Heaviest Miata with the power retractable top and an auto is about 2627lbs. I hope they can hit that target.

I don't see why not? but S2k was pretty heavy (2800lbs), so I guess, I'm not sure. lol

But both the Miata and S2K were convertibles. Since the F/T/R-86/S will be a coupe it will have inherent rigidity that means less extra weight for chassis bracing etc... I hope. If this thing weighs 2500lbs I will be very, very happy.

Hm... 2500lbs might be too wishful thinking. BUT if they really did 2500lbs, you know how many people will buy this car? 2600~2750lbs would be realistic number to me.

I'd see here people wanting to spend the more money for a little more refined, torquey powertrain, and maybe a nicer interior. The people who are buying it to drive around on the street everyday.

But if the NA version is just a cheapo version and the turbo is the only choice for uprated suspension etc etc, I'll be pissed.
Furthermore, if the turbo version is built so stout like people are wanting, so it has 'giant-killer' capability...

The main focus of this car is the NA version. I don't think there will be anything "cheapo" about it. All a lot of people are asking for is a more powerful turbo version. They'd of course have to pay more for it, because with it comes a stouter transmission and beefier brakes, perhaps beefier suspension too. Nothing to affect you buying your NA version. In fact, if you want to drive on the track all the time, it could work out to your benefit, because if they make a track version like they said, you could have your NA car, with beefier brakes and suspension (from the turbo version) and for cheaper than the standard NA car. What's to bitch about?

The only place this car will be slaying giants (in the beginning of course) is on the circuit, not on the highway.

Same here. I however expect it to be around the 2600lb mark. I will be very disappointed if Toyota makes this thing anywhere over 2650lbs (Na... say 2800lbs tops for the turbo?). The concept car is TINY. Make it work!!!

How much did the last Celica GT-S weigh? I seem to remember being surprised at how little it weighed when it came out but can't seem to remember the number.

Edmunds has it at 2500 even for 2005 manual and 2580 for automatic

Yeah, but you can carry 1ZZ or 2ZZ engine by yourself, they're pretty light... but boxer engine is different story. I wouldn't call it lightweight, I have taken out my Impreza engine (twice) and they're pretty heavy.

If Toyota stays away (or lets us choose a trim level that stays away) from 19" wheels, power seats, automatics and all that crap, they should be able to hit 2600 lbs no prob. Please.

yeah, but last Celica's safety and new car safety is different. That's why older cars are lighter... usually

Can't have changed too much in 5 years, and the Miata can meet them so... I still want a 2600 lbs F/T/R-S/86.

Matador 07-10-2010 10:09 PM

Last gen Celicas were 24xx for the GT, 25xx for the GT-S

The 2ZZ is a 95kg engine, just over 200lbs. The EJs don't top 280lbs IIRC. Plus there is no guarantee that the boxer will be an EJ series engine.

I sure hope they have an option away from that stuff..I don't see a 20k base model having power seats and 19'' anyway.

Yeah, but dealers love all that crap. $$$ for them, performance be damned... Even if there is a no-frills option I think it will be a fight with dealers to bring them in. They only like stripped, base models to put the prices in the ads to bring people to them. But they absolutely HATE selling them.

If Boxer engine isn't in this thing, than I'm out! :bellyroll: I kid, I kid.

Are you talkin' bout w fluids or without? If w fluids then yes, it does top over 280lbs for 2.5L, not sure bout the 2L ones. Don't forget, EJ engine may have 2 cylinders each side... but they're hellova big pistons.

70NYD 07-11-2010 02:47 AM

this thing would have a 2L but wouldnt it?? i seem to remember that the reason EJ's are so heavy to carry cus they are awkward shape when it comes to manual lifting

Here's a pic of my engine, when I took it out

As you can see instead of vertical, it horizontal, so it's somewhat easier to lift it.

70NYD 07-11-2010 10:29 AM

i know what a H4 looks like, but also notice how the only place to pick the engine by is the tappet covers (which are far apart) where as a I4 you can pick it up by the tappet cover but it is substantially closer together (making it easier) V blocks are easiest :)

Well that tells you, you don't know anything bout H4. IDK how many engine you have lifted (both hands & lifter), but I don't remember v engine been easy to lift. I have lifted 454 big block and block it self was bitch to lift. After rebuilt it, using the lifter it was still bitch to lift, cuz they didn't make area to hook it to (so had to bolt em on). While H4, when you remove the exhaust header, you can lift it by headcovers/headers. If you wanna use lifter, you can use any part of H4 to lift it: Manifold, near alternator, lil bit below the throttle, if you take off the manifold, there's few hook area. While I4 engines are vertical and don't have much place to put your hands on (I, myself only lifted three I4 engines, so IDK too much).

MtnDrvr86 07-11-2010 06:38 PM

2 seats with decent leg and headroom plus a "token" back seat for storage and insurance purposes.

- front-midship boxer, 2.0 liters and 180-220 hp stock.

- available 6-speed manual close-geared on the first 5 with the 6th a little taller for highway cruising.

- 3 trim levels: sr5 - bare bones hardtop-only base model. gts - sports model with drivetrain/suspension upgrades over base. glx - touring model with premium soundsystem and sunroof etc... (necessary to sell enough of the model to encourage further production).

- no gimmicky styling cues, retardedly expensive to replace lights, ugly 20lb oversized wheels that necessitate expensive tires.

- weight is under 2750lb for fully-featured top of the line model. weight for base models is substantially less.

- TRD support not limited to fancy grille inserts and appearance accessories.

from a comment on jalopnik about the fr-s patent...modified by me, perhaps a little more realistic from what the guy wanted, and more what i would like

oh i didnt express my self properly. i meant picking it up strictly by hand, and i have never picked up a engine by a manifold (intake or exhaust..) every I4 i picked up was by the bottom and rest it against me while carrying (cradeled from front/end by forearms, one side by torso and holding it by the bottom of crank case) its easy for me that way. i have never picked up a H4 by hand. i was refering to more of a 2.5L V6 (150cu") rather than a 454 (good work for picking that up btw)

Unless it's Kei car engines. They're hella light. I think, one of my dog is heavier than some of the Kei car engines (3cylinders ones). :bellyroll:

Doty0588 07-12-2010 11:37 PM

Hahaha good point, and with regular engines, I have just done it exactly as 70NYD, just use proper lifting technique, with your legs.

70NYD 07-12-2010 11:54 PM

yep allways with legs only,or your end up with herniated diskes :p (i know 2 ppl that have herniated disks, one guys is so bad that u can see it throguh his skin clearly.. ugh)

Doty0588 07-13-2010 12:55 AM

Ugh that just makes life completely miserable. My mother is a physical therapist so I used to see that kind of stuff all the time.

overvolting 07-13-2010 03:21 AM

You young'ins have it so easy these days.
In my days you had to lift big block cadillac engines that weighed more than a whole car of today and carry it to motor school every day in the rain, uphill both ways and twice on sundays.
Hecknabbit even one of the steel doors off a buick weight more than a whole kei car.

And we never complained about THEY TOOK OOOR JAAAWBS!

The key is to put it all in your groin and your back. Take your legs totally out of the equation. Lift with your lower back in a jerking, twisting motion. haha (family guy)

seconded.

That train crash, though... ouch!

futureOwner 08-01-2010 02:02 AM

Well, they are not going to make a track edition, that is up to porsche. I want one with a good stereo and an engine. That would make me happy, I don't need power seats or anything since I can live without them. Paying $$$ for your own laziness just isn't smart to do.

nate89 08-01-2010 02:38 AM

Anything I'm going to replace I want to be as cheap as possible. That means no power seats (unless Toyota puts in recarros like the subie)
and small cheap wheels.

70NYD 08-01-2010 03:01 AM

power seats are nice in a luxury car or a cruiser, but they weigh a heap. BONUS is if the wheels are HUGE (19 or 18) then they can be easily sold off as they are bound to be lightish and stylish
