I do have some chirping sounds, only at idle though and I only hear it if I'm in my garage with windows down (or open the hood and try to listen where it's coming from). Give tiny bit of gas and it's not there. Not bothered atm.

its the direct injection, nothing to worry about

Boxers in general do not make any tapping noises. The tapping from your FA20 engine is 100% from the Direct injection injectors firing. As some have pointed out, the fuel pressure is very high and when they fire the injector, it uses 80V-ish to pull the injector open. This creates the noise you hear.

What I have found is that sometimes at idle, the DI injectors are not firing at all and its much quieter. Then sometimes is firing 100% of the time at idle. Probably a way that Subaru cleans out the engine, or tests out the cats, or a lean burn situation. Who knows for sure. This creates that noise that isn't always there. That isn't good for customers as its going to create a lot of calls to the dealer over nothing.

yeah a lot of us are just worried :D but folks DONT WORRY i remember my 2zz-ge celica, that was a noisy engine, sounded like it was about to rattle something loose at 8500 rpms but never did the gazillion times i took it there(was still worried every time XD lol )

Sorry for wind noise...Everything else is normal. That was a GBS Limited at idle, iPhone vid taken right above the driver's side fender where it meets the hood.

I've read that Subies are known for that tapping, but I haven't come across any tapping from the turbocharged variants.

I can confirm this is a Toyota DI system sound, Lexus IS makes this exact sound at idle

That chirping noise I can somewhat hear at very low revs (<2500) in first and second gear. Like if I'm in a parking lot and going <12 mph in either of those gears (which I wouldn't be in third of course), I'll hear that chirp as I give it the throttle.

I started noticed it right after the TRD air filter drop in so I thought maybe it wasn't properly secured or something. Double checked and everything seemed fine, must just be the timing and me noticing it with no music on for once.

(Also, this is on an FR-S, so it's definitely not just a BRZ thing for those curious!)

Does it sound kind of like cricket ??

I freaked out just like you when I heard the clicking under my Audi A3 2.0T's hood (graduation gift, parents put a refundable $500 deposit on a BRZ but changed their minds when they saw one in person, I nearly cried) and posted on an Audi forum. Guy said it was just the DI system. I took the car to the dealer anyway and they reaffirmed that it was nothing to worry about.

You're probably already reassured at this point with all these replies from people stating it's the DI, but I thought I'd give another +1 for the hell of it.

I have started noticing that cricket sound when the engine is idling. Any ideas?
Someone in a different thread said it might be the idler pulley making that high pitch cricket sound.
