With Nissan beginning the show to begin the "90's era" Sportscar wars (hopefully!), I think we're in for a really great treat

But yes, it has to be a newly engineered chassis, RWD, a great manual transmission, and with the name (something)SX, or preferably: SILVIA!

harajukukei 07-19-2012 12:54 PM

a long while back there was a concept for a new gen Silvia but it was all wheel drive... hopefully they revisit that design and make it FR.

Mazda toyed with the idea of a new RX-7 as well.. basically it was a 2-door rx-8 with a wider wheel base and a turbo'd renesis.

If the popularity of the 86/brz wakes up automakers it would be great. I'd really love to see a resurgence of light 2 door FR 2.0T coupes that the 90s was rife with.

Xenocide117 07-19-2012 01:14 PM

I'd much rather have a Focus ST. Even though it's FWD I will likely test drive one when I am ready to buy an FR-S.

Synack 07-19-2012 01:39 PM

Ugh, just wish theyd bring back the 240 already. S16!!

I have little faith in Nissan, Honda, or Mitsubishi any more. They've all let eco-wacko hybrid beancounters take over and are hell-bent on taking the Boringmobile title Toyota used to be the undisputed master of.

The only reason we have the GT-86 is because Akio Toyoda kicks ass. Without him, no LFA, no GT-86. We'd be looking forward to some "performance" Prius coupe a la the CR-Z. Unless Nissan/Honda gets a similar CEO with a "make a fun car, damn it" focus, we won't be seeing a new Silvia any time soon.

Uh, GTR and Z are not fun cars? New NSX not hitting your happy button? Evo was too boring?

I can agree that Honda makes nothing fun, realistically, but Z's are pretty damn fun cars. So are G37's. As for Mitsu, they're a bit of a debacle.

I'd much rather them do this than make a tiny hatch FWD junker.

Competition is fun, people jump ships/bandwagons all the time anyways. :)

Caliban 07-19-2012 03:06 PM

that thing is ugly!:laughabove:

DantKR 07-19-2012 03:09 PM

^ Agreed. That thing is NOT a competitor with the FR-S/BRZ.

The GT-R I have a healthy amount of respect for, but it's not a car for the masses. I like the Z; it's nice for what it is, but it's a big V6 pony like the Mustang, not a nimble 4cyl like the Silvia.

The Evo is not so much "boring" as too sedany. It and the WRX are soooo close and yet just can't make that leap. They want to be sporty, but there's those extra doors, saying "but, but, but, I have kids, my wife won't let me buy a two door". Imagine, if you will, the Evo. Take it and shorten it, remove the rear doors, and reduce the size of the rear seats into a 2+2 configuration, or remove them entirely. When I look at those cars I always see what they could have been.

With a little FI help, the BRZ will be that car.

So, unless a car is 4 cylinder and cheap, it's boring. I understand now, carry on.

Turbowned 07-19-2012 03:36 PM

That's the dumbest idea I've heard in a while. NISSAN! Get off your GT-R crackpipe and start making good sports cars for us commoners!! The Z is big, heavy and noisy and I don't want Robosaurus GT-R to do the driving for me, nor do I want another FWD compact on the market! Get your shit together or I will burn my "Nissan Motorsport" t-shirt and sell my 240Z and you can just go to hell!

Neither the GT-R nor the Z is boring.

The CR-Z is boring, however. So is the Veloster.

Not really. While this thread is about the FWD Nissan Asia hatch thing, it's just generalized griping about some of the inexplicable decisions made by Japanese car makers lately and malaise about the seemingly endless litany of hybrid whatsits and FWD odd-number-of-door thingies.

To be honest, I completely forgot about the Fairlady. I've always liked that car. The current iteration is a bit large for my personal tastes, but I do like it quite a bit. Except the convertible. The styling of that leaves me utterly cold.

Oh, I understand now. Yeah, I completely agree. My reading comprehension may have failed a bit given the context of the thread.

But while the econoboxes keep coming out, I am excited by efforts like the Twins. It gives me hope that if this segment thrives and expands, hopefully it will keep the Miata alive for a while, and hopefully Nissan and/or Honda will get in on the act. I'd love to see a new Silvia. I think pretty much everyone in this thread would agree. Something to directly compete with the twins.

MVJ1975 07-19-2012 04:09 PM

I'm hoping they inspire a new RWD sports car revival too. There's an off-chance we might see a new Silvia, given Nissan's willingness to make sports cars, but I have little hope in Honda. They're going off the deep end into eco-hell at full speed. Unless sales of the 86 and any new Silvia are fantastic, I can't see it forcing the beancounters hands past maybe dropping the Si engine in the CR-Z.

THAT there my friend would be called an Eclipse GSX. Of course it's been axed a long time ago as will be the EVO as we know it. :(

As for this car, it's more along the lines of a Beetle Turbo or Mini Cooper competitor to me. What a joke to even include the FRS/BRZ in this one.

I love the Eclipse GSX. I used to drool over them on a regular basis. Of course, by the time I was ready to let my MX-3 die Mitsubishi had killed it and the most interesting car I could find was a tC. Ugh.

dori. 07-19-2012 06:22 PM

Fwd? Sorry but that's fail. I'm very disappointed. Was hoping for something comparable to a S chassis car. Maybe they couldn't because they may feel a low price rwd coupe would cannibalize Z sales.

This is the reason I enjoy this forum so much, I stumbled onto a different import forum the other day trying to find info for some wheels and one member was commenting on anothers choice in wheels and something to the effect of "why would you get 7 inch wide wheels? that's gonna look so F#(#*$@ gay". Glad MOST of the people are WAY more mature than that.

I still have faith in Nissan. I think they will still be coming out with something FR within the next 3-5 years if the 86 does well.

Moshpit37 07-19-2012 06:35 PM

How can a company smart enough to make the GT-R be so dumb? I hope whoever wrote this got this wrong, WAY wrong... but either way, I'll be enjoying my FR-S while everyone else waits for whatever Nissan decides to roll out.

kduff85 07-19-2012 07:02 PM

I'll get my BRZ and if someone ACTUALLY does something awesome then I'll check it out. But completely happy with what Toyobaru did and can't wait to own a piece of it :)

Nissan's first attempt at whatever they're attempting is a fail IMO. ugly ugly ugly.

titusdrake 07-19-2012 07:27 PM

What i want to see is a RX-8 with the mazdaspeed DISI engine and the AWD drivetrain and suspension from the MS6. Oh my Jesus THAT would be a monster.

Or if Mitsubishi took the Evo engine and AWD system into an Eclipse.. -sigh- if only i was a CEO...

Sent from my DROID RAZR

Tujin 07-19-2012 08:03 PM

I'm still holding out hope that Mitsubishi will pull their heads out of their asses and revive the Starion ;)

I loved that car!

Short sweet and too the point...... Lets all go get civics instead We need more AWD and RWD cars not more hondas

Enilder 07-19-2012 10:36 PM

They got nothing on FRS/BRZ with FWD ~$22k.

Now, something like S2000 successor will be a competition (actually, a notch higher than FRS/BRZ level).

Razz 07-19-2012 11:59 PM

Nissan has 4 options

GT-R
G-37
Z
Altima 2 door

Why do they need another one?

Why do they need another one?

1. Insane price
2. Luxury > Sportiness, also price
3. Not a 2+2
4. FWD

how can you say that? the car hasnt even been made yet. there are plenty of cars that already exist that are fwd and similar or superior to the performance of the frs
