Is it just me, or is Toyota remaking Suzuki's Capaccino?

DAEMANO 08-18-2014 10:09 PM

I want to see Toyota "out Fiesta" Ford with true RWD and not FWD in disguise. The brilliance of the '86 is that it has a fixed roof, back seat and aggressive styling. Toyota brought everything ppl were asking for in the Miata and got a sales hit in NA and JPN. The new car should do the same vs the fiesta.

The baby RWD Toyota should be the sports car progression of what the RWD Starlet could have been...unfortunately will be a lot heavier compared to the original KP61 Starlet...(~1,600lbs). My Brother and I always wanted to mod an old Starlet (put in a 20valve 4AGE blacktop)... basically impossible cars to find though.

Basically make it a modern version of this Toyota (but with sports car handling like the FRS):

Yes please!!! We already have cars like the Yaris, xD, and Auris (fwd tho). Toyota doesn't have a smaller sexy 2 seater sports car.

Sounds like everything you wanted with an available hardtop.

i hope it isn't a hatchback. Toyota already offers something similar with the xD and that upcoming Auris thats rumored to be badged a Scion in the US.

give us a small roadster, coupe, and shoot brake Toyota!!!

The xD isn't going to be produced by the time this car comes out, and the Auris is a Corolla sized hatchback. It would be basically the same thing Ford has done with the Focus & Fiesta, and I see enough of both on the road to believe that Ford is making out pretty well with those 2. I don't see an issue with a car company offering 2 different sized hatchback cars.

right, but we will still have the Yaris hacthback and the upcoming rebadge Mazda2 for Scion. Toyota doesn't currently offer a tiny 2 seater coupe or roadster, and IMO that is what the sub 86 car should be.

I would like the sub 86 car to be a roadster/coupe. I'm not too big on wagaons and they never sold that well in the US.

Toyota believed to plan sub GT86 model with 130 bhp and 980 kg weight

Codenamed "69DZ"

Toyota is apparently cooking up a new sports car set to be positioned underneath the GT86.

Sources close to Toyota from Japan cited by Motoring are saying the model in question will be powered by a four-cylinder 1.5-liter engine developing 130 bhp (97 kW) wrapped around in a body weighing just 980 kg (2,160 lbs).

Toyota's Miata is codenamed "69DZ" and will allegedly have a design influenced by the 1965 Toyota Sports 800. The final styling will have a lot in common with the 86 Style Cb pictured above so expect to see rounded headlights, a large front grille, an unusual "lump" on the hood, along with short front & rear overhangs and a curvy silhouette with flared wheel arches.

The 2+2 RWD coupe is likely getting both 6-speed manual and automatic Aisin gearboxes sourced from its bigger brother, the GT86. Interestingly, it is believed Toyota has hired ex WRC driver Tommi Mäkinen to fine-tune the model's handling.

If this report turns out to be legit, expect Toyota's baby GT86 to go on sale at the beginning of 2018.

Holy crap AutoGuide writes an article based on a two year old Drive article and calls it news?

Toyota working on small sports car
Date August 9, 2013

Since there has not been one official Toyota statement nor concept shown on these mini 86s in the two years since the drive "article" was written I don't think I would hold my breath waiting.
Yet another speculative piece from Drive that the rest of the click baits will jump on in slow news periods.
OK, keeping track of the times this gets posted so...1

I did find it interesting that they used such an old article, they must really be running out of ideas.
