Seriously you have 40 and 50 year olds showing up to Scion shows and events with their Scions? Wow!

This is going to make or break Scion. Toyota has been trying to get this company off the ground for a couple of years. The FT would have been better at the launch of the company rather than now, but alas.

I'm interested to see how this will play out seeing as how vary few people take Scion as a serious company, including some the enthusiasts on this forum.

Yes it is a shame it isn't heading to North America under the Toyota brand. However if you were seriously surprised by Toyotas' decision to sell the FT under the Scion name then clearly you don't know the companies or their targets very well. More and more signs were being pointed to Scion rather than Toyota as they have drawn car out.

Am I disappointed? Not really. Perhaps it was time for Toyota to toss the defibrillator and throw some high voltage lines on Scion. If the FT performs as well as I think it's going to I'll gladly represent one under the Scion badge.

yes.... once you are a car person you will always be a car person.... at the end of the day a car is a car .. anyone that doesn't understand that has a lot to learn.

Sure but a car person/car enthusiast ≠ a person looking at buying a Scion at that age point of 40-50s. Sure a Miata owner, or a Porsche owner, or a Ferrari owner, or a BMW M3 owner...etc. But a car enthusiast would never look towards a Scion. The Scions I have driven are the most uninspiring, unfun, not enjoyable, bland cars I have experienced. Not sure why a 40-50 year old who enjoys cars would even look in their direction. :iono:

Not sure what you mean by: "once you are a car person you will always be a car person" and then your following sentence of "at the end of the day a car is a car." So is a car a car? Or is a car something meant to be enjoyed and appreciated for more than just a typical car getting you to work and back home?

My boss's husband used to drive tC (prob around mid 40's)... til got into huge wreck (it wasn't his fault).

86er 04-13-2011 08:27 PM

REALLY? Really? So Confused Is Obviously Nurotic (SCION)
This has everything to do with "badging". It's now about weak investment into a test product that Toyota is NOT willing to "badge" the car with their logo.

I car is a car.. it is what you make of it.. I have owned car in the 60K price range all the way down to the 18k price range.. all of them I have found enjoyment in driving them. Why because I do not settle for what a car can do out of the factory. Something can always be improved.

And a lot of the 40 - 50 year olds that drive scions do it because these are fun cars to drive. (not saying this is you) but some people are more into what car they are in, then enjoying the car that they are driving .. and that normal comes from people that haven't had that much driving time with a wide range of cars.

I don't think people understand what it's like to own a car universally HATED by the community, for no more than childish and almost irrelevant reasons.

Simply put: A true car enthusiast will actually find and praise a cars' attributes instead of ragging on it's faults.

fernan2 04-13-2011 08:40 PM

The car will be the same car, just with differnt name and different badge. how can that hurt the cars quality? Its just stupid to think that.

86er 04-13-2011 08:48 PM

Toyota just isn't going to start and finish the funding of the re-entry into the "sports car" segment (aka Supra) therefore they are unwilling to fund for the badging and the Toyota brand of quality. Let's face it. . .Scion takes this and it will be a hand off from Toyota with wink and a nod. IMO the FT86 will now never see the light of day with a Toyota badge. Toyota will stick with demograhic and let FT86 choke on its own rope.

A true car enthusiast will give respect where respect is earned!

What are some attributes with the Scion xA, xB, xD, iQ and tC?

What don't you respect about those two cars ? xB's are great cars .. and many in the US and Japan will tell you this .. the xA is a great commuter car .. and perfect for someone looking (when it cam out ) new car at a very affordable price.

Actually, those are both pretty sweet cars. To start, they are roomy as all hell, the interior is very nice. The price point is perfect for low budget driving. They get good gas mileage and dont choke on themselves by being too weak. At first i like the looks of the xb (until it got curves) and the xa grew on me after a while. Almost got a 2nd gen xb.

note: this would be my parents car, i was 15 when we test drove it

OldSkoolToys 04-13-2011 08:55 PM

I hope we get more information, other than "oh hey, its gonna be scion, gonna be called the FT-S...thats it!" Like...I unno, weight....official power, etc. Not gonna happen though, so meh.

Why FT-S? FR-S seems more proper.

what? Toyota is in the sports car segment, the IS-F and LFA say hello as you see them zooming by. (assuming you were saying toyota isnt going to be back in the sports car segment if not, my bad)

This thread is humorous now, i was mad at first but im calm now - let's just wait and see what this car ends up being. It's possible Toyota actually wants this to be the flagship car for the Scion brand (this is how im keeping my interior dreams alive)

Great in what aspect? I don't like the xB just as much as I don't like the Kia Soul, the Nissan Cube and Honda Element! They are ugly cars w/0 appeal. They are underpowered for a reason; to get good gas mileage.

You can't really respect a car that looks horrific!

So much for sports car representation.

Well that mostly due to numbers i'd say. Lexus ran a limited production 500 cars. Compare this to the fact that ferrari has sold 55,000 (minus approx 3,000 for spontaneous supercar campfires) cars in the last 10 years alone... :bonk:

enc0re 04-13-2011 09:07 PM

So it's Scion then. Well, we've been expecting this for a while.

Obvious con: almost certainly no factory installed LSD. That basically adds $1K to the price right there.

Possible pro: to date every Scion has been a hatchback. Crossing my fingers for a liftback version.

Ryephile 04-13-2011 09:11 PM

Having the car be a Scion makes me feel like I'm too old to be seen driving the car. I'll get over it though if the driving experience is sublime, however.

xantonin 04-13-2011 09:16 PM

This thread EXPLODED and I think it's funny.

Unfortunately I can't keep up with you all. Someone PM me a summary when this is all resolved, mmmk?

Why not just stick with your Exige? Or is that your track day only car?

Hopefully afternoon of 4/20 we will know more. If not, we will have to wait until the fall.

Ford of all companies does a terrible job translating their euro models to the US. Look at the focus.... yeesh.

Don't know about the 300ZX, but the best versions of the Mk3 and Mk4 Supras were the JDM versions.

So you don't like the look of those cars.. thats your right to like or dis like the car based on looks.. and as for under powered. you hit it right on the head... small engines for good gas ..

if you can't respect that then you might not be a car person ..

scion ft86

Toyota does have a bad reputation in America, it had the shit ripped out of in all the late night shows and they have been advertising with the scion for a while a sports car/drifter with Tanner Foust and formula d. this move is purely for marketing purposes I believe, as long as it isn't a scion over here in Australia or in Japan I don’t think it will be a problem, Jonno.

What are you talking about? This isn't a forum for Prius' and Insights. Its a forum (mostly) filled with racing enthusiasts. We don't respect car's for being gas savers, unless said gas savers are engineered for spirited driving and said gas saving doesn't come at the expense of making the engine feel like you got a boulder under the hood that won't respond to your input and takes 5 years to reach 3k RPM.

THIS

Fate seems sealed as a Scion in the U.S.

With a Subaru version also on the way, highly unlikely there will be a Toyota version in the U.S. Just like all the other Scions except the tC, it will be re branded Toyota model from Japan. Who cares what the US brands it though, swap the badges to JDM Toyota badges, JDM "Toyota" parts will still fit....I'd be more concerned about whether it will be NA or not.

xantonin 04-13-2011 09:40 PM

I was hoping there would be a "special edition" or "limited edition" of this car. Something like the NISMO 370Z, or the Mustangs.

But I don't think that will happen with Scion.

On a random note, I was able to price out a Scion tC to $40,000 on their website by adding all the accessories last year.

That should NEVER happen, especially considering they were non to low performance gains.

Dimman 04-13-2011 09:44 PM

Scion, sigh... Better go find out where my local idiot-filled dealer is. This is only in the event of the Subaru version is stupid expensive (but a couple local Subie dealers are real ****s...)

I wonder if the Scion is going to have a 180 hp (stockish) FB25 in it?

How'd you price a car that starts at $19k up to $40k?

I added all the neon lights, underglow, foot area glow, door sill glow, and flashy trim.

Also added the TRD oil cap for extra HP!

I literally added every single add-on they had at the time. The new tC's have less.

I will let you know that the 1ZZ-FE gas saver in the other 9th Gen Corollas' respond way the hell faster then my 2ZZ-GE screamer from idle to 4000rpm (daily driving stuff). It obviously has more useable torque in that range.

You've never seen the RS (Release Series) of "limited" tC have you... It was only cosmetically different then the regular tC mind you, so I see your point.
