Can the BlackVue with power magic kill my battery?

Today, my car won't start and it looks like the battery is kinda dead. When I opened my automatic door (and the stop lights are blinking) to get into the car, the blackvue started to shutdown. I found that peculiar.

I turned the key in 2nd position, everything is fine. I turn the key, and my dashboard starts to flicker, and the engine cranks a few times but it won't start. Once I release the ignition position, the dashboard lights return to normal.

So, I'm guessing my battery is near dead? I have set my power magic to stop at 11.8V (the maximum). I'm guessing that Blackvue shut down when I opened my doors because that triggered the battery to drop below the 11.8V? But then shouldn't the battery be able to start at that voltage?

I find it so hard to believe that the dashcam drained all my battery. And even so, if power magic works correctly, it shutdown when it reached 11.8V.

Unfortunately no one but his coworker stopped to check on him. I feel bad for not stopping, however you were right, he was able to get out and stand up under his own power.

Originally had mine connected via the glovebox 12V but yesterday got a mate to help me do the proper install. I'm no good at the DIY stuff but thankfully everything went well and it works correctly. Thanks for the excellent guide F1!

For those interested in quick release/repositioning of the cameras after putting down their 3M tape an alternative i've found is to instead use 3M Dual Lock tape. It's similar to velcro but it snaps into place when it locks instead of gripping.

This was useful for me because my dashcam is an Itronics which doesn't have a unlock botton from the windshield mount, it requires tedious unscrewing which is too much time and effort everytime you start/stop the car and want to stow the dashcam. First pic is the windshield with the dual lock tape, and the second pic is the dashcam with the tape. They snap on/off nicely and quickly and it holds strong while driving.

An example of the strength:

@F1point4

Ok so the power magic pro simply provides power when the engine is off so you can continue to record. Technically I can get that and use this as the dash cam or any dash cam for that matter.

I am truly amazed at what all gets filmed with these dash cams.

Some drivers should probably not be driving.

Here's a review of the DR500: http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2013/3/...ar-camera.html

Has anyone mounted one of these under the 3rd brake light yet? I feel like it would be a good spot for a cam like this to be used as surveillance.

Great guide thanks, I bought the DR500GW-HD, it's currently only hooked up via 12V because waiting on my low profile Add-A-Circuit from ebay. Anyone doing this should buy off ebay for both fuses and the add-a-circuit, a-a-c locally sells for $15/ea... bought off ebay for $2.50/ea :bonk:

PMPB 08-09-2013 09:28 PM

Sorry, I've looked really hard for an answer to this, so I apologise if it's been answered already.

Does anybody have a DIY install guide for powering a dashcam from power in the head liner? I don't have a powered rear view mirror, so I'm assuming there is a disconnected and unused 12v feed in the head liner?

Thanks!

@F1point4 Thanks for the write. In the process of getting the DR500 and was able to source some 2 AMP fuses which should work nicely.

Yes, actually I think you should use that fuse (something smaller than 7.5A). Everything else will be the same.

sorry to bump up and old thread but i am going to do this soon so i would just like to clarify one thing.

instead of the 3amp fuse, can i use a 5 with a 7.5 instead? the shops here dont sell 3amps. only 5 and above. thanks!

so.. like this

will there by any consequences of using the 5A instead of the 3A?

I am running the season 2 version.

thanks!

whatever original fuse is attached to fuse box, i used two 7.5 fuses for Blackvue. doesn't really matter what blackvue you use but mine is DR500

My DR400 hates any card (all are class 10) over 16gb. I have 2 different 32GB cards and when the device powers on it just cycles over and over and never starts recording. The 16GB card, it just boots right up and starts recording.

Oh well.

You would need another Power Magic Box and you would want to use a different fuse if possible.

That is, if you don't want the "parking" feature which is one of its main features with these units. Would be a waste if you bought a $300+ BlackVue and not use all of its features...

The output on the Power Magic box is a cigarette lighter receptacle so you could use a splitter. Just need to make sure the overall power draw doesn't exceed the unit's output.
