Nice! the rods look beefy for factory, def look 400whp capable. The off center connecting rods are something I've waited to see in production cars for a long time. Cracked caps too, instead of cut. The off-center rods are similar to what a lot of OEMs are moving too. Strange, its a design used in lawnmowers, as well as high end high hp applications. Interesting they would use this design. What do you guys think?

These rods have withstood over 500whp without failure. I wouldn't push it though. Just goes to show you. These rods are from a k20a2, 86x86mm construction as well.

Whoa what is the EJ257 rod length? The FA20 rods look to be not that much shorter!

5.135" on the EJ

It appears a subsequent underlying theme here for the FA20 is: More power, thicker oil, keeps crank happy.

Any oil engineers lurking around?

I like this thread. I know a lot about bolt-ons and some about FI (made myself learn when I bought an Evo) but just about nothing about engine internals aside from what the primary parts are.

Threads like this are going to be helpful in planning my modding route.

On a turbo FA20, 5w40 rotella will do just fine.

You sir are a wicked, wicked man. Do you have the deck height yet so I can start tossing numbers around? :)

btw, love this thread,

as coheed said, very courious as to what people think about the rods, when i first saw pictures of them i had horrid flash backs to mini cooper engines,,, then i thought about the exotics now using them too,

they make the rod bearings smaller to increase stroke and they strengthen the main bearings to make it stronger at higher horsepower and higher compression rate. yes it is heavier but all that means is you need more to spin it so it may not be the quickest at the light but when you get it moving the thicker counter weights will help it to move faster. This is why all the power is made at top RPM levels. This may also be why replacing the crank pulley an flywheel make such a big difference on this engine.

My opinion: I wouldn't be surprised if we are able to take this to +8k RPM's with out damaging the engine.

Yes i know i put "lagre" instead of "large" to lazy to fix lol

my brain explodes everytime i look at subie oil systems and there cranks,
forged light weight I beam rods and pistons with knife edged crank will be the order for NA, im looking for built 20valve revs,

do subies eat oil pumps at all? im not very clued up on boxer tech,

Subaru Oil pumps are pretty solid. They also move a LOT of oil. With 5w-30, oil pressures over 100psi are the norm on the EJ engines, especially 07+. The 07+ oil pumps are common upgrades.

I don't know what the FA engine is like, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's also over 100psi at full song.

Sorry... been away tinkering with motors and turbo kits for these cool rides!
