I don't know much about track driving but did accidentally downshift from 5 to 2nd?

Summerwolf 01-30-2016 05:28 PM

Yes. Locked up rear wheels and went in to an uncontrolled skid.

If someone claims they have never mis-shifted a car they are lying, this just happened to be a horrible outcome.

He says at the end he mistakenly shifted from 5th to 2nd locking up the rear wheels.

jvincent 01-30-2016 05:33 PM

If you watched to the end, that's what he said he did.

Not wanting to be a backseat driver, but he spent way too much time in 5th gear on the R8 and he was in fifth before he wrecked the twin. But he was only doing 90MPH.

If you've tracked a twin you'll know that you shouldn't be anywhere near 5th gear at that speed. You've still got plenty of room in 4th. I wouldn't even think of going to fifth until at least 100MPH and only then if there were a lot of straight away left.

So in summary, his gear management sucks.

PureShield 01-30-2016 05:51 PM

Sucks to see that happened. Glad to see the driver is ok though but that's one of the risks you take tracking your car.

Teseo 01-30-2016 05:55 PM

I followed his rebuild progress, car is back up and running.

continuecrushing 01-30-2016 05:58 PM

how did none of the airbags go off?

FRSapex 01-30-2016 06:59 PM

I saw this vid a while ago - he actually goes on to chronicle this FRS's repair

Somewhere here is linked a clip of just the incident.

Here's my take. I'll guess he's used to driving his R8 which has a gated shifter. His muscle memory is settled pretty hard into it.

In the R8, the downshift requires a deliberate jog to the left. The 86 doesn't.

See where I'm going with this?

Also, that was not a 100 mi/h.

mdm 01-30-2016 08:00 PM

If he had AT with paddle-shifters.... ;-)

Hoahao 01-30-2016 08:18 PM

I hope he had track insurance

Partial front impact. He managed to hit so perfectly between the two sensors that neither the front or side bags were triggered. The corner of the bumper glanced off the wall enough that the bumper was not pushed back to activate the sensors. If he had hit at probably just a couple of more degrees angle he would have had an airbag in the face. There have been a couple of cases of that on here actually.

What's with the do-do brown engine bay?

I've done it a few times, but usually realize it the second the shifter goes into the gate, and don't let out the clutch until i'm back in the correct gear.

That said, you've got a lot more to concentrate on when you're track driving. Bad luck I guess

It is obviously a wrapped lava. That is the colour of the lava paint without the pearl added to it. That is what my bay looks like as well.

Just did that 6 months back and dumped the clutch. Damn thing shattered in 3 places and I had to drive the car from the freeway to the nearest shop stuck in 5th gear. I had to blow through a few red lights as I couldn't stop the car...

Yes I can relate. I'm used to the 6 speed in my FRS.

Drove my 5 speed Mustang the other day, to the dealership for Takata airbag replacement.
Had not driven the Mustang for about two months.

Upon exiting the dealership in the Mustang, getting up to speed, freeway onramp, went for 6th gear in the Mustang and found a grinding reverse instead. Never done that before in 50k miles on the Mustang. The brain gets locked into what it's used to (the FRS).

No more 5 speed trannys for me.

Oh shit, guess there's even more to learn...Tremec TR6070 (Vette) and ZF MT11 or 7MT (exact designation ?) (Porsche).

UFO 01-31-2016 01:22 AM

Thread title is a little harsh, he went from a gated shifter to a spongy gearbox and missed a shift, he wasn't being a **** which is normally the case for 'how not to drive on track.' I love my FRS but it has a few faults and my number one complaint is the gearbox; I hate it and have found myself hunting for gears before.

Funny how personal preferences can vary. I love the gearbox on the FRS. It is probably (for my driving style) the best I have ever used and find it slides into each gear with ease.

Mr.Impreza 01-31-2016 01:48 AM

This is why I'll keep my tracking days on Gran Turismo ^__^

Wise 01-31-2016 01:49 AM

Have to admit that I've made the 5th to 2nd mistake before. I wasn't going quite so fast so the engine just gave a big grumble and protest.

Ultramaroon 01-31-2016 01:55 AM

I think the gearbox is great. No complaints. No need to be in a hurry, just deliberate.

Braces 01-31-2016 09:53 AM

Ive owned both. The gated shifter is easy to shift and the gears go in precisely although the throws are somewhat long. The FRS in comparison to the gated shifter feels like a short shift transmission. Still not an excuse for his mistake.

From that camera angle it's easy to separate the men from the boys. Game face does not make the car go faster.

I thought you couldnt miss shift all the way to 2nd? As long as you dont let clutch out, and correct it, youre fine, no?

Guess these gear boxes dont have a safety lockout?

They do only for first. Still, he would have had to pull pretty hard to make that shift into second. If he was actually in the moment and feeling it instead of playing Speed Racer, he may have caught his error.

Should be a lockout for 1-3rd imo

jegglz 01-31-2016 04:01 PM

This is exactly how i blew my old turbo mr2's original engine up. Luckily i had no crash but it did spin the engine way above its redline. Got lucky on the crash though with no airbag deployments.
