i sure hope not. the auto version of sporty cars always gets screwed. mazda's skyactiv auto shows how it ought to be done. shrink the torque converter and have it lock up most of the time...

Geard 10-21-2011 06:02 PM

I meant it in terms of more is better not that it is poor to begin with but rather to get the most out of whats available, additional torque being an awesome by product!:happyanim:

To improve the fuel efficiency part is understandable... why they need to improve the low end tq? Subaru's boxer engine is well known for good low end tq.

Probably because it's a 2.0 liter and not a 2.5l?

I hope not. Japanese(Nissan has stopped doing this though) automakers have a way of giving the automatic guys the shitty ass engines and I am very worried about this.:iono:

I hope both auto and manual get 200hp and the same torque, pretty much the same engine is what I mean.

Spaceywilly 10-21-2011 06:59 PM

This may have been said already, but 210*5252/6500=170, so we know it makes 170lb/ft at least from 4000 to 6500. I'm sure it falls flat on its face after that though. Maybe I will do some math later but I think shifting at 6500 should keep you right in the power band with a close ratio 6 speed, so it should be plenty torquey when driven properly. Of course this still all depends on the weight. 170lb/ft in a 2800 car would be pretty lame I think.

Neutral_Eyes 10-21-2011 07:10 PM

Nice ninja edit. :D

What bugs me is they have DI and Yamaha tuning and it's still basically producing decade-old SR20VE power numbers.

:(

I have 140 lbft@5k in a 2800 lb car right now so I think 30 more ft lbs@-1k sounds good to me if it's true which I think not.

I hope they aren't implying it won't have a sunroof option. I want a sunroof.

Altezza auto engine was basically tuned for lower-end torque/midrange power, probably to offset a) the torque converter's losses and b) people buying auto are less likely to be banging off redline shifts, and drive with the 'power under the curve. I just can't see it being too weak to handle 159 lb-ft. :iono:

Alternatively c) same problem as the rotary?

Uh what? What do you mean "we know it makes 170lb/ft at least from 4000 to 6500"? It looks like you're assuming power is constant, which is completely false.

this assumption by auto manufacturers annoys me... a properly designed auto can rival the DCTs and AMTs of the world...

if these assumptions show up in the FT, i'll instantly lose faith in this car...

I think it shows more that the guy who wrote the article has little clue about how engines work.

But I also think that it could hint at someone leaking the real BMEP number...

Peak torque is 170 at 4000 rpm. Peak hp is 210 at 6500rpm = 170lb/ft, meaning it is still making peak tq at that point. After that, tq falls off quickly, or else peak hp would be higher. Unless the torque dips in the middle and then comes back up (I don't think I've ever seen that), it will make 170 between those two RPMs.

No.

Most guys on here don't want one because it takes headroom away which is vital to many of the guys who wear helmets and race. I personally want one and hope it is an option.

This.

I'd rather them sell an alternate convertible version for women and people going through mid-life crisis.

They have already planned an automatic version for that market.

That's why I don't want one. And it's pointless. I have it in one car but not the in the other. I never use it in one and never miss it in the other. I don't even know if it works in the one.. I think I've used it twice in 11 years.

I don't care if it's an option, as long as it's not standard. That would seriously make me look elsewhere.

BTW, I'd have suspected that other magazines and blogs were also invited to the event. So I'm surprised that some mention of it hasn't popped up in other venues.

Toyota should just say "F*** you Subaru" by designing a new Supra that is ridiculously fast, efficient and affordable.

See further the brilliantly designed 7AT in the 370Z. Just a trick slushbox, but soooo fast on the shifts and capable of being tuned to be even faster without changing the valve body.

Wait... "driver's car" = lacks power and has a clutch pedal... I completely forgot this law that came from the bearded lips of God.

Those crappy supercars with their flappy paddle gear boxes are an affront to the faithful everywhere :iono:

Geard 10-22-2011 01:54 AM

I just hope the car comes with 5x114.3 bolt pattern....and that toyota designed the engine/trans/diff... at least a strut knock is an easy fix!
Personaly I feel that anything but Manual is an insult to a sports car. Sitting there and letting the car do the work for you while you drink your morning coffee seems pretty damn weak.

No, current 2L H4 isn't gutless at low rpm. I can tell you that for sure. Out of other 2L 4 cylinders, I'll say EJ20 is up there. Also FB20 is 145hp, but it comes w 145tq too! Don't underestimate boxer engine... BUT again, engine is setup for AWD... so not sure FA20's gonna be

KevinDuMa 10-22-2011 04:52 AM

As for the sun roof, there is no need for a sun roof, at least for me. I've owned 4 cars all with a sun roof and have not used it in any of them. If anything have it as an option.

Farred 10-22-2011 04:54 AM

i have mixed feelings on the sunroof. i have it in the si and i always keep it closed but everyone once in a blue moon i will tilt the sunroof to pull some air out. i like the fact that the evo x didnt have one but i missed the blue moon cracking. call me crazy. dont know what i want for this car tho.

As for it being accurate? That is your opinion, this isn't 1995 where you had a full auto transmission. This is just retarded hatred from you manual only types and you know it.

Edit... Remember that the BEAMS 3SGE managed 159 lb-ft from a 2.0L about a decade ago.

Beams in the RS200 made a lillte over 160ft-lbs @ 6000rpm.. say ~163 I think.

Sorry man, I just don't see the point of an automatic in a sports car. To me the point of driving a sports car is the experience, the engagement, the driver enjoyment. An automatic errodes on all of that.

I'm cool with an automatic if I ever decide to buy a Lexus LS430 though. That, IMO, is where an automatic belongs.

At least Honda did it right for many years with their top model sporty/sports cars. If you want the good one, learn to drive a manual or GTFO. :)

SUB-FT86 10-22-2011 10:05 AM

But Dave that's what I love about competition in this world we live in. POS companies like Honda isn't the only way to go if you want a manumatic/dct sports car. Nissan and other companies got the fucking memo and they are laughing straight to the bank while your beloved Honda makes more hybrid so called sports cars. LMFAO!!!

Dave-ROR 10-22-2011 12:01 PM

Lol I'm not really a Honda whore and have owned cars from all the major asian manufacturers.

I don't like the Z outside of the NISMO Z (it's the only one I've ever had a blast in. It's manual only too). Mazdas only fast car after this year is manual only and the rx8 was a complete dog with the auto. Toyota doesn't have shit right now (changing next year of course). Evo is manual or dsg only. Sti is manual only as far as I know (haven't looked in years).

So who got that memo besides sissy Nissan (although consider the Z as a GT)? And next year Subaru and Toyota? But Toyota is the bland sellout company with no current sports cars for quite some time now. Honda is the new Toyota IMO.

Oh and yes current Honda sucks ass. There's not a car they sell at the moment that I'd even consider. All real enthusiasts with hondas know that only the dumb fanboys don't see it.

Actually I take that back a little. If I wanted an entry level luxury car I'd consider a TSX 6MT and if I wanted a bigger luxury car I'd look at the TL SH AWD 6MT.
