I'd just claim he refused to sell it without the gift payment and I was too stupid to realize the negatives... I doubt PP will go after his account UNLESS he has a history of gift payments.

Did you pay through Paypal via credit card? My dad got scammed for a $2100 exhaust through Paypal but luckily paid with his credit card. Paypal actually kinda sucks at helping you get back stolen money. From what I understand they will freeze the seller's account and repay you the money from their account, except that most scammers know this and empty their Paypal account after the sale, meaning that Paypal usually can't do anything. My dad called the credit card company and had a charge back within hours.

I make it a point never to pay anyone through paypal from a bank account.
