The point is the salesperson is just someone who takes your money and provides a service or hands over a product... you're not buying a work of art from the artist or an art expert.

Also... the reason the average sales rep won't have a highly detailed knowledge of the car is because almost no one expects or requires it.

The point is that all the ranting about this is ultimately empty and silly.

Never mind...the internet thrives on empty and silly... how dare I challenge it :bonk:

Yeah.

Oh, hey -- you'd better start reading back issues of Initial D, otherwise you might lose a few customers :bellyroll:

Anyway... so what was the reaction of your Hassidic Jewish customer?

I refuse to acknowledge a Scion IQ until you can tell me its history, its purpose on the market, and why there is an Aston Martin version of it.

If you want someone that has an interest in the AE86, come talk to me. I won't sell you a car, but I know stuff.

I rang a dealership yesterday in the uk and the receptionist asked what the BRZ was :D
I had to explaine it to her as she didn't know anything

Salesman rang me back and was ok and we had a good laugh about it

I'm a sales manager and trained salesman for 30 years ,not motor trade though and have done mystery shops on car salesman and generally am very disappointed in their knowledge and enthusiasm
Grease you het higher up the ladder Porsche. Ferrari ,Bentley they are great and are enthuastuc but the lower ones Audi Merc and BMW have no more passion then a man selling a £10000 basic ford which is a shame as 30k is a lot of Money to a lot of people and can take years to save or pay off and people are as excited s someone getting a Ferrari ,Porsche
It would be nice for dealerships to have a sports car specialist like the Nissan garages have that sell GTR I met a man who was the ultimate petrol head ,who would go out and look at your car and talk about it as much as the one that he is trying to sell
That is the calibe of salesman that should be selling us the BRZ etc

Ultimately it's the dealer principles ,sales managers faults for not putting petrol heads into salesman jobs

The guy that sold me my last two subarus moved 250 miles away but still rang me last week begging me to drive down to see the new BRZ as it had just arrived at his dealership and was so excited telling me about modifications and extras they were developing for it as soon as it arrives

I will be travelling the distance to purchase from him

LeavingNormal 04-28-2012 05:38 AM

LordHarding I gotta say if all salesman were as great as that guy I would definitely travel to buy from them. Haven't quite found anyone knowledgable enough to sell me a car long distance, but it's a rarity I'm sure. I bet those rare cases can move cars with enthusiasm alone though. And good for them for having the passion.

I called what I thought was Regency Scion's phone number yesterday, but ended up transfered to Regency Toyota which is accross the street and within view. I was calling to ask when the demos would be in and when I said FR-S the guy asked if I was talking about a car that they made... I hope so... Scion FR-S... he repeats FR-S out loud... then someone in the background asks if I'm talking about an FJ:sigh: ... Now I'm getting a little frustrated and I ask him if there was anyone there who knew anything about Scions and the guy finally tells me "this is Regency Toyota, Regency Scion closed 10 minutes ago":mad0259:

I have a feeling if I rolled up in a 2000GT no one there would even bat a fucking eyelid... oh well I guess they're just pamphlet monkeys, but I wish dealership workers would take at least some interest in cars...

I totally get its a new car and they need to focus on promoting it as such.

However when I envisioned the promotional campaign i never expected the campaign to be so poor as to completly ignore the AE86(the proclaimed predecessor).

For some reason I thought they'd have a promotion like have the old car and the new one lined up side by side.

Every Scion Rep with the exception of 1 I've spoken to have no clue whats going on, when i mention the AE86(Corolla GTS) their reaction is either "Whats that" or "ohhhhh thats an old car".

Complete lack of knowledge of their own lineage.

Doesn't Scion HQ hand out a package and say "Hey read this so you know what enthusists are talking about"?

I get their in the business of selling cars and thats whats important, but it always irks me when the people selling the cars, have no clue about the cars, their own lineage or even the car their trying to sell me.

I know this isn't all dealerships(Theres a guy on here who seems very open from a dealership inquebec) but it certainly appears to be the majority.

it is very naive of you to say these things. I wonder what you asked him. Did you also compare the fuel consumption between two cars, the CoG difference, the fuel tank capacity, weight difference and distributions, gearing ratios?

News Flash: Just because something in pop culture is really, really important to you, it may not matter one bit to anyone else.

Most of the people who buy this car will have never heard of AE86's, read/watched any Initial D, care one bit about the great Corolla GT-S legacy, etc. etc.

Yes, there is a fan base, and they will relish the car and all it stands for, but somewhere around 90% of the folks who purchase the car will not care.

And you'd better hope that my prediction is true, otherwise Toyota/Subaru probably won't sell enough after the first year to keep the dream alive.

Snobbish rants over the dealerships not having enough background knowledge in the history of the cars they sell is just plain silly. All they need to know are some basics about the actual car they are selling (sounds like they have to know that according tho the Scion rep), assist you with figuring out payment options, and be reasonably polite (and even that doesn't really matter. I'll take a jerk salesman if I get the price I want).

+1.
