No not that light, you might be thinking CRX. Civics and Corollas were around 23-2400lbs 25 years ago. At least the one I had. Personally I'd cap all DD sedans and coupes at 2500lbs max. I think that's around the max weight to offer the best agility and response to deal with various unsafe scenarios one would encounter at typical driving speeds. People would enjoy driving more, be more involved and aware, get better mileage, etc.

Curb weight of a 1st-gen Honda Civic ('72-'79) was around 1,530 lbs and could get around 40 MPG with a 50 HP engine. Interestingly enough, due to the weakening of suspension components when exposed to salt, people started watching out for "typical Honda rust" when buying them used. Honda reliability came much later.
IIRC in the late 80's Civic's we around 2,100 lbs.
I don't know how you could make a luxury sedan or luxury coupe under 2,500 lbs. with all the safety requirements we have and still make them cheap. How would you propose we do such a thing?
