If you're relying (and trying to argue) on better Aero at 48 mph then I think you have other issues we need to cover.

I don't think any of us would say that the lip is going to provide more than a microscopic performance benefit at autocross speeds, but rules are rules and you have to stick to them.

The fact that the lip is in the genuine accessory catalog is great, but it's up to someone to decide if it's "OK" considering it's in the STI section and I thought the "tuner" company parts (TRD, Nismo, STI, etc) were disallowed.

I don't really have a horse in this race, so it doesn't much matter to me... but the STI lip looks awesome on Justin's car and might help save the front end from some cone strikes (which is why I had the old STI lip on mine, lol)

In 3rd gear at 67 mph coming into a braking zone is where that lip helps you.

But even if we discount that, what's the point of rules if we're not going to follow them? If you're trying to be at the pointy end you should avoid doing stuff to your car unless you're positive you can win with the SEB and/or PC, and you *need* what that part gives you (see: Manic tunes for JCW).

justinco 12-06-2016 01:32 PM

The rules are being followed. You can dream up all these performance benefits or spirit of the rule or whatever, but this case has an explicit allowance.

Here you go...

Thanks Doug,

There was some debate on one of the BRZ/FRS forums in an STX rules thread on whether these were legal or not. I just wanted to get some clarification on my thoughts.

Is it ok to share this on the forums so others can benefit and clear up some of the misconceptions?

Justin

Hi, Justin,

Yes, it is a fair assumption that the STI under spoiler is allowed per 2016 Solo Rules section 14.2.F.2 (page 78). However, I would never say it is “clear” that it’s allowed. (I have never seen a protest committee that wanted to rule a competitor was non-compliant.)

But I agree with you – the Solo Rules allow it. Even the description says it “gives the BRZ a mean, ground-hugging look”; nothing about improved stability at highway speeds or anything like that.

You could ask for an official clarification from the SEB, but I really don’t think it’s necessary. It could take months to get an answer. www.sebscca.com or www.soloeventsboard.com

Hope this helps. I’ll be glad to discuss this further.

Subject: Solo Street Touring rules question

Hey Doug,

I had a question regarding a rule for Street Touring. The rule is below which is part of section 14.2.

F. Addition of spoilers, splitters, rear wings, bumper covers, valances, side skirts, and non-functional scoops/vents is allowed provided that either:
1. It is a production part which is standard or optional equipment of a US model of the vehicle. (“Model” is defined in Section 12.)
2. It is listed in the vehicle manufacturer’s US accessory catalog for that vehicle for normal highway use. This does not allow for parts sold through a manufacturer’s performance catalog (e.g., Ford Racing, HPD, Mazdaspeed, Mopar Performance, Mugen, NISMO, SPT, TRD, etc). Parts must be installed as directed by the manufacturer. Exact replicas, including weight, from alternate sources are also permitted.

I installed a BRZ STi front under-spoiler (Subaru part) for my BRZ which is in STX. It comes from the Subaru accessory catalog titled "2017 BRZ Accessories."

http://www.subaru.com/content/dam/su...ccessories.pdf

Since this part is in an accessory catalog (not a performance catalog) and has been installed as directed by the manufacturer, it should be legal to use. Is this a fair assumption? I imagine if there was a protest against it, there is clear evidence in this rule that says it would be legal (because it is part of an accessory catalog, regardless if it is an "STi" branded part).

Thanks!
Justin

Doug is unofficial. Want me to pull up the email where he stated the TRD parts were not legal on 2013s? :bellyroll:

Real protests are even more fun... I got pulled into one years ago at a regional event (tires weren't legal). It's why I'm annoying about pointing out things that may not be legal, the process is brutal.

At this point you've established enough reason to warrant your confidence, whether everyone agrees or not. You've also stated you're open to being proven wrong if it comes to that.

I admit, if the lip is in the performance catalog, I wouldn't be running it myself (as I read it, even an oil filter in that catalog might run afoul of the rules)... And it does look great.

edit: I keep interpreting the phrase "This does not allow..." differently every time I read that line, but I think I may be settling on the side of there being a missing 'only' in that (i.e. parts allowable elsewhere and also in the performance catalog are allowed; parts only available through the performance catalog are not.) Which is where you are. Yay for ever-so-slightly ambiguous wording.

Just a point of order, 14.2.F is discussing bodywork, so the phrasing about the performance catalog ONLY applies to those kinds of parts. The legality of other parts in the performance catalog is judged by the applicable allowances - in the case of an oil filter, this is dealt with by the stock class allowances.

2nd autocross on the BRZ this past weekend. Cold early on and hard/old tires, but still fun.

Finally got to run this thing with new tires. 7th in PAX out of ~85 or so, could have driven it better. Felt like it took a few runs for the tires to come in. A friend in his freshly de-TRD'd D-street FRS smoked everyone in PAX :o

It is a ProClip base with a mount for my tablet. I have 2 mounts, one for phone and one for tablet to switch in and out. It is pretty awesome, actually.

Are you using the re71r as your everyday tire as well? I still have a few more months with my Blizzaks, but looking ahead I'm torn between the re71r and the PSS for my summer time tire with occasional autocross/time trial duty.

Not usually no. I put the stock wheels/tires on after a race event unless I have back to back weekends of racing. Which happens a lot in the summer actually.

The PSS would be the better tire for what you are looking to do and last a lot longer than the RE71R. I had the PSS on my Lexus IS-F and it is a pretty good tire (even autocrossing).

Guess I have been to busy to update this in a while. Got the engine bolt-ons installed and new tune is about finished up. Seats in as well...see how things work at the College station event this weekend.

First national event for the new BRZ. The drive to Texas was the worst, but the event itself was great. Had bad grip issues on the first day, just like at Nats last year in the FRS :( However, this time I was able to get it figured out by day 2 and the car was sticking again. Unfortunately the slow start on day 1 put me back a ways in the standings. Glad I made some progress with the setup though, should be ready to rock for the spring Pro & Tour in Lincoln.

Had my first event on the new Rival S 1.5, I liked them a lot. Much "better" feeling than the old version.

Also, swapped out my custom exhaust for a new Tanabe Concept G. Very nice system for the price and sounds pretty good.

AP brakes installed, among other things, and got it back for alignment and corner balance.

Interestingly, my BRZ still weighs more than my FRS did. BRZ is at 2612 with 1/4 tank of gas. The FRS was 2595 with 1/4 tank.

The weird thing is, the FRS did not have the AP brakes (-20lbs), or the 2nd race seat (-15lbs), or the lighter exhaust (-15lbs).

So, not sure where the BRZ picks up the extra weight. I thought it would at least be under 2600#...sigh. Oh well...time to hit the dyno tonight :)

invaliduser 05-03-2017 04:18 PM

I think I remember reading that the 2017's would weigh a bit more due to additional sound deadening and the move to an aluminum intake manifold.

Could very well be the scales. Happens all the time at national events and road racing events. Different scales will read differently. Even the same scale over time messes up.

It was the 3R scales, only been a couple months but yea, I hear you.

The scales at SCR were way off from the 3R weights.

Ahh, yea the manifold, that could be some of it. Plus, my BRZ has foglights and just the overall nicer materials in the interior.
