haha small car community.. the veloster just could not get epa gas milage which pissed me off while i did say that I "lugged" the motor i meant it as in I drove slow not to the point where the motor is struggling to keep up.. my brzs first 2 tanks have both netted 31mpg and thats with aggressive city driving

I've been watching the Veloster Turbo over the past week and I've grown to fall in LOVE with it. At first when my father showed me the vehicle, i could never imagine myself in one. Now, after thoroughly looking through the specs, I found it to be a great car for me. The appearance seemed to be acquired over a couple days. I was looking at other options such as the FR-S, GTI, and Focus ST. However, with this being my second car at the age of 19. I found that the Volester turbo would be the most bang for its buck and most enjoyable (keep in mind, I've only been driving about 2 years with an auto e320). I'm most likely purchasing one for Chirstmas fully loaded for about 25k. I'll see what sort of deal the dealer will throw at me.

I was thinking about all this Toyobaru/The Twins deal... and I thought, what about the Veloster? It looks quiet similar, came out at about the same time... I think it is pretty much the Hatch FRS/86/BRZ... Does anyone else agree? Considering they are both very similar. In my opinion, they both fall into the same category. Basically this whole thing is just like the 4WD ute deal last year, with the Mitsubishi Triton, Toyota Hilux, etcetera... So now there is a small-ish sporty car thing going on. Who will be next? Mitsubishi? Mazda already has the RX-8 which ALSO pretty much falls into the same category.

Opinions?

If the Australian Veloster is even remotely similar to the US version, then I have no idea what you're talking about. It's a slow, squishy, front wheel drive economy car.

I assume you mean the Veloster Turbo. And the answer is still no.

Aside from the fact that the Twins and the Veloster are small, relatively inexpensive cars advertised as "fun" rides, the two have very little in common. The Hyundai is FWD, which alone puts a lot of distance between the two vehicles.* And as far as I can tell all Hyundai changed from the normal Veloster was adding a small turbocharger and a sportier interior. The chassis, suspension, transmission, steering, etc. are virtually unchanged from the base model, which means that while the Turbo is about as powerful as the Twins it's an uninspiring driving experience.

So no, I wouldn't put the Veloster in the same category as the Twins. Having said that, I do think the Twins are almost singlehandedly bringing back the inexpensive compact sports car market. As Chris Harris on /Drive puts it, the world needs to get back to a point where we're enjoying "performance because of its nature, not because of its quantity."



*FWD isn't necessarily a death sentence, as the Focus ST is still decently fun to drive.

I remember reading that a long time ago. You didn't say Turbo, and I've only driven the NA version myself, so that's all I can use for a first hand comparison. That being said, I still say there's no comparison, even comparing it to the Turbo. Did you read the whole article, or just the first part?

The veloster is shit. Doesn't matter if its turbo or not. It might be cool for a 16 year old girl or an old lady but it drives and handles like shit. We could not sell used velosters at our dealership to save our lives. For the price of veloster go get a scion tc or a corolla because its such more bang for the buck.

In fairness, it did out-slalom the FR-S, according to that article. But that is it.

I've driven the non-turbo veloster and unless there is something radically different with the turbo other then power there is no real comparison. Also keep in mind that 200hp with a turbo is not as good as 200hp NA.

I like the Veloster Turbo on paper. In practice, they took a potentially good hot hatch candidate, gave it some more aggressive styling and a spunkier engine, and then neutered it with gearing for higher MPG. No LSD, and in the Hyundai Think Tank chats I've participated in, they didn't really seem very focused on making it much better either. I was told right away that IRS would never be considered for their higher horsepower model - keep in mind that this is back when the Turbo model didn't even exist and we were chatting about "a possible new sporty trim addition to the Veloster lineup. Kudos to them for making an economy car available with a matte paint option, though.

Based on my experience with the car itself, I was more disappointed than I expected to be. The touch points aren't very good, parts feel overly cheap even if they look okay on the inside, and it just doesn't feel that great to drive. As a slightly-faster appliance car, it should do fine. But there are plenty of other cars in its segment I'd pick way before I had to settle on the VT.
