Let's see your computer setup!

I want to see what everyone here is using to browse FT86Club :D Doesn't matter if you have a prebuilt, PC/MAC, gaming rig, etc. I'll start it off.

DadHawk Approved, DadHawk Want! :happy0180:

What I don't have in horsepower I make up in quantity. This is the primary "computer room" in our house, please pardon the mess, I'm in the process of "cleaning" I swear (from left to right):

  1. My primary computer (Dell XPS8300 with an ATI/ASUS 7870 Video card used 99.9% of the time by me for all tasks. Besides forum surfing, used for gaming, video editing, CAD, and general goofing off.
  2. Work provided laptop (Levnovo T420) connected via docking station and KVM to the middle monitor of my primary computer.
  3. (On the wooden cart, but can't see) ClearOS/Linux firewall and web server, separate 4G NAS, all networking switching for the house)
  4. Dell XPS 9200 used primarily by the musicians in the house for music and video editing and recording. Also used as a second station for gaming LAN parties on occasion.
  5. (right of printer) home-grown I7 system that has a direct lineage to the first computer I home-built in the mid 80's. Used for 3rd station LAN gaming, more music editing, homework and such by the Hawklings.
Let's not talk about what's in the rest of the house but last count I had a more than 25 IP leases on my DHCP server.

Giccin 06-29-2012 01:41 AM

Wow that is AWESOME. What kind of material did you use for your desk to hold the tower? I'm worried it'll get too hot. D:

Edit: What kind of liquid cooling is that. o_O

|-Goku-| 06-29-2012 01:46 AM

It's 3/4 blonde plywood. I have fans on the side that pull air through where the motherboard is. Plus it's water cooled. My 3930 runs at around 50c at full load. And everything is all on one loop.

I'm one person and have 7 DHCP leases and 6 hosts with A records. Having 25 leases for a family shouldn't be that hard :D

Is the water cooling self built or was it bought?

I was in the process of building one but other things came to mind and tools were not handy.

(What my objectives in my desk tower was)
Heat, mobility (open and install parts), liquid cooling, Wiring (all directing in 1-2 tubes to the monitor and power outlets, air flow, easiness to clean and fan location.

I would like to say yours looks crazy neat! Was it just some random desk you bought and cut through or was it built from scratch?

It's not a self contained water cooling kit. It's a custom watercooling kit with an XSPC Raystorm CPU Block, XSPC RX360 Radiator, 2x GTX 480 waterblocks, and the EK Reservoir

True. We have about the same ratio since there are only 3 in my household right now.

One-off, but I still have the sketchup file with measurements. Custom made for me, though. I advice to finda comfortable seat and measure your optimal foot and elbow distances from there. I can spend countless hours in mine with no strain. The seat is from my Mazda 323GTR, and I measured the pedal position and seat height from that since it fit me perfectly. Then it was just a matter of getting the screens as close as possible and the rest is set from there.

Thanks for the info. It looks great! Shoot me a PM if you would be willing to share the sketchup files, but in any case, two thumbs up on this one!

heres mine. didnt want to spend the money on water cooling, even though it would have been much cooler (pun intended). this also took a good 15mins away from my study time. :bonk:

I have a DAW that plays games. The whole thing is pretty compact. Even though it's a Q9550 it runs really really good.

I do like the OP's built in computer in the desk a lot though.

Hype 06-30-2012 09:22 PM

It is a bad picture. And you can not see the surround sound system. I still need a better monitor.

Nice monitors! NT1As? I have NT5 with omni capsules, for piano recording. Can't beat an omni for that.

Thanks! I have a couple Studio Projects omnis I use for drums overhead or ambient room mics.

The nt1a is a pretty versitile mic, I like it!

I'm thinking of buying a new laptop, was considering 2 in 1 from Dell or HP however as I am planning to run some drawing packages I noted that the graphics cards are considered insufficient for the software...

So reverted to standard laptop 15inch, but have a dilemma, Intel i7 6 core processor or i9 8 core with 16GB or 32GB RAM. Both come with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 TI 4GM graphics card...

soundman98 02-27-2021 09:26 AM

Go as big as you can afford. The faster the processor, and more memory, the longer it'll last before it's outdated and slows down

How did you find this thread?!?

Also agree. get more than you think you need.

I wasn't sure that my post warranted a new thread, I thought that someone must have kick-started something similar.. A very quick search and bingo!!

I don't want to go crazy on the price so was doing some man maths, i7 with 32GB RAM or i9 with 16GB RAM. My thinking being that the bigger RAM will give the i7 an easier time..

No, at least not yet. I've been playing with MS Flight Sim with the Quest headset to decide if I want to build the rig around that rather than monitors. Ultimately I think I'll end up setting it up for either. The VR is pretty nice and really does put you in the plane, but you still have to have the controls.

an i7 is probably fine, i9 is a little overkill for most stuff right now except trying to run the latest-greatest-games at ultra high settings.

memory, graphics, and hard drive speed(should have an ssd--preferably an m.2, or msata) are going to be the biggest items that will determine the performance of the computer, as well as how long it's going to last.

something to keep in mind is upgradability. you could get 16gb now, and as long as the laptop supports more, could upgrade the memory later.

but graphics, get the absolute biggest/best you can get, as that's never upgradable in laptops, and will slow things down as time goes on.

Currently, a Dell XPS 15 (9500), i7 (6 core), 32GB RAM, 1TB hard drive, with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650Ti (4GB) is sitting in my basket. I keep flip-flopping between this and an i9 with 16GB RAM. Choices, choices..

I'm liking what you are saying, however I can't get a bigger graphics card unless I go for a gaming laptop. The mad keyboard colours and other silly aesthetics aimed at gamers puts me off the gaming laptop..

Have you considered upgrading to a Dell Precision?
