Wheel Directory: Gram Lights 57Maximum 18x8.5 +45

http://www.darrendriven.com/ft86/title.png

This last weekend I was able to do a test fit of a set of wheels and tires I had picked up a few months ago from a friend that was parting out his STI. They are Rays Gram Light 57 Maximums in 18x8.5" with a +45 offset running 245/40/18 BFG R1's.

I put about 30 miles on the setup and only experienced slight rubbing when I had the wheel turned all the way to the right driving in tight circles (this didn't happen when turning left). The car is still on stock suspension and I think this combo might rub the fender if lowered since the tires stick out a little ways from the fender. Also, I think a +42 or 40 offset would be better for this combo of width and tire. I'm planning on refinishing the wheels, since several have curb rash, and going with a 225/40/18 or a 235/40/18 street tire when I get back from a TDY in August.

Meaty. I like the look.

DrDuquette 06-28-2012 12:27 PM

They look bald?

Nice wheels!!!
1/2-1" inch drop and smaller series tires whould make them Beautiful!!

Jdogg180 06-28-2012 01:20 PM

They're BFG R1 DOT R-Comps so yeah they are essentially slicks. Used to have those wheels on my 180sx. Love em dude!!!

jimbobrand 06-28-2012 02:35 PM

Yeah, they only have a couple grooves cut into the tread so they can be DOT legal. Thanks guys.

Eric@GetYourWheels 06-28-2012 02:42 PM

If you run a +42 or +40 this will push the wheel out further than the +45 you have now.

DrDuquette 06-28-2012 03:33 PM

Explanation granted...

I know. The tire wasn't rubbing on the fender.

I have no idea but I know that I wouldn't want to do it. I was just test fitting the tires and wheels since they are at my parent's house 500 miles away from me while I was visiting last weekend. I still need to figure out what tires I'm going to run on the street and get started on the refinishing work for the curbrash.

That's about as close as I can get for just over a month. The wheels are 500 miles away and I'll be in Florida till the first part of August.

Maybe someday but I'm enjoying not tearing up my front bumper on curbs or parking barriers.

Exhaust 07-02-2012 10:35 PM

Those look like they would be a lot of fun in a closed course :)

jimbobrand 07-02-2012 11:25 PM

From the few miles I got to drive them on the street, I'd say you're right.

sw20kosh 07-24-2012 03:59 AM

WHen you say they had some rubbing issues and you recommend +42 or +40, do you mean that:

1. The problem is in the front?
2. The rubbing is on the spring coil/strut and not the fender?

I believe he meant the tires are rubbing inside the fender linings when he turns right.

The 245/40/18 R-comps tires he has now maybe much wider and slightly taller than factory/OEM wheels/tires setup.

Why would you want a lower offset if
a) you think it's going to rub the fender (from inside or outside? its not clear)
and
b) the tire pokes a bit already

since a lower offset on the same width wheel is only going to stick out more.

From what I have seen, your fitment should actually be spot on, and maybe a small spacer in the back would be perfect.

But you have to provide us with is the shot from the rear since we can't go on whats been posted. Do it wen you get back.

It's likely that you WONT rub if you lower it. Actually it'll probably make them fit better, if anything.

That being said, they look really good on your car. If you don't want em, I'll take em...

jimbobrand 07-24-2012 07:52 PM

It currently doesn't rub the fender with stock ride height (but would if lowered) but seems to rub the suspension on full right lock when driving in a circle (also it doesn't rub much). A 42 or 40 offset might work better with the current 245/40/18 R compounds at stock ride height on the front but the 45 offset wheels will be better overall when I go to a street tire of either 235/40 or 245/40/18 and lowered. The R1's are only temporary and came with the wheels so I could test fit them on the car. The wheels and tires are in another state at the moment until I have the time and cash to get some street tires and refinish the curbing on a couple of the wheels.

jimbobrand 07-24-2012 07:54 PM

Also, as stated, it only rubs the suspension in the front. The rear has tons of room.

A couple new pics with the Gram Lights w/ 235/40/18 Hankook Ventus Evo 12 tires:

The new tire combo has absolutely no rubbing and doesn't poke beyond the front fenders like the race tires.

JoeBoxer 08-20-2012 09:21 PM

Looks good i think 235/40 is the way to go if you aren't lowering for sure.

jimbobrand 08-20-2012 10:40 PM

Thanks! I came pretty close to getting 245/40's or 245/35's but decided on those for the time being.

Say u were to wanna lower it 1" or 1.5". What would need to be adjusted to have them fit

I'm pretty sure as it sits with the 235/40/18 Hankooks on the Gram Lights it wouldn't have any rubbing issues if lowered. I'm just not in a big hurry to lower the car. Also, it looks like you could maybe go a little wider in the front with lowering but I'll have to wait a while to test that out.

The 245/40/18 R-compounds are much wider than a typical street 245/40/18 and I don't think you can fit them with the car lowered without modifying the fenders or running a decent amount of negative camber.

Thanx alot. I'd really like to see how it fits after u lower it. Been contemplating on the linea lemans wheels w the 45+ offset, but I want to know if it'd fit after being lowered. Plz let me know when u lower it. I'd appreciate it :) thanx

Most likely it will be a while :( I've scraped the bumper at the stock ride height more times than I would like and that will only get easier and create worse damage with it lowered.

Plus I really haven't found a good solution to lower it that fits my needs yet. I'm going to wait till there is a nice strut and spring combo to hit the market since I just don't need the adjustments of a coilover setup and I would like similar to stock ride quality.

Same here. I'm waiting for aftermarket shocks & struts & a roll center adjusters to come out

karma003 09-25-2012 02:24 PM

Do u have any side views of the side profile. To see the poke or lack of poke?

jimbobrand 09-25-2012 02:40 PM

Not at the moment. I'll try to take some after work.

Looks beautiful! I like the bit of arch gap.
