this will run from one of the usb ports on rear of headunit through center console and replace the 12v power outlet in the center console. very useful cable. also helpful if you think you'll ever return to stock before selling car and don't want to hack up the oem usb port.

i actually prefer the usb port to be in the center console location rather than the oem location so that i don't have a random usb cable getting in the way of my shifting and such.

for the folks planning to use idevices with aftermarket hu, you're all working toward getting a digital signal from ipod/phone to hu, right? using aux means the idevice does the digital to audio conversion rather than sending digital signal to the dac built into the head unit. guess it depends on whether the hu supports bypass of ipod/phone dac.

i just ordered it for the same purpose of routing it through the center console and replacing the 12v jack. Hopefully it fits properly :) If it does, i'll just order a blank button to fill the usb gap or something

This tutorial helped me a ton.
I bought 4 or 5 USB cables from the dollar store & hacked up 3 trying to get good at doing this.
In the end, I found that not all USB cables are the same, and after switching to another type, found it much easier to bend the pins up.
I also used the glue gun when making the connection, helped in securing it quite a bit.

I ran the USB cable from the back of my deck to the glove box, added a normal 4-port hub, then connected one of those ports back to cable leading to the stock USB location.

I did notice on the usb cable i have, the pins are slightly sunken in to the plastic. I was going to try sanding down the plastic a bit and bending them up and see if that helps any. Maybe i'll give that a try while i wait on that other part.

They make an aftermarket harness that plugs into the factory harness and the other end is a USB plug to plug into the back of the aftermarket radion.

That's perfect! What about the 3.5mm audio jack, does anyone make an adapter/connector for it? I just don't want to hack OEM parts/wiring. I did a little searching but haven't come up with anything, will look deeper when I get home.

does this go straight into the back of the factory usb plug and leave enough space for the aux pins? If that works, perfect. I already got the aux working with half an aux cable and half a servo cable. That part was easy enough

SVXdc on here makes an aux cable that plugs into the factory harness. For the USB adapter the USB end plugs into radio and the harness plugs into the factory harness located behind the radio.

Has anyone found a solution to retain the factory BT mic when installing an aftermarket radio?

The following was done on a tundra. I know ours has a microphone amp as well. has anyone here opened the mic up and is does it seem similar to the following?

For the Microphone:
I did a substantial amount of wiring, trouble shooting, building of power supplies, and legwork…to be beat by the OEM microphone amplifier. In the end I tried the simplest of things; I bypassed the Microphone amplifier and simply connected the factory microphone. This gave me a microphone that fit perfectly into the location and worked great. The OEM mic DOES NOT need the amplifier when used with the Eclipse head unit, and I can assume this is the same for all head units.

I tested with a parrot mic and the Eclipse mic, both held in numerous areas of the vehicle, and in ALL cases the Toyota OEM mic was the clearest.

To bypass the amplifier is easy, here it is:

Behind the factory radio, on the k7 connector, connect the following:
Toyota Brown wire = Tip + of a mono 1/8” headphone connector
Toyota Yellow = Ring – of the headphone connector

At the microphone in the headliner, Remove the mic and do the following:
1. Cut the four wires between the plug and where they enter the wire bundle.
2. Connect two pieces of wire to extend the Brown and Black wires, 3” works fine.
3. Mask off or heatshrink the extra wires.
4. Open the mic casing and expose where the mic connects to the amplifier.
5. Solder the new wires to the circuit board where the mic connects.
6. Connect Brown to the mic +, and Black to the mic -.
7. Re-assemble the mic and install in the vehicle.
8. Plug the mic into your head unit.
9. Enjoy the factory microphone!!!

I hope this helps others; it took a long time to gather all of the information. I will post other documents to support the wiring diagrams for the vehicle.

I'm curious why anyone would want to keep the factory USB port. It's in a terrible location that invites people to break in and steal it. With an aftermarket HU, just route the USB cable into the glove box so you can keep your electronics private. I alternate between an ipod and an external HD. I don't really want that sitting out in the open all the time.

It's functional, and makes for easy acces when guests are in the car or temporary use it charge something, etc. I agree it's a bad idea to keep devices sitting out in the open when the car isn't in use, but it's also dumb to have a perfectly useful USB port that doesn't do a damn thing. Many head units have two ports (like my 80-PRS), so the iPod is in the glove box, the other port will be wired to the factory location.

This is exactly why the OE usb location is just fine.

I put all my music on this. Boom.
