What gas do you use?

I was wondering what brand of gas everyone is using. I live in California and am using 91 octane Chevron, the highest octane available .

ayau 06-29-2012 11:24 AM

BP - 93 octane.

ducks 06-29-2012 11:26 AM

Shell 93 or Sunoco 93/94

Innova 06-29-2012 11:46 AM

BP, Shell, Speedway. I don't really care as long as it's 93a octane

MannyO 06-29-2012 11:51 AM

Shell 93 V-POWAH!

mezdup 06-29-2012 11:59 AM

Hess 93 only. They always seem to be the cheapest around me and generally don't get too busy where I have to wait to fill.

I find it hard to imagine that there isn't a nearby station with 93 though. You should check http://gasbuddy.com.

very rare to fine 93 up in Maine... 91 usually for me.

Hanzo 06-29-2012 12:03 PM

Shell 93 premium since the first tank.

sho220 06-29-2012 12:03 PM

Usually Wawa's 93...

Shizuma 06-29-2012 12:21 PM

93 octane at whatever station is nearby/cheapest and isn't Exxon Mobile.

Draco-REX 06-29-2012 12:22 PM

Shell or Sunoco, 93 of course.

Chevron 94 - best available in Canada, since first tank.

FT-86GOD 06-29-2012 12:34 PM

Caltex 98 or BP 98

Is that really 98 octane? is that calculated as (r+m)/2?

I know in Vietnam everything says 98 octane, but it's RON (research octane) which only calculates the isooctane, not the heptane... rather than RON+MON/2 (which is how we calculate in US/CAD).

track_warrior 06-29-2012 12:48 PM

Shell 93, im trying out mixing 93 with a bit of ms109 to see what happens.

Its 98RON..

Regular is 91 then there is 95 premium and ultimate is 98.....

normal UL is 95 here in the UK, but find my (performance) cars always run better on 99 octane (Shell V Power, Tesco Momentum99) so will be treating her.

Oriental Life 06-29-2012 12:57 PM

NorCal, only Chevron 91 octane from a set of stations I normally use. Occasionally would use Valero if no Chevron around.

I found Shell gas to be, how do I put it... watery - burns out quick, lesser mpgs on our family car. And I can feel that I'm getting less power out of the engine with Shell too (not BRZ, cause I avoid Shell for those reasons). Maybe I'm paranoid.

76 - actually found that regular gas from them can cause detonation (happened to me on several occasions with rental cars). So, I avoid 76 as well, regardless of grade.

Just read this on another forum:

America and Australia use two different methods for grading their fuel. Australia is RON, America is RON+MON/2.

The highest "octane" fuel readily availible in America is 92 which is equivilent to our 98RON.

So it looks like your 98 is equivalent to the US 92.

Bonburner 06-29-2012 01:04 PM

Cali
91 ARCO, 76, or Shell so far. :/

So it looks like your 98 is equivalent to the US 92.

Conventional 'standard' "Premium Unleaded" petrol in the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia has an octane rating of 95 RON, and in North America it is AKI/RdON/PON 91-93 (RON 96–98). However, higher octane "Super Unleaded" - often formulated with higher quality additives, is usually set at around 98 RON in mainland Europe; but this can vary by market. Most oil/petroleum companies now 'market' their own Super Unleaded petrols under a unique name - and the current name for Shell Super Unleaded fuel is "V-Power". Like most Super Unleaded petrols, V-Power also contains higher concentrations of detergents and other additives to help clean the engine and smooth its operation.

In Australia, from October 2006, Shell and Coles Express re-branded Optimax to V-Power (98 RON). V-Power Racing, the ultra-high performance variant has a rating of 100 RON although Shell have decided to phase out V-Power Racing from 21 July to mid August 2008, instead recommending V-Power[2]. The previously obtainable higher grade V-Power Racing which contained 5% ethanol to boost V-Power's octane rating to 100 RON has now been phased out by Shell due to a "changing market".....

In the United Kingdom and Denmark (where Super Unleaded must be a minimum of 97 RON), V-Power has a rating of 99 RON (whereas V-Powers' predecessor Shell Optimax was rated at 98 RON). There is one other 99 RON fuel available in the UK, namely Tesco MOMENTUM99.

Seems u are correct.....

Calidrifter 06-29-2012 01:30 PM

Costco, Arco, and Thrifty 91. There is a pump by my house with 100 but not sure how I feel about paying $9/gallon.

fenton 06-29-2012 01:33 PM

Using Husky 94, 10% ethanol blend.

What happened to 87 ? Nobody ? Its not like you're harming the engine.

drifter 06-29-2012 01:50 PM

California's highest octane is 91. Should we be using some kinda of octane booster? If so, what is recommended? thanks

Starscream15 06-29-2012 01:56 PM

91 Non-Oxy

Troll? This may not be an Evo's 4g63 but it's still no bueno if the vehicle is tuned to use premium.

They don't work. The best additive I've found over the years of driving was STPs water remover. I saw difference right away on a port injected 2E 2.0L VW/Audi engine. But that was not in US, and the area I lived in had a crappy fuel for injector engines.

finch1750 06-29-2012 02:12 PM

I went with Shell for my first 4-5 fill ups and then have been suing Chevron. Next will be 76. I'll see if any gets better MPG overall than the rest. 91 since I'm in CA btw. I may try Costco too as I read it is from the same refinery as Shell for NorCal.

Yup, I own a Valero and a Beacon and 91 is the highest we go in CA

Griffdawg 06-29-2012 03:01 PM

I been running 87 in my supra for years so I'm sure it will run in frs.

In a pinch 87 should work, I don't think there would be any real harm done... the knock sensor will alert the ECU of any pre-detonation occurring, and the ecu will adjust the timing to compensate.. which will affect your power output, but shouldn't do any real physical harm... course, that assumes the ecu works fast enough to counter the knocking and save your crank, rod and piston bearings and journals as well as your valves and injectors from damage caused by pre-detonation.

ugh.. stay away from that.. why pay premium price, and use ethanol?

Ethanol has 66% of the energy of straight fuel... you're lowering your performance, and/or hurting your fuel economy using ethanol blended fuels...

Some places have 100 in Cali but those are getting rare. I think a lot of places that are 93 octane have ethanol

My1FastFRS 06-29-2012 04:15 PM

91 for the first tank the dealer filled with. Now 93 only a few places left with it in my area too.

but it also depends on how much you push the car and the type of driving you do, no ? more city stop-and-go vs open highways ?

maxx 06-29-2012 09:35 PM

Do your car right, you bought a nice car.

You really should be burning 93 or 91 if thats all you have available and try and avoid ethanol.

Your car will :thanks:

1st tank was Shell 91, 2nd tank Chevron 91, next tank will be Arco 91. Trying them out just to see the difference (if any). Will most probably be sticking with Chevron afterwards though.

Also will be trying putting this in:
