I tried everything to not send the payment as a gift when I first talked to him. Gave him couple different options. Even offered him $100 gift + $200 standard + 3% since he said he needed funds to send out the package.

I know I'm the idiot who gifted the payment in the end, but it's not like I tried to cover my ass from the get go.

Honestly if this was the situation, I'd just offer to pay extra for the 3% on his end.

This way you still get a great deal and he still gets his $300 or whatever sale price was. Everyone wins.

... but look at it this way. Even if it was an in-person cash transaction and you sold something, who is to say the other person isn't paying with counterfeit money? If a 3rd party system is set up to protect both buyer/seller and offer a dispute/mediation service, always take advantage of that.

I did offer him $300 + 3% in the beginning. That was the first thing I said to him. I always do this for all the Paypal transaction that I do.

He just said he needed $ to send out the package. He said his life took a shitty turn, had to give up his BRZ, had to move to Nebraska from Maryland. He needed quick cash and room at his place, that's why he's selling the exhaust.

So, I believed it and gift him the payment. Call me a dumbass because I know I am.

Yeah, I have always linked my bank account to use on Paypal.

Your bank doesn't care, PayPal cares. So there's two lines of defense:

1) PayPal (within their period for disputes)
2) Credit card company (if option 1 fails and assuming you paid with credit card)

1) To scam
or
2) To not pay the credit card fees and pass the cost of doing business to the buyer.

To avoid this, ideally the admin should set concrete rules of either product w/ forum name on a piece of paper, or prohibit all sales with a "PayPal gift" option. All sales should be via normal PayPal or otherwise verified method of payment, to avoid these types of situations.

Yes, scammers will still try to game the system. However, by using a normal PayPal method of payment for a product, you as a buyer will be protected, and so will the seller.

Sometimes saving 3% means losing 100%.

Yeah I *always* pay the free unless I know the seller.

On the flip side of this story I've had a set of forged wheels show up that I forgot I bought.. sent the funds right away when they arrived lol

Surprisingly it wasn't in the rule book.

Insisting on the gift option accomplishes two things:
1- he doesn't pay fees to withdrawl the money from PP.
2- He is exempt from PP's normal buyer protection.

Sending money as a "gift" makes no difference in how quickly he gets the money, so insisting that "gifting" is the only way to do it quickly, is BS.

social engineering. just keep searching variants of a username with any known data about the person of interest and bingo - youll find things. i was hoping to find his address some place, but the twat was pretty good at not disclosing certain things. he's gone back to MANY forums over the last month and deleted dozens of posts with identifying information.

thats all i could really dig up in 15 mins at work. give me an hour at home and i should find more information. a lot of links/pic sites, etc. are blocked. searching his plate number should return a county or insurance information on a simple background check website

Wow.

Guess he really wanted that $300. :bellyroll:

So, he might still be in Maryland, not Nebraska?

based on his activity deleting and modifying posts on various forums (like the truck vacuum for whatever forum i originally linked) it was posted three weeks ago. his WTB ad says to call him at that number (same as what is cached on VWV) and that he is willing to drive a few hours outside of maryland.

Im reasonably confident he is in maryland and that is his contact number.
