Nexus 7 Tablet

With Nexus 7 coming in at $199, anyone thought of mounting one of these 7" tablets to dash on some sort of swivel mount?

kmbkk 06-28-2012 02:19 PM

You may be able to mount it in the stock stereo location, with some fabrication required of course.

Get a cheap ODBII bluetooth adaptor, an air vent mount, the torque app for Android and this tablet you should have an extra set of gauge to display information about your car.

That....would be awesome. Just another reason to pick one of these up.

I have a Samsung 7" tablet. Been designing a way to incorporate that to the right of the stereo in the trim panel (limited BRZ). My latest thought would be to fiberglass up a cover to the existing stock panel. Cut an opening in the stock panel, insert the tablet, cover it with the fiberglass, bluetooth obdii with guages. Permanent install.

Hmmm...

neutron256 06-28-2012 05:33 PM

I just found a great deal on a Dell Streak 7 and ordered it.. I was a little annoyed when I saw that the Nexus 7 was announced.

Planning on a mount for it along with with the OBDlink MX Bluetooth adapter. Great way to get additional data, and with the right software you can make videos with embedded gps and engine data.

GremlinGSP 06-28-2012 06:15 PM

you would think as long as android and the iphone have been out there would be decent headunits that work with them. Been real tempted to get a decent cheap tablet to use and control the car entertainment system instead of one of the more expensive dvd options.

Since you already have a GPS and a decent screen on your HU, doing so just remove what you already have with not much value. I would simply get a air vent (or other means) to mount your tablet quickly and easily and get the ODBII reader and be done with it. Less fuss.

That's exactly what I did in my Dodge Magnum I had before the BRZ, was thinking about putting the same setup in the BRZ but atm I think i'm going to wait for the clarion mirage android headunit to come out.

Only thing that worries me is how far away it might be. (I don't own an 86 yet and I don't recall how bad the reach is).

Is it easy to pop off that panel?

xcelir8brz 07-16-2012 10:09 AM

A good install job is all it takes. Easy to remove panel.

I've been looking for a non-permanent way to mount my tablet and was afraid the adhesive might damage the fake leather :bellyroll:

What sold me on the that mount was that the suction cup was backed with a low tack adhesive. That combination means that you can mount it on slightly contoured or slightly textured surfaces with out the mounting disk. Just make sure you clean the surface with IPA and you should be good.

Its been solid as a rock so far, the only time it came loose is when i had parked my car in the sun all day and the adhesive got all hot and the suction cup came off. I usually park in a structure or in the garage and when its covered there has been no issues.

Here is a video review of basically the same mount except this is for the larger 10" version, everything else is the same though

Down below is the link for the 7" version the 750 from Amazon which is Prime eligible. They are going quick though and are only down to 5 as of this posting

This one does NOT have any charging ports, or LED lights though, thats the 800 which is sold out.

I was going to do exactly this!! With Torque app and everything. Gonna get this for Boost gauge, AFR, etc :)

Thanks! I just ordered the 900 to fit my Asus Transformer! I've spent so much money on toys for my car already.

CheesusCrust 08-01-2012 04:40 PM

How hard would it be to put it on the FRS? How would the audio controls work?

shinjiro n 08-01-2012 04:43 PM

I picked one up last week and mounted in front of the stock head unit using a mount I got from beatsonic, works great!

ScanTool OBDlink MX. It's pricey but non better for a Bluetooth OBD2 adaptor.

The developer of Torque has a nice breakdown of compatable adapters.

I just looked at this one, seems like a hell of a good piece. Fast data and it's easy to stash away.

Nice im going to have to try this. Im getting a Nexus 7 soon from work HEHEHE =]

I have the ELM327 bluetooth adapter. Works perfectly with the torque app on my old android phone/data logging workhorse.

How fast are the data reads? Like if you rev your engine, how fast does it register? I'm looking for the fastest registering bluetooth adapter possible. Combined with the Nexus 7 and it's 8 core GPU and Jelly Bean, it should be hopefully close to real time.

It's the one I went with. I love it, much better then others I've seen very quick reads, and smooth data display for the most part even if smoothing is turned off in the app.

I also really like that is very compact and has a power saving mode so you can leave it plugged in all the time and not have to worry about draining your battery.

It is expensive (about the same price as a tablet) but I figured it's better to get the one I know is going to work, rather then risk wasting money on something that might work.

I just wish OBDII Bluetooth adapters would work with iPhone. The wifi system they use is crap.

Mine had a bit of lag, but not much. Depended on where I had the phone situated - as my OBDII port is in my trunk.... with a couple firewalls and a motor in between. With it plugged in to the port in the cabin of the FRS/BRZ it should read pretty seamlessly. I was getting smooth revs, speedometer, short term and long term fuel trims, etc. Never can have too much data!

Anyone know if you can connect multiple bluetooth devices to the N7?

I am considering the tablet route simply because of the versatility of the android OS but would prefer to not have it leech off the cellphone all of the time.

Nexus 7 and most other android phones have a GPS antenna built in, so you don't need that thing. Just get Sygic or cache the google maps, and you don't need anything else.

Unless you want to sync to connect to an OBDII adaptor and your radio at the same time.

Mcdj18 08-08-2012 01:38 AM

I'll be doing this when the iPad Mini launches in a couple months. Maybe even build in into the dash :D

Quite possibly. Just good to know the limitations of the setup.

Id wind up not using google maps but another third party Nav. Simply so you dont have to preemptively cache.

CryptiK 08-08-2012 08:53 AM

Im getting one of these to install in the dash. It will take a bit of work so I hope someone does it before me. Main thing is having it hooked up over a constant power supply since the music can be just streamed over Bluetooth. However would it be possible to have 2 things running of the tablets bluetooth at once? Eg the Torque app and music streaming.

for now i dont think so
While i was doing the stage1flash test for visconti i had my phone running the torque app. Whenever the torque app connected my bluetooth would disconnect from the radio. Not sure if there is a way around this yet

The only way around this is to buy another device. My Galaxy Nexus runs my Bluetooth audio and hands free phone and my Nexus 7 will run the torque app.
