I'm not sure that it's more than just a stock oil pan issue, but having a stock pan on a 2ZZ is kind of a guarantee to lose your engine. Some people lose their engines on the street!

Also it doesn't respond to mods as well as a Honda F20 or K20.

Yep - I would love to put a 997 S engine with the X51 power kit into my Cayman (or even a 991 S engine, though I don't know about compatibility) - I just wish the 3.8s weren't so expensive...

I feel you. A working condition Cayman S for $35K and a 3.8 for another $30K ain't exactly chump change. Honestly doing it in a Boxster would be a good ~$20K cheaper simply due to how cheap one can find 986 S models.
