Possible recall on the 86 regarding valve spring
May only be limited to ones manufactured between March 2012 and July 2013 for the FR-S in the USA, Subaru to recall ones made between January 2012 and September 2013. Forester and Impreza may also affected.
https://wtop.com/recalls/2018/11/toy...faulty-engine/ No details pertaining to the Canadian market but assume it'll be the same. |
Not "possible" it is a recall.

I've got a June 2012 build date, so I guess I'll have to keep checking my mail...
|
Yup will wait for the recall notice in the mail.
From that thread that Tcoat posted, it seems that the VIN range is this: Toyota VIN 002028 to 031176, Subaru 002002 to 010144. Is that specific for the USA? My VIN for the BRZ doesn't even fall in that range. |
Mine is an early 2012 build date, have to check when. Took delivery July 2012, so I suspect it'll be affected.

Since the Subaru Canada site doesn't have a place to enter your VIN to see if your car qualifies for the recall, you can email: customercare@subaru.ca with your VIN and ask them, and they'll let you know.
They got back to me within 12 hours. I emailed because I'm in a weird situation where my VIN doesn't fall in the VIN range, but my build date falls in the date range |
there is about 3051 units affected in Canada , only model year 2013 . Everyone will get a preliminary letter. Counter measure is currently being developed which I can assume like in the instance of the IS models, LS models and GS models that a superseded valve spring will be developed
Subject: Important Information – Engine Valve Spring Replacement on Certain 2013MY Scion FR-S Vehicles I would like to provide you with notice of an upcoming Safety Recall Campaign, so that you may prepare your staff to handle customer inquiries. Your dealership plays a valuable role in servicing our products and ensuring our customers remain confident in the quality and safety of their vehicles. We are thankful for your diligence in handling this campaign. Toyota will be initiating a Safety Recall Campaign (Ref. R68) on certain 2013MY Scion FR-S vehicles. Due to the excessive performance load compared to the design assumption of the valve spring, and manufacturing variation (variation of metal fatigue strength and micro foreign matter in spring material), performance load may exceed the valve spring’s fatigue strength and it may fracture. If the valve spring fractures, the engine may stall while driving and may become unable to restart it, increasing safety risk. Toyota is currently preparing the remedy for this condition. Once the preparations are complete, Toyota will send an owner notification letter by first class mail to owners of vehicles covered by this Safety Recall. There are approximately 3,051 Scion FR-S vehicles covered by this campaign. |
Just saw this. Yikes, guys. Toyota is about to become busy.

Good times for the people that take their cars off the road for the winter.
I guess they will need to schedule their service appointments in April. My car is produced in April 2012 but somehow the serial number ending precedes the recalled ones. NyX_Nick, I am in the same boat as you where my production date is in the range but not the serial number. Did they say you will need the service????? |
Well this is bad news but also good news if Toyota and Subaru are initiating a recall campaign. Those 2012-2013 FA20 were the guinea pig engines, this was expected. When I first heard about the valve spring issue I wasn't very surprised, just a bit worried. I hope my 2017 is not affected by this.
Good luck yall |

Followup to the recall notice. I DID NOT receive the notice for the 2013 Scion FR-S.
However, I did receive the notice for a 2012 xB that I bought new and traded back in 2014. |
I received the recall letter, my VIN wasn't in the range that was initially posted. Subaru said they'll contact by mail again when they have the parts and are ready for repair.
MY2013 i believe |
Traded my car back in september, and its in the vin range... wondering if i'll be the one receiving the letter...
