The cross section we here really supports those targets as being met since (with a few rare exceptions) we see exactly those two groups well represented. Don't see a whole pile of guys with older kids and a lot of the members that have traded in started their story with "well the wife is having another baby and...".

Actually the numbers are most likely pretty dead on if you are talking about buyers (or technically registered car owners) not drivers.

The issue is that there are a lot more people in the population over 30 than under and for the average to be lower you have to have a very high ratio of under 30 buying to lower the number.

Simple example, if you assume that the earliest age a person buys a car (not given one) is 18, and the oldest person to buy a car is 70, and every age in between buys the cars in equal numbers (one per year of age) then the average car buying age is 44.

To raise it, only one person over the age of 44 has to buy a car.

To lower it, for every person over the age of 44 that buys a car more than 1 person under 44 would have to buy one. (if it's one to one the average stays the same).

I love this thread! I'm turning 39 in a couple of weeks and will be spending my birthday getting headers and an Ecutek flash. I've been driving a Mazda3 for the last 9 years (well, two in a row to be fair--an '06 and then a '12) but once my kids stopped fitting comfortably in the backseat anymore, I decided it was time to drive something just for me. The BRZ has become my daily driver and I use my F150 any time I need to haul kids or my hockey bag or run to Costco. I get a little flack about my car being a midlife crisis car, but I don't really care.

Old guys rule!

:burnrubber:

Hell, I remember the '50s. I was mounting a 283 in my '30 Model A.

My first (in a long line!) sports cars was a '56 TR3.

I thought scion is suppose to be the brand for youth....but somehow their marketing makes younger generation wanna dig a hole for themselves.

And I just Notice the Youngest brand is Izusu... with Land Rover on the 2nd? I get Izusu but Land Rover? How does that work......

Number of cars sold. Say they only sold three and two buyers were younger than the other! The more sold the less impact the ages have on the average spread.

REAV3R 03-24-2015 04:44 PM

41 here...
Borla UEL, Berk dual muffler delete, OFT tuned, and drop-in K&N for mods. My last car was an Dodge SRT4 (Neon, not the Caliber crap). Fell in love with the FT86 because of Gran Turismo 5's hype. Once I drove it at the dealership it was all over! I guess I'm "that" demographic; kids are grown and no need to drive four-door econoboxes anymore. I'd list my previous vehicles, but given the average age of the audience in here... I'm afraid there would be much snoring and not much reading past 87 Ford Tempo! LOL

I don't remember much about the Sixties and Seventies, the Eighties are a blur, but somewhat memorable. I do remember the cars though, from the '59 Beetle to the '63 Mini, to the Porsches, Audis, BMW's. What were we talking about?

Pete156 03-24-2015 06:31 PM

58

Previous cars include Chevelles, Mustangs, Delta 88, Skylark, Impala, Jeeps, Vans, two race cars, and nineteen motorcycles. Something about rear wheel drive vehicles makes me feel alive.

Now I hit the autocross cones 'cause I can't see them, and occasionally go to car meets with people half my age.

Caspeed 03-24-2015 07:22 PM

I just celebrated the 23rd anniversary of my 40th birthday. The twins remind me of the British cars I've owned. Except that they are coupes and actually start up and run when you want them to.

Joe Lucas, the "Prince of Darkness". You haven't known British cars until you have to crawl under the car to tap on the fuel pump to unstick the points so that the car will start. Or had to unstick the starter pinion from the flywheel.

But those cars were a blast to drive because you were flat-out everywhere you went.

That's why, although I would like more power, I don't complain about a lack of power in the Twins.

Don't know if I've posted in this thread before, but I turned 40 in October '14. Within months my waste has begun to expand and I am starting to use my arms to help myself up off the sofa. Bending over to tie my shoe laces got much more difficult and I seem to get drunk on my first 2 beers, but am able to carry on drinking for much longer. I also find myself following the 45mph brigade and NOT dieing to overtake them. Always looking for an easy life.

I thought these things were supposed to happen gradually! I was fit as a fiddle at 39.... (okay, maybe not).

Just thought I'd add this in here to add some cheer to those in their high 30s. Wuahahahaha.

If you are a Production Engineer (or at least could do the job of one) I will hire you for my Windsor plant! Don't even need to stop smoking as that is where we get half our work done anyway.

I smoked for 22 years. Started to get funny stuff happening to my lungs. Moved to vaping and my lungs improved within hours, better within days and I have saved myself a load of money in the process. I wouldn't promote vaping as totally safe and as it's still a nicotine habit I would NEVER recommend you start vaping, but when compared with the known lethal combustion of tobacco it's the far lesser evil.

My car used to smell of smoking. A few weeks after I started vaping a friend got in and said, "Oh, it smells nice in here, smell of sweets.", I figured as there was no air freshener it had to be the Berry flavoured juice I was vaping.

I started about a month ago, I went from a pack a day to 2-3 packs a week so far.

Oh, I'm 41 so I'm old enough to post in this thread :-).

I'm 55 in 3 weeks and enjoying my 1.0 and retirement in south Florida.

I'm 56 -- certainly old enough to know better but gonna' do it anyway!

Only mods at this point are brake pads (toasted the stock pads at Buttonwillow). Plan soon on oil cooler, brake kit and of course wheels/tires

Quite the opposite really! See those military pattern tires? With anything from 1 to 4 inches of snow you were not going anywhere and they only worked when it got really deep. Great plan on Canadian trucks.

Oh and it is a 5 ton and had under 100 Kms on it when I started driving it. Judging by the MO chalked on the tailgate that was part of the very rare occasions it was used for gas. I usually hauled aviation fuel for choppers. You did not want to mix the two up!

Most of the ones I've driven had over 80000km. One of the ones I drove was stupid low though, 2000 or so. Though, assumed it was because the odo rolled over

Not coincidently they are probably 1976s or 77s.
They were replacing the old GMCs at that point. I actually drove trucks that had seen service in the Korean war in 1951!

Coming up on double-4s for me in April.

I've been pulled-over 2x since having my FR-S, I fully believe that both times the cops probably thought they were pulling over some young smart-ass that needed a little harassment...But when they actually see me (or on that first pull-over, my son in the car seat), they're taken aback and re-assess.

So on the first pull-over, it was for NOT changing out of the right-most lane when an officer is stopped in the emergency lane. He let me go with a warning, but gave me a ticket for having a license plate holder that obstructed part of the wording of the plate.

On the second pull-over, it was for speeding and having yellow headlights (Laminate). While I was getting him my license and the other stuff, he actually asked me if I was the registered owner of the car. He looked at my info and instead of walking back to his cruiser to write anything out, he just handed everything back and said 'Okay, you're free to go and slow down.".
