Apparently, the sports car will come standard with a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine available in a range of guises. It's suggested that this powertrain will be based on the 1.6-liter unit of the Renault Clio RS and in base spec, deliver around 250 hp. For customers looking for more performance, a 300 hp variant is on the cards. Both models will have rear-wheel drive as standard as well as a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

To ensure the model weighs as little as possible, aluminum has been used throughout its construction resulting in a 1,100 kg kerb (2,425 lbs) weight.

With the Alfa Romeo 4C and Porsche Cayman in its sights, the sports car market is about to get even more exciting.

Alpine said that the car’s low weight, understood to be around the 1,000kg or 2,200 lbs mark, will help the future production model achieve 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in less than 4.5 seconds, which matches the Alfa Romeo 4C’s time, beats the Porsche Cayman GTS w/Sport Chrono by 0.1 seconds and is only 0.1 sec behind the Porsche Cayman GT4.

The Vision Concept’s exterior design is heavily influenced by the 2015 Alpine Celebration concept, itself echoing the design of the iconic Alpines from the 1960s and 1970, especially the A110 Berlinette, while its interior has a very futuristic vibe to it with a fully digital instrument panel.

Renault’s plans for the reborn Alpine brand, which delivered its last production car, the A610, back in 1995, won’t stop with the production iteration of the Vision, as the French will expand its range with additional models in the near future.

Not a bad thing, imo one of the best looking cars to date

I guess this will compete directly with the Alfa 4c, and assuming its good (something that Renault is are become quite good at now a days), this looks like a kick ass left-field alternative to a Porsche 718 Caymen or BMW M2

now.... will it come to the land of Red, White & Blue?

Renault I think has lost its way in recent years. Clio RS200 Cup was a kicking car, the new one a real lemon.

Very hit or miss in my opinion.

Either the car will be brilliant (like you said the RS200 Cup) or it will fall flat on its face, no middle grand!

Edit: yes Renault Sport is nothing like Renault, but they sadly have to work with what Renault gives them.

However, the engine is expected to receive a bump in displacement to 1.8 liters and will develop approximately 250 horsepower (186 kilowatts) as standard. The range-topping model is expected to generate as much as 300 hp (224 kW).

Chances are the engine’s output will be channeled to the rear axle with help from a seven-speed, dual-clutch gearbox that will likely be the sole offering. Regardless of transmission, we do know for sure the production-ready Alpine will run the sprint to 62 miles (100 kilometers) per hour in less than four and a half seconds.

As far as the interior is concerned, the cockpit is driver-focused and comes with a limited number of buttons and knobs to reduce distractions. The dashboard sends a bit of an Audi TT vibe and you will notice the cabin mixes up leather, aluminum, and carbon fiber. Two bucket seats with harnesses boost the cabin’s appeal and there’s also a Sport mode which upon activation should make the vehicle more responsive and agile.

An official introduction of the production car will take place before the end of 2016 and the model is slated to go on sale in the second quarter of 2017. If the Alpine-branded sports car will be a success, other models will be launched in the following years, including an SUV.

It's much too early to say if such a model will ever materialize, but if it does, it would certainly spice up the market.

Its a cool looking car, but the tiny windows vs body proportions are killing it for me... It does not have that "low slung" feeling, maybe its just the angles of existing pictures.

You are right the car does not look low slung at all. It's like being surrounded by the Great Wall of China. Reminds me of the Audi TT.

The world is always for the better when another "light-weight" mid engine sports car is born.

For me (assuming it's brought to the US) unless it's reasonably priced then the 4 cylinder engine is a non-starter. Reasonably priced being roughly $40k (definition varying greatly depending on car's weight).

If this actually gets built and sold in the US, id be extremely excited. It will likely be a direct competitor (successor?) to the 4C. Successor because the 4c is done after 2017 unless they figure out how to comply with curtain airbag laws.

That being said, mid 50k base and 2400-2500lbs with a turbo 4 is my best guess.

The Alpine seems to have a nicer interior, so it may be even more expensive/heavier

Nope, not a fan. Don't like the angry bull flared nostrils in the front, the droppy nose, the way the front recesses look from the side, or pretty much anything happening behind the front door.

The currently available specs seem OK though. Probably means they'll sell a lot of them, just not to me.

Combined with the turbocharged 1.8-litre unit that makes 247hp and 236 lb-ft (320Nm) of peak torque, the new Alpine gets a really exciting power-to-weight ratio of 231hp/tonne, enabling it to accelerate from zero to 62mph (100km/h) in 4.5 seconds and top out at an electronically limited 155mph (250km/h).

The engine is paired to a Getrag seven-speed wet-clutch DCT ‘box, with gear ratios specifically tailored for the A110’s needs. There are three driver modes (Normal, Sport, Track) which adapt the engine, the gearbox, the steering, the ESC threshold, the exhaust note and the driver display according to the selected setting.

Alpine has also worked hard on providing the new A110 with optimized aerodynamics, including a completely flat floor and a working rear diffuser, combining low drag with real downforce. The A110’s Cx value is just 0.32, one of the lowest in the sports car segment.

The lightweight chassis employs double wishbones for the suspension front and rear while the all-aluminum brake calipers were developed by Brembo. Additionally the rear braking system features an integrated parking brake actuator, a world first, saving this way 2.5kg off the total weight of the car. The lightweight 18-inch forged aluminum wheels were provided by Otto Fuchs while Sabelt developed the one-piece bucket seats that weigh just 13.1kg each.

The Alpine A110 will hit the market late this year, initially in its limited Premiere Edition, with only 1,955 cars planned for production. If you haven’t already ordered one, then you’re in bad luck as Alpine says that all left-hand drive examples are already spoken for, with only a small number of right-hand drive models remaining available in the UK. Reservations for the Japanese market will open in the coming weeks.

My question is why wouldn't Renault/Nissan co-develop this alpine sport with the next generation Z car to save R&D money? We all know that a new Z concept is confirmed for Tokyo this year and that Nissan has previously hinted that the next gen could be smaller and lighter. I wouldn't be surprised to see a re-skinned version of this as the new Z concept. It would piss purists off with no manual and turbo 4 but Goshn's all about cost savings and profit margin.

True, I almost forgot Nissan acquired them but I think Mitsu's gone all in on SUVs. They just used their most logical nameplate, eclipse, on a crossover so I don't see them coming out with a sports car concept too. Unless they bring back the 3000GT/GTO but I don't see that happening unfortunately.
