Fender Trim Removal
My next modification will be an aesthetics upgrade. I am looking to get rid of those ugly chrome fender trims.
http://www.cars101.com/subaru/brz/br...nder-trim2.jpg Since fender garnishes are, if you ask me, somewhat expensive for what it is, like this one... http://www.86worx.com/media/catalog/.../b09-005_2.jpg I am probably going to get rid of just the chrome trim and install a black on like this one. http://www.cars101.com/subaru/brz/br...nder-trim1.jpg My question is how are these trims removed and how are the replacements place on perfectly so that it does not look slanted. I have heard of using soft fishing line and ripping through the tape, but I didn't find anything on how the placement for these goes after. |
The factory units use both double sided tape and clips. Probably some gentle prying will be just the ticket.
I'll be replacing mine in a couple of months once the weather warms up. |
Shave them off ;)
http://i.imgur.com/AY1hU9k.jpg They are just held on by tape and clips, just a bit of force and they should come off. And the clips should align themselves so you don't really have to worry too much about it being slanted or anything. |

The chrome blade is held on by double sided tape.

To avoid any confusion with the way the previous posters worded their statement:
The chrome is just a cover. There is still a fully shaped piece under. To remove the chrome, simply pry from the edges of the chrome cover itself. To remove the entire panel (fake vent and surround), start from the rear (pointy side) and pull straight out from the fender. There will be about 6? clips. When you get to the front (rounded side), there will be a big patch of double sided tape. Just pull straight out. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...7&d=1399706146 |

No. The chrome is JUST a cover. That shape still exists as paint matched plastic underneath.

If you go prying with no regard, you'll probably damage (scratch, scrape, gouge) the part underneath which is why I tried to go to such a great length to explain it.
If I had no idea and "just pried it off" (cough comment above), I probably would have damaged my garnish. I'm not really sure you can actually replace it. You can just plasti dip it the way it is now. Maybe spray paint the cover and reapply. |

I have no experience with plasti dip, but I wonder if it will look bad, compared to if I order a black one. http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps748086a9.jpg |
And if you're curious, this is what underneath the garnish looks like: 6 clips and double sided tape to remove, if you plan on taking off the whole piece.

I dont think it has been said but you might try using a hair dryer or heat gun to loosen the bond of the bouble sided tape. Just in case that is what is stopping you.

I dipped my emblems black and its been nearly 2 years now. Through tons of washes and never a touch up on the dip. They still look great as if I did it last weekend.
Don't dip them when its windy out. 4 coats of regular black and 2 coats of the clear coat plasti dip. Seals them up stronger and has a bit more shine than just the super matte look of straight plasti dip. 20 bucks and enough dip in the cans to do 4 coats on a wheel if I wanted. But hey if you got 60 bucks to throw away on some super small trim accent because dippin is too hard more power too you :) |

Its a pretty simple piece to wrap in black o_O
If you're worried bout getting the edges perfect, then pull off the chrome piece first, wrap it, and have the edges of the vinyl wrap around the edges of the chrome piece. Then double stick it back on. Way cheaper this way. Or just use actual high gloss spray paint and spray the chrome piece while its off the car. EDIT: the hard part seems to be ripping the actual chrome piece off anyway. Making it black is easy. So up to you if you want to spend $60 on what could be a super cheap DIY. |
anyone still selling any of these chrome trim sets for the fender garnishes/flares/vents???
where can i find a chrome set?? ty ☺️ |
