performance that at least comes close that of a Z. If you are going to make a car for this market segment then you need to go all in. Just look at the RX-8 and how well that car has sold (dismally).

I dont see how a car that hasn't hit production can be scaled at 2/3 the performance of the 370z... but if there was a turbo version that was say 250hpish and given the weight stays around 2700 then the ft86 will have a pretty damn close hp/weight which should let it surprises a few cars.

either way there no point to make assumptions of how the car will be like until there is something to base them off of like shoots of the inside cabin

70NYD 03-07-2011 11:39 PM

The original concept looked like it was fairly roomy

NESW20 03-07-2011 11:41 PM

toyota got the interior room in the SW20 MR2 just right. it doesn't matter how tall you are, just about. i have friends who are 6'4"+ and they're fine in my MR2.

as long as someone my size (5'9" 185lbs) can fit reasonably well in the back seat for 20-30 minutes, i'll have no problem with the rear seat room. i KNOW i won't have a problem fitting in the driver's seat. average height FTW.

If your looking for space and sporty you should be looking at wrxs and lancers. Not here

iff2mastamatt 03-08-2011 12:52 AM

As long as the babes aren't over 6' they'll fit fine in the back.
