oh yeah, can't wait to see the first ill-fitting overpriced gurney ripoffs be put into circulation. I especially like the cf mesh cuz it gives off that "matches nothing but ppl think it's fast" vibe :D

srsly: if that very same gurney (which I already ordered, btw) came in carbon, I'd have it painted to match.

cmspooner 05-16-2013 10:05 PM

I'm wondering if this would help keep the back of the car cleaner...I pick up so much dirt on my rear, and I was thinking that maybe if the airflow was disrupted the dirt would no be sucked in and deposited on the back bumper area.

If there's any reduction at all, it's negligible. With the flap, my back bumper area still accumulates more dirt than most other areas.

Damn...I was hoping that to justify what will otherwise be a completely aesthetic purchase

Basti 05-17-2013 12:27 PM

I don't think it's gonna be purely aesthetic. This stuff seems to have worked in some way in racing before so why should the Toyobaru be an exception?

Every car I can think of gets most dirt on its rear end by upturned windstreams at the rear of the car. Only difference in Coupés (and thus reason for most not having a wiper) is that it doesn't get sprayed over the rearview window but sticks to the tail instead.
Since the Gurney isn't desinged to magically stream the air down right behind the car I wouldn't even anticipate it to influence the dirt buildup.

Try a diffusor, which keeps the air from below the car down, instead.
This is where mud is, it doesn't fall from the sky and rest on the rear of the car but it comes from below and gets dispersed by the tires and upward-forcing air.
I have the BRZ stock diffusor installed which actually seems to be helping. The stock rear fender almost screams "ride up on me" to any particles from the street ;)

BTW: 3 Gurney Flaps for Germany are already at customs :)

I fabbed my own Gurny Flap for my NSX. Pics coming soon ;).

Got my STI Gurney Flap installed and very happy with it (will do STI sticker later), posting pic in case anyone wanted to see what it looks on red:

Attachment 37807
Attachment 37808

I like how it gives the BRZ spoiler additional contrast.

Basti 05-19-2013 03:38 AM

Question: how's its finish? Like black paint or rather like the lower parts of the rear fender i.e. unpainted?
I need to know whether to call the paintshop

I don't think it's finished at all. Just black plastic. I wouldn't paint it, it's pretty flexible so the paint would probably crack and flake off.

Basti 05-20-2013 03:00 AM

I see. Guess that means foil wont work either

Yeah once I had it on and confirmed that I really liked it, I drilled and attached it permanently.

Yeah it is just black flexible plastic, so paint probably would not hold up well unless you use some type of flexible paint.

May sound stupid, but can anyone take a picture from the inside as if you were looking out of the rear view mirror. Thanks

You can't really see it from the inside. At least I can't.

I was just curious, because I know back when I had my Evo, I drove a friends SE that had a gurney flap and it was just enough to annoy me. Although that was on an elevated wing...

Basti 05-20-2013 01:46 PM

If anything, i think it'd help.
Had a bigger spoiler on my old car that helped me see where it actually ended.
No such luck in my brz

LeeMaster 05-21-2013 02:36 AM

Hmm, in Japanparts.com it is only $80 for the gurney flap, is it worth it?

Basti 05-21-2013 04:34 PM

Guess you get what you pay for: it's not much, kinda like a piece of plastic. Just like the trd sound changer is just a bunch of tubes.
Nonetheless, such little things may be exactly what one may need in order to make a car perfect.
Or anything, for that matter

Only if you buy it with something else. They will kill you on shipping. I ordered mine with JDM underpanels and basically got it shipped for free.

I really think it finished the rear end of the car nicely. It makes the OEM spoiler worth having imo.

How soon is "soon"?!!?

Basti 05-24-2013 12:21 PM

I see now, just got it outta the packaging... Seems as though one might get a piece of rubber like that at the local hardware store but well... Maybe it'll look better mounted.

Basti 05-24-2013 02:08 PM

Just for those eager to see the gurney on all kinds of Toyobaru color's here are my 10cents:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...ps47e44413.jpg

IMHO it doesn't work so well on black.

Basti 06-04-2013 01:58 PM

Sorry for double post, dunno whether this has already been mentioned but what size drill bit did you do the holes for the nipple with?

I think it works if you have the rear underspoiler and maybe the rest of the STI bottomline kit. Otherwise if that's your only aero mod then yeah, I could see it not looking so hot on black.

Thanks for the pic! Got any more from different angles? I would prefer a shot directly from behind, either crouched or standing, if you have one.

Basti 06-04-2013 05:15 PM

To me it's more about the rubber... um... "color".
If it were painted then yeah, unpainted always looks cheap to me, no matter where.
Still, one can pull the Gurney off even w/o any aero mods at all, it's not really a huge eyecatcher. It rather fits in nicely, gives the car a finishing touch.
The Toyobaru could have handled a bigger spoiler anyway, silimar to the one on an Integra Type R or even a Supra (though that's too big already)

Anyway, I got another image you might find interesting. Since we haven't really seen the sun since the day I installed it/took the pic, this is all I have ATM. Includes under spoiler ;)

I agree, it doesn't stand out if unpainted and can work with completely stock bodies since everyone's car comes with stock black unpainted pieces (rear diffuser, BRZ front bumper plastic, side mirrors, antenna). Anyway, the real reason I'm writing an on-topic response is because I'm off-topic curious: what kind of wheels do you have? Speedline Corse Turini?

chanomatik 06-04-2013 07:02 PM

Thanks for the additional pic! Your under spoiler looks ewww dirty!

I think I may paint-match the gurney, but leave the rest of the aero pieces the gloss black... or paint them all! I'm a REBEL! :bonk:

Basti 06-05-2013 03:08 AM

The rims are from Subaru's catalogue, corse whatever something.
And you won't be able to paint the gurney, it's just rubber. Believe me, if i coulda had it painted, i woulda.

So how did any of you drill those holes? Japanese ja-nai ;)

I cut my pegs in half so they stop just before touching the spoiler (spoiler isn't drilled). The tape is plenty strong to hold it in place and I always have the option to revert to stock without ugly holes in my spoiler. I put the pegs there only as a theft deterrent. And if I drilled instead, it's not like that would stop anyone from being able to rip the flap off. :p

Basti 06-05-2013 06:29 AM

I've been thinking the exact same thing just that I'd use the pegs for optical reasons, the holes being fugly and all.
Though I think the pegs might be considered more for their probably keeping the ends of the Gurney from detaching over time... That's why I even consider drilling for them at all....

cantaloupe 06-07-2013 05:51 PM

I've never drilled holes into my car...is the tape adhesive good enough?

I had a 3M taped trunk lip for my WRX that held on perfectly. I hear this one for the gurney is good, too. I definitely don't want to drill holes onto my spoiler, but I would in less visible places like for the front lip and side skirts.

Basti 06-07-2013 06:40 PM

Turns out i didn', either ;)

Not sure if I'll install it on the car, but it does require two holes to be drilled into the wing and clips mounted, from what I could translate from the instructions (in Japanese).

Big disappointment. :mad0260:

I wish japanparts.com had disclosed that information. However, they shipped super fast!

Damn! mine comes without badge and clips!:mad0260::mad0260::mad0260:

DSOmegaX 06-14-2013 07:45 PM

No drilling required. The tape holds just fine. Just put some adhesive promoter to be conservative. Cut the bolts to half size and they will snugly fit into the holes. What I did on mine was buy a replica metal sti badge (matches the badge on the lip and side skirts) to replace the sticker.

Basti 06-15-2013 03:32 AM

That sticker went straight to my dashboard.
I didn't want that strip on the outside of my car cuz frankly, it doesn't look all that good

I didn't want to pay for the price for the official one, so I made my own. It cost ~$25, and took me 30 minutes to trim and attach.

I picked up an m3 trunk spoiler and trimmed it down to fit the BRZ.
