If it makes you feel any better I work in a professional setting also. My boss came into my cubicle last week to talk about my car. She thought it was some sort of expensive super car when we all know it isn't. I've received numerous compliments on the FR-S. All these people didn't care if it was a scion and I don't either. Sometimes a beautiful car is a beautiful car no matter the brand.

As someone who is probably older than most of the FR-S owners out there, I'm 51 and got the car less than a year ago, I can tell you that I love my car. I've had muscle cars in the past and a boat load of "family" cars, but this car gives me genuine pleasure to daily drive. I haven't done too many mods... Yet, but I still love the way she handles and the few things I have done give her a bit more giddy up. Granted, there are a lot more twisties around here, but I also love the flat out punching the pedal and feeling her response. Do what you must, but I for one, will never regret buying my FR-S. JMHO

Wanted to quote the bold because it hit home for me...

I probably "researched" this car for over a year before purchasing it. I test drove it multiple times and had more than enough cash reserves but could never pull the trigger...

What I eventually ended up realizing was that the main reason I kept putting off purchasing the car was because I was so concerned with what others would think if I bought the car as an automatic... And god forbid if I went with a Scion instead of a Subaru, I was half-convinced by those around me that the world might end!

One day it kind of just hit me though:

(1) If I was going to base my car purchase off of what everyone was telling me was best, I was going to end up in another Accord or a luxury vehicle with features I didn't care about for the rest of my life...

(2) No matter what car I bought someone would have an issue with my decision ("That car is too slow", "That car is ugly", "Why did you choose that color?", "You should have bought it new!", "You should have bought it used!", "No turbo? LOL!")

(3) Given the above... My decision should be based entirely one what gives me the most utility (satisfaction).

Different scenario to yours, but once again just trying to hit home how when the light bulb clicks, you're going to look back and laugh at caring so much about what others thought of your car.

Exactly!!! I'm older but I'm also not a sheep that follows along with the crowd. My FR-S gets noticed, again not that I bought it for that, but it's a nice little perk. I put a full Aero kit on mine which gives the car a nice look and feel when driving. I have hung around other car people and don't really give a crap about having a Scion,or rather what others think. Bottom line, I love my car and don't give a damn what other think. Be your own person.

Just kidding around, but I just don't get why fans of the FR-S WOULDN'T dig an e36 325i or 325ci. Is it the newer BMWs that folks don't dig? My '93 engine was flippin' bullet-proof. Other than oil and filters, the only things up front I had to change in 243,000 miles were one water pump, one alternator, and one coil. That inline 6 was one of the sweetest things I've ever heard or driven.

Just my opinion. What's everyone's beef with the Bavarians? I'm curious..

Thanks.. and best..

BArry

I love Beemers. Just don't want do disconnect my arm at the elbow to have to pay for it lol.

At 51 one you just barley qualify for the older crowd discount in here. You would be very surprised at how many of us are even older that that.

Especially Tcoat and Ultramaroon. They're like a hundred. Million.

Out of curiosity, which model did you drive? The newest BMWs I've driven were both 2009 325xi models,(AWD) one auto and one manual. The manual transmission clutch made our FR-S feel sloppy; you needed to be REALLY precise with that. I preferred the balance and handling of my '93 325i (RWD) VERY much, but both of the 2009s were very responsive, nice and tight, and heads and shoulders over our SciYoBarus in fit, finish, and cabin isolation. You felt connected to the road, very much so, but not every little pebble and nick in the surface like you do in the FR-S. Calling it the "Ultimate Sailing Machine" is creative and whimsical, but way overly harsh. For the "Ultimate Sailing Machine," I refer you to the Mercedes 560SL. I have one of those, too. It handles like a really well-built '73 Olds Delta 88, but man, it's the most beautiful car in the world, and I smile every time we put the top down and hit the road. Crazy fast in a straight line, but don't try to turn... the car just keeps going straight.

Which BMW turned you off so much?

Thanks..

Barry

Drove the 2015 X1 that is based on the prior generation 3 series, from what I have read. Felt just alittle sharper than my wife's Honda CRV, and not nearly as precise as the BRZ in handling. But you are right, did not feel every pebble in the road like the BRZ and the X1 was smoother and quieter inside.
