Regular gauges bring their own sensor that you plug into the motor and they read directly, not through OBDII

No, just than aftermarkets gauges are cheaper in cost because the manufacturers dont invest in as much time to implement CAN communication. But at the same time not every car has certain sensors preinstalled thats why they come with their own sensors or tap into other sources to get their readings.

ah ok, so this takes advantage of the OEM features while other gauges just essentially add 2nd redundant sensors. very interesting.

looking at this how can i tell what gauge im on at quick glance? like 1 sensor temp from another
