It makes no sense to have the twins use differing engine setups with different power. Either both will be turbo, or neither. If they use the FA24 and keep it turbo (my hope), I doubt it makes more power. They may tune it to rev more freely, but not much more. If they rip the turbo off, they have a bit more work to tune it to rev high and freely... at least 7000rpm. Sorry OP, but your rumours don’t pass the sniff test.

However, I'm visiting a family member who's worked at Toyota Corporate/headquarters for 35 years. Not sure if this information has been talked about, but he has informed me on the following regarding the second generation FR-S/BRZ

-He has seen early renders and said they look incredible
- The engine will be borrowed the current Subaru Ascent (2.4L, 4-cyclinder)
- however will be bumped up to 280hp (vs 260hp in the base Ascent)
-The BRZ Version will be the only one that will have an optional turbocharger. Unknown if Toyota will offer later

I'll try and get more info out of my family member. But thoughts? Has this info already been discovered or discussed?

Maybe you could use the fake vents on the sides I guess?

Why wouldn't tge FA24 fit?

Why wouldn't a FB16 DIT fit in a twin?

Why wouldn't a top mount fit?

Why is a front mount hard?

The AVO on my 86 looks typical to the FB16 design, apart from the AVO having a FMIC.

I've seen twins with aftermarket turbos running every conceivable setup, including a TMIC.

Unless I'm missing something?

The F turbo setups mounts the turbo in front of the oil pan, under the crank damper. They're QUITE a bit taller than the FA20, which went as far as squeezing the exhaust manifold MUCH closer to the engine than even an NA FB25 for the sake of mounting it lower.

It's not impossible, it's just against the design mission of this car.

What people seem to be forgetting is that just because many sources have speculated that the 2nd gen twin will be getting an FA24 that doesn't mean that it will be the engine out of the Ascent. Just like the FA20 in the twins currently is not the same FA20 found in other Subaru models. If it is a 2.4l at all it would likely only be similar in displacement.

Toyota & Subaru have many tricks in their toolbox and I would expect that the 2nd gen twin will be more powerful, agile and fun to drive than the current twins with a close to 50/50 weight bias.

I also believe that the next version will be priced slightly lower than the new Supra, figure $35k-$40k.

Honestly at this point though everything is speculation, as Subaru is certainly one of the tighter lipped companies out there, and Toyota too.

Just how much more powerful is the question, and what happens to price. If they go for a NA version of the FA24, as some rumours suggest, very unlikely to get more than 240HP, and probably much less (e.g. 220HP). Not a huge increase over 205HP, and not one that justifies much of a price increase.

It’s gonna need at least 280HP to justify that kind of pricing! Why would Toyota let the new 86 throw shade on the B48 Supra with 260HP and more weight? Seems highly unlikely.

The 86 has to fit into the vertical product stack, and that means it has to sit below the B48 Supra they will get in Japan and Europe. If that B48 variant didn’t exist, sure, a 260-280HP 86 would be more permissible. But not at present.

I hope it has 206hp so there's no question that I want to keep my current car :)

So you think that they will increase the price on their entry level sports car by 50-75%? You know that you are in STI territory there right?

Sorry don't see the point of these threads. There's a new one like every week. I won't get my hopes up. I'm more of a "won't believe it till I see it" kind of guy. However, I do trust Subaru/Toyota to make the right decisions for the next generation. They made a great car already and I'm sure after 7 years, they will make necessary improvements and keep the same formula that made the original one so great. If they make it with that much more power, the people who keep whining about it can upgrade and be happy and the people who don't need it can keep the one they have. I know it's hard not to try to look into the future and think about the next gen that's two years away, but I think we should just enjoy what we have now and just wait till the actual company makes an announcement.

Nice thread tag by the way lol

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who works in an ad agency that’s trying to generate clickbait, who say the new 86 is gonna be turbocharged _and_ supercharged, with a V8.

There will not be an 86 in 2021 model year.
