I still like the FRS/BRZ a lot though. I just wouldn't be in love with it in stock form though.

So I just wanted to put my two cents in on the comparison because I was honestly very surprised when I test drove the Gen Coupe yesterday.

I have owned my Asphalt, automatic FR-S for 4 months now and I've loved it since the day I got it. I decided to have some fun yesterday and go the dealerships on Van Nuys and test drive cars with a buddy. We ended up at Hyundai and the salesman let us drive their only manual R-Spec on the lot.

I must say, it was VERY underwhelming. I was expecting the 74 extras horsies and more torque to throw me in my seat and really be more... thrilling... but it wasn't. Sure there was more power, but nothing mind blowing. The steering feel and throttle response felt numb (compared to the FR-S) and the shifting was clunky. The interior was nice but not leagues ahead of the FR-S (I personally like the simplicity and practicality of the FR-S's interior). I placed my foot to the floor right when I launched in 1st and all I could think was that the car felt like a tank. It had more power but it needs to because it feels so damn heavy. Also, the R-Spec tuning is bullsh!t (or maybe the non R-Spec feels even worse) because the suspension (compared to the FR-S) was subpar.

Overall, the Gen Coupe was completely underwhelming... I can't recommend it whatsoever to anyone really... unless they want a slightly smoother ride (which by smoother I mean sluggish). It may be quicker than the FR-S but it sure doesn't feel it.

P.S.: I went by the Subaru dealership to try out the WRX or Sti (if they had one) and I must say, the WRX felt SO cheap. My friend and I both felt like the interior was cheap, plasticy, and felt like a toy. So, for all those people who think the FR-S has a cheap interior, go sit inside a new 2013 WRX and quit complaining.

I don't own either car, but I've driven both. I do like the handling feel of the FR-S better than the GenCoupe. But to say that the difference in power isn't mind blowing, well, maybe that's too much to expect from an extra 74 HP. Okay, so it's not mind blowing, but it is a BIG difference. The GenCoupe pulls so much harder. THAT is the kind of power that the FR-S so desperately needs to make me interested. I'm not even so much interested in HP as I am in torque. If the FR-S just had more torque (especially down low), it would be a fantastic car. I'm convinced that this car will eventually be offered with a factory turbo. Until then, I'm holding on to my money.

I say the same damn thing. This car doesn't need HORSEPOWER!!! I would rather them add 50 lb ft/0 extra hp over 50 hp/5 extra tq anyday.

Sure it has a great platform and size but the engine is only respectable at 6500+ rpms. What good is a sports car with a engine that has no guts? I'd rather drive a 370Z Sport or Nismo. Sports cars with great handling/power. The biggest difference between a FRS and a GC really comes down to size and weight. The Camry platform is your typical run of the mill FWD platform with about 63% of the weight on the front and seating for 5. I have been in a Camry and a GC and they feel nothing alike. Sure the GC is not a true sports car mainly because of its size and weight but even if a Camry was 500 lbs lighter it would still be a FWD family vehicle.

Dude, chill out, haha. I didn't even notice that you drive an RSX, so please don't take my last post as an insult and get your panties all in a bunch. Talk sh*t all you want about the S2000, but this isn't the place for it. All I know is that most RSX (aka Civic) owners drool over S2000s whereas S2K owners don't even notice you guys. Seems like you have some sort of complex and didn't get hugged as a kid.

My point with comparing the Gen Coupe with the Camry is that both are merely marketing ploys, whether it's the RWD in the Gen Coupe or the bodykit on the Camry, to get people like you to think that they are driving something special.

Sorry to derail this thread.

I never lusted after that shit you drive bro(If I was to win a S2000 it would go toward a 370Z Sport or a 2008 Cayman S). Don't flatter yourself. My favorite Honda product is the NSX and nothing else that Honda makes. Honda's is overrated and only good for reliable transportation

edit: decided to go with a FRS even though its not even on the poll :p

IF you're looking for a true unbiased answer, wrong place to ask that. lol. Obviously our answers will be the BRZ

Agreed, I have been able to drive both an Automatic FR-S and manual FR-S and, while there were things I really liked about the car over other cars in this price class, it was extremely underwhelming for me for power. Especially for torque, and especially the automatic. A factory turbo or supercharger, larger tires, and a few more ameneities in the interior (I can't live without audio and bluetooth controls on the steering wheel) and I would be all over this car.

Yeah, personally, I'm waiting for the factory turbocharged model to come out. Despite the naysayers, I'm completely convinced that it's just a matter of time before we will see a turbo under the hood. I'm in no hurry to buy another car anyway, so if it takes a while, I'm okay with that.

I agree. Whether it be by turbo or other method, there will be a more powerful version of the car at some point. With completely new Mustang coming out soon, I suspect Subaru/Toyota will try to appeal to buyers who want more power, especially as initial demand on the FR-S/BRZ is met.

And, obviously, you can go aftermarket, but I am a factory turbo kind of guy :)

SUB-FT86 11-02-2012 03:59 PM

Yeah I don't believe in going aftermarket turbo on a N/A engine from the factory. I want the manufactured tested engine with a long warranty. That's why when people say "well you can go the aftermarket route with the FRS/BRZ if the engine isn't to your taste" I just ignore them.

The thing I love about factory turbo engines is that, more often than not, they're overbuilt because they're designed with boost in mind from the beginning. Don't get me wrong, an aftermarket turbo can be great if its done right, but I've seen time and time again when people throw a turbo kit on a naturally aspirated engine and the engine can't handle the boost in the long term. Sometimes it works great for a while though! Over the long term, things often go downhill. I've seen it over and over again...

If for some reason they decide to increase the power without forced induction, I'll be very disappointed. I mean, increased power is always good, but I really think a small twin-scroll turbo would be perfect on these engines. There would be virtually no lag and plenty of low-end torque. I'd actually be disappointed if they decided to use a supercharger, although that would also provide great low-end torque. As you can probably tell, I'm a BIG fan of turbochargers.

I have a good friend who tried that with a Supra. He purchased an N/A Supra and tried to turn it into a Supra Turbo. The end result was not pretty. The car was fast as hell for a while. And then it wasn't so fast anymore. LOL

I have the FR-S and I wanted to weigh in on the interior. This is a place where Toyota and Subaru cut some corners. I don't know that it can be justified by the price though. Even the Tc has a better quality interior and don't get me started on a golf. But if saving a few pennies helped get this car off the ground then I'm all for it. Honestly I don't stare at the cheap ac controls enough to notice.

If you want a lot more power then just get a Z. If you want the most fun for your dollar this car could be it. Heck I got some major sideways action at under. 30mph the other day. I haven't done that since I had my first image, a 99, and new miatas have lost a lot of the original spirit these days.
