FRS front grill modification
So I like the look of some 86's without the front grill, but hate the look of the styrofoam painted or stock crash bar painted. So I'm wondering if anyone has any pictures of the front grill cut out below the solid section that covers the styrofoam/crash bar?
Poor photo shop example of my car to illustrate what I mean http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...psih9jkptu.jpg |
An alternative to painting the foam or crash bar would be to swap out the crash bar for an aftermarket one (such as the beatrush option). Obviously this isn't as safe as the OE bar but racecar. They are more narrow so you can't see it from the grill area

You could also just switch out the entire grill for some kind of wire mesh from the home improvement store to switch up the look. I think the FRS looks good with the open mouth regardless of what it's filled with |

OP...I cut off and dremeled the tabs off the bumper that the grille mounts to as I did not plan on re-installing it. As long as you don't do that you could always go back if you don't like how it looks. __________________________________________ projekt zeal86 build zeal.eightsix Facebook Instagram | zeal.eightsix |

Use it as an excuse to go turbo. Can't go wrong with a polished or anodized black (what I will be using) FMIC...

You don't even have to powder coat... I did because I was having some other things coated so I just added the brackets... you could just use duplicolor metal cast paints... duplicolor has many colors avaliable...this paint works pretty well at mimicking an anodized finish. Check it out. Heres a cheaper alternative to the Beatrush crash bar that I just ordered. http://www.enjukuracing.com/products...scion-frs.html Plan on giving it a shot of red for some extra bumper opening sweg for anyone that cares to look. |
Finally found someone who has the grill modified like I was thinking of doing. Since I have fogs now I think the leftover honeycomb would look out of place (IMO). Won't be doing it anymore

Beautiful work Zeal! Any chance you could do me a huge favor and get 2 quick measurements? The distance between those pins on the Beatrush bar and the depth from the driver side pin to where the Beatrush meets the frame? I'm planning to fabricate my own and curious on material dimensions before pulling the car apart. Thanks! |

That's actually a good deal compared to the Beatrush if it's going to be hidden and actually gives me great direction, thanks. The only concern would be that you don't have mounting location for the plastic air dam below the snorkel. I forget the review (maybe Perrin?) but they said without that the air turbulence near the snorkel actually robbed performance from a NA twin. |

Thank you, much appreciated! And I just got a Dunkin Donuts visual of... 'Time to polish the aluminum...' :D |

"The next test was removing the plastic air diverter which rests between the fresh air scoop and the lower portion of the bumper. This part is installed to help block some of the air from blowing up and around the radiator. With the diverter removed, there was a nice steady noticeable amount of air flow coming from the scoop at 1.5MPH. This sounds like it would be a great way to make our intake system get a little more flow and cool air, or would it… After testing this on the road, we found this was a really bad idea. The added pressure and airflow while driving at 45MPH or more would cause the car to run poorly and actually die if you push in the clutch! So the plastic diverter got re-installed and the PERRIN intake would be designed around utilizing this part." |

Btw, a Dremel will work just fine to grind down the tabs... what also works well and provides a lot of control and a clean cut are flush cutters. I have used both methods...how much material I plan on eliminating determines my method. Dremeling is obviously better for grinding out a curve. __________________________________________ projekt zeal86 build zeal.eightsix Facebook Instagram | zeal.eightsix |
