Johl's Toyota 86 Blackline Edition

G'day from oz

I recently joined your forum and I have to say the information available here is quite over whelming. I'm slowly getting through it and learning a lot about my car.

So a little about myself.
My name is Johl and I live in Australia. I'm in the Australian military and currently away on my 3rd deployment to the middle east. I have just bought a Blackline Edition 86 that I will pick up when I return home.

Prior to this car I had a Triumph Daytona 675R which I modified quite a lot

Before that I built an AE86 over quite a few years which is why I had such an interest in the new 86

My plans for my 86 are quite simple at this stage, however things tend to escalate out of control.

I'm looking to change the exhaust initially. I want to keep it Equal length and quite like the nameless 4-2-1 headers and the greddy super street titan cat back. I think it may be too loud so may make a custom mid pipe with a bigger Cat and resonator. I would also like to change to E-85 to make the most of the exhaust.

I will also buy Toms tail lights as I do not like the standard lights at all.

Lastly I will change the final drive in the diff. Coming from an AE86 I'm a huge fan of how much this changes how the car feels. I'm not sure which ratio to change it to or what brand.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading

Finally back from my deployment and picked the car up 2 weeks ago

Since this photo I have just tinted the windows and added a Kenwood ddx916ws head unit. That's about all I'm going to do to improve the interior at this stage.

I'm currently saving to put a turbo or supercharger on it by July next year. I have spent the last 8 months reading virtually everything I can get my hands on but I'm till undecided.

The criteria I need the supercharger or turbo to meet are-

Factory look- I need to retain an airbox to remain legal in my state. that means no pod filter. I don't want chrome in my engine bay. I want it all to look like it was a factory option. So positive displacement superchargers are out

I don't want to upgrade the clutch or fueling system yet.

I want it to be upgradeable in the future. I don't want to buy a kit and when I want more power and have upgraded the clutch, fuel system etc I don't want to have to pull everything off and have to buy new items. Do it once do the right.

So far in terms of looking like a factory setup I really like the avo turbo kit and hks v3 kit. But in my opinion the avo kit is not upgradeable easily in the future. However the hks setup is easy to make more power when desired by removing the restrictor plate and then going to e85 etc.

I also dislike the unequal length manifold sound so that is another strike against the avo kit.

I know it is really subjective but I would love to hear anyone's opinion on the hks v3 kit as there are not many people I have seen with this kit. Or if there are any other centrifugal superchargers or turbo kits I should look into please let me know

the Jackson Racing supercharger is a pretty good system, though I don't know about the legality of it in Australia (it is California CARB approved though). I think you should really re-think your dislike of PD SC's and look at the Harrop offering with the main key of it being street legal for Australia. IMO, it doesn't look too bad and can be considered "stock" looking

I actually do quite like the harrop and edelbrock supercharger. There is definitely nothing wrong with their kit. It really is amazing. I just prefer the power delivery of centrifugal over PD.

And harrop have a lot of support in aus so that is a huge positive for their setup.

Our emission laws are nothing like California. We are much more relaxed. I just notice 90% of the kits on offer utilise a pod filter rather than an airbox setup with a panel filter. That really is a deal breaker for me as it is illegal

So little response on such a great car. Lovely trd kitted example. We only got the boring versions over here

Any interior shots?

Looks amazing.

I will take some more pics today

Cosworth is a wonderful kit with a relatively oem look despite being a PD SC. It also uses the stock airbox.

Really really cool. So it's the same kit as the USDM TRD version but not with the quad tips exhaust, correct?

johl 10-29-2016 09:07 AM

No just the standard exhaust unfortunately. It looks tiny with a trd rear bumper.

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...psvznhiwg5.jpg

But yes it is the US trd kit which we never received in Australia until this limited model. We did receive the Japanese trd kit previously

Vin 10-29-2016 11:14 AM

Yeah I have the Japanese TRD kit on my car. Also with the same exhaust, looks a bit silly :) These huge cut-outs need some quad tips to fill the void.
