Cracked the plastic on the underside of car - replace or leave it?

http://i.imgur.com/bReEtOg.jpg

The arrow pointed in red is where the crack is on my car (this isn't my car). I'm pretty sure I did this when I accidentally ran over a chunk of ice a couple weeks ago. Im not even sure what that plastic part is covering, but is this something I should have replaced or leave it alone as long as it's not affecting anything?

stevesnj 02-03-2016 08:50 PM

I d repair it temporarily for the winter and look for a spare in the classifieds. A new one may not be expensive at the dealer.

Do you know what this part is called?

FR-Sky 02-03-2016 09:09 PM

Lower Bumper cover. It's around $30 from the dealer. Check for missing mounting hardware

Part # SU00304308

Cheapest price I could find it $25 not including shipping, also it serves the purpose of allowing the bumper to mount to it:

I am gonna be the guy that would say "screw it if it isn't causing an issue I will leave like that".

After looking around a little more, i'm becoming more convinced it's actually the "Radiator Support Splash Shield Under cover".. $30 seems wayyyy too cheap for a piece of plastic this large (it pretty much extends the width of the car as far as I can tell, and is only one piece). The piece you mentioned is called the "Splash shield" but it seems more like an under cover. The part I am referring to is Part # SU00301383 and costs $120 :confused0068: which seems more likely. Hopefully I am wrong.

I bet mine is beat to crap under there but as long as the bumper isn't flapping around I am fine with that.

And if it starts flapping around, the Good Lord gave us duct tape and zip ties.

ToySub1946 02-03-2016 09:57 PM

Oh shit that's nothing.

You should see my aluminum rock scraper which is behind that piece. It's hole for oil draining got cut open way further by a big rock, and dented the oil pan. Not too easy to cut open a sheet of aluminum but I can do it, no problem. That aluminum piece about $135.

You don't even wanna see the underside of my front bumper, that's cut open as well.

It's all about fun. These cars are are meant for pretending to 4wd. Maybe you were unaware of that. Dirt roads with deep ruts, no problem. Big rocks, not a problem.

I've bought parts from AutoNation Toyota in South Austin Texas. Don't currently have the link. They do discount parts from retail. And have a good list of tech illustrations of parts. Their parts person, for internet sales, works outside of the Dealership, does not always answer his phone, but you can leave a message, and I had no problem returning a part which was damaged in shipping via UPS.

redlined600 02-03-2016 10:16 PM

I'd like to know for sure as well since mine is also busted up.

On parts.com (which I've had great luck with) they list 1 part for SU00304308 @ $22.70

Other sites list multiple parts when looking at the mirco fiche. Can anyone confirm.

fwiw I guarantee mine is in worse shape and I just zip-tied to together, holds up fine even at track days. That said I'd like to get a new one that is one piece.

You may be fine in California but here in the salt belt is a different story. Toyota or Subaru meant for whatever is being covered to remain covered and I don't want no salt slush getting all up in there.

@lupindub ....... sorry to be late to your party.

I agree with jawn, it looks to be a job for duct tape.

Open up a beer, clean the area with alcohol, cut a piece of black duct tape, rounding off the corners, ...... and stick it on there.

Finish the beer.

Well, ya, @Tcoat, I was thinking along those lines until I stuck my head under there to check that panel. It's about as thick as a match cover. I don't think there is enough substance for a screw to get hold of.

That would have been good back in the old days, when cars were made out of stuff other than plastic.

Maybe plumbers tape and pop rivets would be better, if the duck tape doesn't stay on ....... :D

dnieves 02-03-2016 11:38 PM

I'd use some epoxy, scrap plastic the length of the crack and patch it from behind until the winter is over the replace the part for $22 (even cheaper at a junk yard).

There is a much more robust piece that is this more expensive piece instead of the part you show in the picture. You need to pull the cover off to make sure the structural $120 piece you list above is not broken. You will gain clarification of what you actually need too. I am confident yours is the cheaper part. The cheaper part covers the more expensive part. If your outer piece of trash plastic piece is broken, it will be cheap. If the covered thicker and gusseted piece of crap structural plastic is broken- it will be expensive.

Ashikabi 02-03-2016 11:57 PM

Rivet the duct tape. From both sides. Maybe some JB weld too. Jkjk. Just replace it. Don't be a savage

Ah i'm pretty sure you're right about that. It seems to be double stacked looking at this pic I just pulled up.

@stevesnj <- It probably is the $30 piece like you said earlier in this thread!

It's gonna get up in there no matter what. I've always debated whether or not it's better to leave those dang covers off and just rinse of the underside of my cars frequently here in Salt City America (Syracuse), rather than have those plastic pans shield the bottom from fresh water washes. OR.. is it better to just leave the salt all crusted on all winter long, rather than drive it deeper with the pressure from washing it?

The answer is... it doesn't matter. Salt WILL eventually eat your car. Just drive the thing and enjoy it. If you have a car you want to last forever, don't drive it in salt. Buy another car for that.

Ya takes yer choices.

FFS it's a piece of plastic... know what we call those around here? Wee parts. Why wee parts? because you grab them, remove them and toss them away (and they go weee into the night).

Seriously that thing was beat to shit on my is300 I just removed it and tossed it... nothing bad ever happened and that was 3 years ago.

From what I can tell from the drawing and pics it is a cover over a cover. It would stay broke until it caused other issues, fell off or I "wee'd" it if it was me.

So much animosity towards tape. You need to get laid bro

gravitylover 02-05-2016 09:42 AM

Could be, who doesn't need that? I just have a hard time with letting ignorance go because "everybody does it."

But... duck tape has become the norm so much that there is an actual brand(and it's actually really good tape) making it technically correct. Once things are used widely enough they are accepted by the academic community as "real and proper". It's only a matter of time before DUCK tape is officially what it's called assuming it hasn't already
